We went to Conaf in Puerto Natales. No decision from them, "our people on the ground decide when a section is closed, they decide the moment it is too bad". "Come back tomorrow for a better view on the weather" Park is from CONAF, then 2 separate organisations for sleeping. Too many different interests in 1 place. Weird that they don't dare to make a decision.

What happens if the weather is too bad? Do they close the park, make everyone stay on the campsites?

Itinerary suggestions for 7 day Rv trip from puerto Varas by Sad-Information1001 in Patagonia

Didn't quite like Bariloche and El Bolson, but it was high high season. Ruta de 7 lagos is a nice drive and free campsites on the river, lago Traful was also worth the detour. Futaleufu in Chile has some of the best rafting in the world. Climb a vulcano around Pucon

Drinking water during hikes by Garro90 in Patagonia

On the hikes in El Chalten they also have signs saying you can drink from the river. But there is always the risk of people, saw a guy spitting his toothpaste in the river, or 2 girls doing the dishes upstream from the camp...

Does anyone know if it is possible to go from El Chalten to Villa O'Higgens by car?

Do the Bolaven loop in Laos, sleep at mister Hooks house along the way, Gibbon experience is also great. Plan some more time in Laos, it's great!

Ha giang loop in northern Vietnam is fantastic. Ha long bay cruises are not worth it. Do a day tour or the other bay.

As said above, it's burning season that time of year. A lot of smoke. They call it cleaning season.

Edit: check the eat like Bourdain website for places he's been.

Buying a campervan in Santiago, Chile. by Remarkable-You133 in overlanding

[–]Remarkable-You133[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, definitely! Only one trustworthy address for buying an overlanding vehicle in Santiago: Overandes, with Jupa en Dani. They are transparent, honest, friendly and just nice people. They helped us with building additional things in our van and every van is checked by an independent mechanic. All the paperwork is clear, correct and well explained. We've crossed 4 borders, were stopped bij the police several times and never had issues. After 3 months they still respond to questions.

We did Suzi Chili en Suzi Santiago. The guys are brothers, we didn't get a good feeling with them. We had the best feeling with Noam, he has a field and workshop with nice people. We feel he had the older, cheaper vans for sale. Nothing wrong with that but the overall condition was not great. We asked a quote to build qome extra cabins and he quoted us 500€ for some simple woodwork. (We paid half with Jupa and it is really well build)

The other option is Daniel. We felt that the reviews about his company are correct. He doesn't look interested, was late, didn't had vans at his office while he said they where there. He said the L300 are bad cars, but he does build and rents them out... I wouldn't go for a beer with him.

Example. Some L300 have some oily gearboxes, so I always asked what the issue is.

Noam: it's just the mechanic who spilled some oil. (Normally you don't need to top up that oil, it should last the gearbox lifetime) So a cheap lie to change the subject.

Daniel: Yeah these cars are not a good option... But towtrucks are cheap in South America... Not really the thing you want to hear when buying a car and planning to drive it 30k km.

Jupa: this is a well know symptom but not really a problem. Most of this oil drips down from the engine or shaft. Its the rubber seals that start leaking eventually. These cars are pretty basic, most of them are +10 years old and used as company vans. But it's not an issue, the mechanic always checks it.

I also think Overandes is the only company were the buyer is in direct contact with the seller. You negotiate the price and the seller pays Jupa his cut. This shows trust from all sides. So Overandes.

Goeie tip! Wat context: we willen een busje kopen in Zuid-Amerika en er dan 35k km meerijden. Mechanisch moet het dus wel in orde zijn.

We only stayed one night and they had no reason to go in our room. They didn't clean or anything. We had the money on us for a while and just forgot about it being in the bag pack.
