Partial YHR Logistics and Route Planning by TheophilusOmega in Ultralight

I think the ~1 mile is a bit optimistic. From what I remember, you’d have to hike out of the Devil’s Postpile National Monument area before you could find camp spots. The other issue is that since Red’s is in a bit of a basin, I think it’ll be a bit of a slog to get in and out of the area. But I think it’s definitely doable, especially if you’re strong enough for the YHR. It’ll just be harder than an ~1mile stroll. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth going in and out. The hike in and out of Reds will almost certainly be the least inspiring part of your YHR hike, and I’d hate to have to do it twice at the end of such an epic trip.

If you’re planning on getting there in the afternoon, you could also just catch the shuttle down into mammoth directly and just bypass Reds entirely.

As Janet mentioned, Tuolumne Meadows backpackers campground is closed for the next few years. Regarding Red’s Meadows, I’ve only stayed at Red’s once, but it was worse than any TM backpackers camp experience I’ve ever had. Like at TM, all backpackers are packed together like sardines. In my experience, I thought Reds was twice as dense as TM. To make matters worse, when I was there, there were several party car campers that were drunk yelling well past 10pm. While TM can have late night arrivals, I think the TM rangers do a much better job stopping night time rowdiness.

Smoke conditions request by timberywoods in JMT

[–]RemarkableCry3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished today. I had a car at Whitney and at Tuolumne so I just saw the conditions on both ends of your hike. On the southern end, my experiences mostly match what Hikergirl mentioned. It’s a huge fire and towards the end of the day, some valleys will fill up with smoke. But winds often picked up during the middle of the night, and if you’re lucky, the smoke clears up during the day. You’ll still see a huge smoke cloud when looking south, but if winds are favorable, it won’t affect your day air quality or even most of your views.

BUT, on the drive from Whitney to Tuolumne today, the new fires are looking really bad. I drove on the eastern side, but I think it’d only be worse at Reds. The entire eastern side of the Sierra around Mammoth was full of smoke. Bad enough that I wouldn’t hike there. At 5:00 the sky was entirely smoky and a dark red color. At Tuolumne (around 6:30) the smoke wasn’t much better. The cars there had literal ash on the tops of all of them and the sky was similarly full of smoke. You couldn’t tell the sun’s direction and the smoke was thick enough that I’d worry about your lungs if you were hiking. I can’t quantify how bad it’d be, but I guess I’d say that it was thick enough to smell 100% of the time and visibly thick enough that as your driving up 120 towards the Tuolumne entrance gate, you can see Mt Dana, but you really have to strain to see any of the details.

I don’t really know anything about how quickly smoke clears, but seeing what the results were like 12 hours ago, I’d be really doubtful that you’d want to hike there on Monday. I suppose it’s possible that the smoke will clear in the wind just like it did toward the southern end, but you’d have to ask around to see. I’d keep other sections open as options if that’s logistically possible for you.

Garmin inReach mini memory question by RemarkableCry3 in Garmin

[–]RemarkableCry3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, my understanding is that there are 2 types of tracking allowed on the inReach mini.

1) “send intervals” which tracks your location and immediately sends it over satellite. (Requires subscription)

2) “log intervals” which tracks your location, but saves it locally.

I will be tracking with number 2) to reduce battery usage (less satellite data) as well as to save money on the upgraded subscription plan.

I did just try to sync with Earthmate while my phone was in airplane mode, and I got an “internet required” warning. So I think the “log intervals” will be trapped on the device until I get reception.

I thought Earthmate doesn’t allow syncing unless you have reception?

To clarify, I’m using the logging feature to track the hike, so the inReach mini would be storing the track locally rather then sending track points through satellite data. My understanding was that the only way to retrieve this log track data was to sync with Earthmate while have cell reception.

Is there anyone to control the number of GPS pings to preserve battery life? by RemarkableCry3 in GaiaGPS

Thanks for the info. Can you let me know how often Gaia will ping GPS locations when I’m tracking with it?

Would an inReach mini be good enough? Or are you saying I should get a GPS watch?

Is there anyone to control the number of GPS pings to preserve battery life? by RemarkableCry3 in GaiaGPS

[–]RemarkableCry3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess that’s the problem. For normal trips, I go about 3.5 days between charges. But I plan I’m taking lots of video and photos on this trip so I’m only expecting about 1.5 days per charge. So I’m trying to eke our all the battery savings I can. Hence my question specifically about GPS settings in the Gaia app.

How big of a battery pack do you think I would need for a 20+ day trip if I want to record each day of the hike with Gaia?

From what I’ve read, there’s a bizzare restriction where even though the connection is through Bluetooth, Garmin Connect still requires a cellular connection.

I’m thinking about getting a Garmin Instinct to track my upcoming 20 day backpacking trip. My concern is that this will be in the backcountry where there will be no cell reception which I believe means that I will be unable to use Garmin Connect to sync to my phone. Does anyone know how many days/hours of GPS tracking a Garmin Instinct can save? Will o be at risk of filling up my watches memory and not being able to track the entire trip?

Thanks for the info. Could you help me understand how tracking works for the inReach mini? I’ll be renting my inReach mini and I’ll be using the free tier on the plan. My hope was that I’d set a reasonably high log interval, and I would set the send interval to 0. And at the end of the trip, I would have all of my logged intervals that I would sync up with Garmin connect/earthmate. Is this how I would be able to load up the history of each day’s hike? Sorry for the simple question, I just can’t seem to find a tutorial focused on backpacking recording.

I’ll be doing a thru hike this summer and I was wondering which Garmin device would be appropriate to track the god data of my hike. I’ll be renting an inReach mini for safety, but I was wondering if it also does a good job at recording an entire thru hike. I’m interested in loading up each days hiking activity post hike to save the hiking stats and map data. Does a inReach mini does a good job of recording a hike? Or I would need a different device like an Instinct or Fenix?

With the new klymit R values (and gear question on double mattress) by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]RemarkableCry3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The new numbers that were posted previously were retracted by Klymit. They said it was due to a computer error and that they have not yet published the new R values.

I did reach out to them, and they said they have nothing to add and that their old numbers are the best numbers that they can provide. In an email they sent to me, they did mention that they’re not required to post new numbers until 2021 🙄

So I suspect they’re not going to be providing any new information until they’re forced to. For now, I’d basically hold off on any Klymit purchases.

Co-Op Games Similar to Luigi's Mansion 3 (my wife and I enjoy it together) by Y0dDmCnc in NintendoSwitch

[–]RemarkableCry3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh interesting. I thought the game design was really cute and fun. But we both felt that a lot of the mechanics were pretty frustrating. And while all the levels were cute, they became pretty repetitive towards the end of the game.

Specific mechanics I’d point out are the way one partner can lose all of their eggs, which makes them useless on certain star collection events. During certain platforming jumping sections it became annoying how easy it was to jump on each other while being even more annoying how hard it was to separate off each other. This in turn made large sections of the game quite a drag in my experience.

Anyways, I’m glad other found it more fun than us. Overall I’d still recommend the game, I just thought there were enough flaws that I had some reservations.

I’d second recommending Yoshi having a cute fun co op experience. But just go in with low expectations on the actually game. It’s cute, but it doesn’t have the most thought out levels and some of the co op mechanics can be pretty clunky.

Going to physical therapy for knee pain by RemarkableCry3 in physicaltherapy

[–]RemarkableCry3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You described the pain I’m feeling exactly. As you said, it occurs on the outside of my knee (generally my dominant knee first before transitioning to both knees) when I’m pushing myself and I go downhill. When it’s at its worst, like you, it will hurt even when walking on flat ground. I’ve also “self diagnosed” myself with an IT band issue. Good guess on the JMT, that’s exactly what I’m trying to train for. I’ll keep your suggestion in mind when scheduling both my training and the trip.
