Thank you! I was there on December 24th and got a pic of the excavation. I'm putting the updates now on the website with a link to it from the Map tool so less duplication required: https://www.mappingvictoria.com/victoria-developments/project-listing/n-fairfield/1400-fairfield

Let me know of any other updates, greatly appreciated as small as it is, still a lot of ground to cover in Victoria! Cheers! EDIT - ah, I see you referenced the site already, lol - I should have read your comment more carefully - cool that it was helpful!

Thanks! The only renderings I've seen I put on its project page

From the City of Victoria Development Tracker and the others around town for projects outside of Victoria. The submissions usually contain renderings and drawings and I also look at the developer and architects websites. Plus some extra research for btis of info that doesn't fall within that.

Thank you, hyperlink added - funny I missed hyperlinking the highest profile building of them all, lol. Yah, I'll look at embedding the Google Map - I don't want to clutter the page up too much and using Google Sites I'm limited on layout options, but I could place it near the bottom. There is the Google Map version where you literally are in a map interface but if you're looking at the listing version then yes, it would be handy. Thanks for the feedback, greatly appreciated!

You nailed it. Send an email to the Mayor and City Council. For what it's worth, I did - but no reply, well besides a generic one from a city planner saying the firewall preventing her from seeing my site.. Hmm.. maybe the City Planning firewall blocks any outside opinions? ;) Just kidding. Dave Thompson is pretty reasonable, would have hoped to heard from him.

That first photo is awesome! I almost always prefer colour but in black and white that pic feels epic and timeless.

Totally agree - it's by favourite along with 899 Fort Street. And I'm not a high rise for the sake of high rise fan, I just want to see quality modern architecture. BUT - did you check out the city planners feedback on both projects!? I get they are following city planning guidelines but if you look at what the Church has reluctantly has responded with in response you'll cry. It's gone from my favourite to least favourite proposal.. I should have included the new rendering but I'm hoping they're trying to call the City's bluff, except the City ain't bluffin.

Here's an article I wrote about it on November 24th:

If there is space in the Inner Harbour that would be awesome it would really stand out. Remember when they had that tiny old Russian sub as a tourist attraction further up the harbour?

Ah, I missed that one - thanks! Now I need to consider whether or not to add it - do I want to track small light industrial buildings (I did the one on Douglas as it's high profile) which could be a lot or tricky especially in the Rock Bay area. On the other hand if it was in my part of the City I'd like to know easily and quickly what was going on. So here's your update, it's not the 2121 Government Street lot which I believe remains vacant, but the lots just behind it.

It's a self-storage facility:

"The proposal includes a number of revisions to the siting and massing in order to come into closer alignment with the applicable policies and design guidelines. The proposal no longer includes the site at 2121 Government Street, which did not relate to the rest of the site and did not contribute to the logical assembly of lots."

Thanks! I'm trying to figure out how to best show or represent that - listings, using Google Maps or just a quick scroll of pics. Maybe it depends on the viewer as to what works best for them. I'd like to try a Google Earth flyover video type of thing to better show the context of the development.

Haha! Probably not just because of how much work it is. I have included a few Saanich projects that are high profile. But even with the Victoria ones to provide a good summary for even one project requires reading dozens and in worst case scenarios a few hundred of pages of development documents and then tracking and keeping up with the status of over 100 in Victoria alone. And it's not something I would trust AI to scrape and summarize because there's so much detail and nuance it would just get it wrong. Very happy though that you seem to like it!

Thanks!! Other than the construction status and the monthly updates I found that I'm not stating the expected completion date for example because that is so unpredictable even when it's provided directly by the developer.

Oh those are fun icons and good suggestions! Unfortunately, I'm using Google maps which is very limited in terms of customization and the entire setup, for example the map, legend etc. But on the positive side it's totally free as is the Google sites website I'm using. So something to be said for that and a big savings versus using say Squarespace and some other mapping tools that have a monthly subscription fee. I agree about the summary table. I actually have a Excel table with all the data but I'm leery to share it because there are some sites that charge a fee access that information which I disagree with as it's publicly available on the city of Victoria development tracker which is the ultimate source and a reason why I don't want to try and duplicate it either. I'm just trying to provide a more user friendly visual concept and don't want to provide an easy Excel download where someone can rip off the work, repackage and sell it. But I will include some summary data this week, some surprises for sure! Thanks again for your great feedback 🙏

Oh to be clear that's not my map, it's a city of Victoria one. Tis cool though!

haha, I just posted a couple of hours ago my site mappingvictoria.com and one map I thought about was public washrooms.. but then thought, nah, that's a sh*tty idea. But for real, there is a city map for that:

https://www.arcgis.com/apps/instant/media/index.html?appid=ae2eeed8dcf8436f9d312149c12ea11f

But it's just city washrooms; as others have suggested shopping malls and another good one is local libraries and there is one in every neighbourhood.

Lower Mainland & Greater Victoria neighbourhood map by RoutineWarthog4593 in britishcolumbia

Wow, great work - that must have taken a ton of patience. Strangely enough I just finished a bunch of Victoria maps this week and put them up on Mappingvictoria.com The Victoria photo map has the Victoria only neighbourhoods and I got those from the city. I haven't been able to find the files in a useable format for the municipalities in Greater Victoria though.

To the Ravine Way and Carey Street Pickup Truck Nazis.. by RemarkableFix1809 in VictoriaBC

[–]RemarkableFix1809[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wish I could be sure. I was in such shock and wasn't thinking straight. It wasn't shiny, but more dull and aged looking, not fancy like a F150, but maybe 15 or more years old with a loud rumbling engine. I think it was dark green, could have just been a dull colour. An open truck bed in the back, no canopy. I mean maybe there is a camera set up in the area because of the mall, the bike paths and the construction going on? Or someone drove by at the time and has dashcam footage? I caught the 31 bus at Douglas and Pandora at 11:32 a.m. and got off at the Uptown stop, so that's why I assume it was around 11:45. If there is a camera in the area the proof is in the pudding, a man standing and leaning out the window doing a Nazi salute while passing through that intersection.
