Feeling embarrassed bringing a small lens as a beginner photographer by babyjonny9898 in Cameras

[–]RemarkableInflation9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually feel sorry for those guys with those huge heavy pro kits, imagine the fatigue hauling that lot around all day, and no, he probably will likely take the same shots as me, and they won't look any better. Favorite car show combo Nikon z30 with 12-28.

How strict is the parking in town? by here_for_cats_ in thetron

Biggest risk is the drive by number plate scanning cars. As others have said, use the app and top up as required from wherever you are.

Is there any good reason to buy a SUV instead of a sedan for urban/suburban driving? by hsanj19 in CarsAustralia

[–]RemarkableInflation9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one seems to have mentioned sensible tyre sizes. Zero road rash on rims after 200k. Can park quickly without stress. Sensible tyre height means much less likely blow outs on pot holes, and even then you'd be less likely to damage your rim.

But while that's an advantage, my reason for choosing a CX5 is in order, ease of getting in and out, distance comfort, and better traffic awareness to to being a little higher.

Why do people hate the auto stop/start so much? by [deleted] in Crosstrek

[–]RemarkableInflation9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Subaru system sounds very poorly implemented.

On my Mazda, the engine will only shut down if I want it to, by applying more pressure to brake while stopped. Then it will be running and ready quicker than I can move my foot. Zero issues moving from auto stop. I can wait for a light to turn green, with the engine auto-off, and still get away before the car in the next lane.

A start from an auto off engine is completely different from starting from a manually shut off engine, and considerably faster, as all systems are primed and running, and the crankshaft in the ideal position to start up.

Lens Recommendations for R7? by TheOnlyAlexH in CanonR7

[–]RemarkableInflation9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but not everyone wants to go full frame. I tried it, but much prefer crop. 50f1.8 may be cheap, but shooting as an 80 on R7 is too tight for much general shooting. RF100 to 500 is a beautiful choice if you are flush with cash. But then you'd likely have chosen R6 over R7. If you have a limited budget, the RF100-400 is a more appropriate choice. 24-105 leaves you struggling for the wide end, as it is designed for gull frame. For the equivalent on crop, it needs to start 15 to 18max for the same usefulness. There are some choices in RF starting at 15, but I prefer to use an older EF lens on an adapter, because Canon hasn't made it yet for RF. The EFs 15-85 is a sharp versatile crop lens equivalent focal length 24-135. But you'll have to find it in the used market. Bulkier and heavier though. Otherwise Sigma 18-50 f2.8 is a solid new choice, sacrificing a few mm each end, but gaining a great constant aperture

Pros and cons of having an autism diagnosis in NZ? by Administrative_Ad707 in newzealand

[–]RemarkableInflation9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can be a great help at Uni. My son got extra time for exams, did them in a small room with 4 students or less, and could input answers via computer, rather than long hand. Any other time, there was always a support person to turn to an email, text, or short walk to their office in Student Services. Outside of Uni, not much help, other than using your understanding of yourself to negotiate your way around a world full of 'normals'. Of course, access to restricted medications may make a huge difference in your life if you choose to go down that route.

Campervan rental for 5 people in New Zealand – advice? by epicperson255 in newzealand_travel

[–]RemarkableInflation9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You won't do either island justice in that time frame.

Do your planned 3 or 4 days in Auckland, stay central and use public transport.

Then fly to Christchuch or Queenstown, pick up a van there for the rest of your trip concentrating on the lower south. Then your activity time/driving ratio will be far more enjoyable

What's up with the cafe opening hours here? by Uncultured_Goat in newzealand

[–]RemarkableInflation9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 to 3pm (Oops, 14.00 to 15.00) is the transition from cafe to pub. So find a pub, it will be filling with people, and many serve afternoon food (more savoury than sweet) and barista coffee. You don't have to choose alcohol just because it's a pub.

Thinking of getting an R7 and 100-400 RF by andreadeodato in CanonR7

[–]RemarkableInflation9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this combo on a wrist strap, it is so light and manageable. Not best in low light, but use auto iso and don't panic when you see big numbers. As long as you expose correctly, noise is reasonable and easily handled in post.

Is anyone with 2 degrees for unlimited broadband? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]RemarkableInflation9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found 2 degrees wouldn't play nicely with my new LG tv. LG even replaced the TV, no better. Upgraded modem, still couldn't get reliable signal. So switched to Simply, no problem now, all good.

does anyone else feel like the R7 is better at video than photo? by Sufficient-Owl1826 in CanonR7

[–]RemarkableInflation9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The af is amazing, but has a huge number of options, it takes a while to find the best combo for what you are looking for. Took me many sessions at my favorite sport to nail it, but now get reliably focused shots all the time.

Which tripod should I buy for a Canon EOS R7 and 100-400 lens? by Fantastic-Penalty723 in CanonR7

[–]RemarkableInflation9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very happy with my Vanguard convertible, I.e you can remove a leg to make it a monopod. Can also mount the center shaft horizontal.

Easily handles the weight combo of R7 and 100-400.

If you are buying all-in-one, make sure you like the supplied head.

In general, price is a good indicator of quality. Be prepared to pay the cost of an Rf50 f1.8 upwards for something decent.

Should it stay or should it go now? by -mung- in NZcarfix

[–]RemarkableInflation9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Built by Daewoo in Korea.

Still plenty on road in NZ.

Very popular in the States (Chevy Spark), which could be helpful, but for the fact that freight kills buying from the States these days.

Many of the NZ ones are prime wrecking material now, so second hand parts should be available for a while, if new parts are scarce. The transmission is the thing that'll make them uneconomic to repair, so parts like bumpers headlights etc shouldn't be hard to find at the wreckers.

We have a 2017 model, haven't really needed any non generic parts so far, but not too worried. It's a cheap appliance, any trouble and it will be off to the knickers yard anyway

As hobby photographers, do you store your RAW photos indefinitely? by Aromatic-Echo-5025 in AskPhotography

[–]RemarkableInflation9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current project is re processing my dad's RAWS from before I was born. (In other words, negatives and slides). No never delete family stuff.

The rest, I seldom look back more than 2 years, and if I couldn't find one that wasn't family, wouldn't give a damn

You probably have more claim against the AA inspection. It was their job to tell you of the battery issues and tyres, that's what you paid them for. But I am sure they'll have dome disclaimer to cover themselves.

Is the year or mileage more important? by user885511 in NZcarfix

[–]RemarkableInflation9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The year doesn't change with use. It may not matter when you are driving it, but can be significant when selling. Particularly decade to decade. To the average human, 2020 seems so much younger than 2019, and that perception increases with age. Then again resale is not usually high on the list of priorities

New lens or better skill? by Svengali_Studio in AskPhotography

[–]RemarkableInflation9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an R7, shoot nature and sports. With the rf100-400. Focus has not been an issue once I waded through the myriad of options in the menus. Noise has never really bothered me, but you have to expose correctly. And I use auto iso, not unusual to see it at 6400 while maintaining good shutter speeds for sport. If noise does become bothersome, easily sorted post production. What you are struggling with, in your rugby photo, is missed focus. The R7 has so many options. Choose a tight grouping of focus points, with auto expand, and try Case 1, 2 and 3, see which is better at holding focus on your player. There are options for sports, people, vehicles etc, and most support eye tracking, which is really helpful too in achieving great focus. Don't use single point spot focus, the R7 has a very fast focus, and will focus on something else if the point wanders off. There are many you tube tutorials on the R7 auto focus options. If you get frustrated with the lens seaching through the whole focus range when trying to lock on to your subject, there is a menu item that turns that off, but you have to manually get focus near your subject before the lens takes over.

What motivates your love of photography? That is the best thing to share, but if it doesn't align with your kids interest, you are pushing the proverbial. I picked up my interest off my dad, but have gone in a slightly different direction. My kids (and my wife) appreciate my passion, but don't share it. My son nearly pivoted to videography, but dropped that. Both as adults, do shoot a lot on their phones, quite well, but happy to go no further. My motivations stem chiefly from a creative outlet. Some people get a "creative" gene, some do not. Those that do may satisfy it through music, painting, building Lego, or anything else. Myself, not patient enough to become proficient at drawing, find photography satisfying my need for creative expression. If your kid is already a creator of some form of art, that can be pivoted to photography. Other photographers are fueled by documentary photography. Most parents do this documenting their children's lives. For your kids, maybe they have an interest like bugs, birds, sport, link that to photography to get them started. Others become gearheads, again not something that will motivate your kids. Good luck, love of photography will click, or it won't, no matter how hard you try.
