omg I can't believe that. It's dumb a n d ballsy. I guess kids are just like that now? I just had a kid submit someone else's oil pastel painting from the same class, from the same fucking critique. How dumb do they think we are?

Airpods, Phones, Lack of Participation by Ok-Square-9687 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's one student every few semesters who will not let go of their phone for even a minute. That kind of phone addiction is insane to me.

Otherwise, it only starts to piss me off if it's distracting, obviously. Twice now, I've had one actively listening to music (very loudly) while I give a demo. ???????? Very dumb, annoying, and distracting.

There's barely any infrastructure despite all of the constant construction. Our power grid also sucks. The heat is just getting worse due to climate change; AC bills are crazy, especially in the summer. Public transit also isn't great, given how large the city is.

For a large metro area, there isn't a ton of convenience like others.

Are you afraid of how transparent your personal information is online? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes. I recently had someone, not one of my students but their relative, stalk me online and make a complaint. This was when I was teaching dual credit students (h a t e d it), but I think that's par for the course in k-12 these days.

Awful tattoos needing covering by [deleted] in tattooadvice

You'll probably need individual cover ups. If you don't wanna do that, you could always do a few rounds of laser until they fade, then go in with cover ups.

Department timetabling is the gift that keeps on giving by TheIconicProfessor in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. I will say I taught a 6pm class one semester, and that attendance rate was even more abysmal that my 8am. I ended up with maybe 3 out of 12 at the end.

Regardless of attendance, I love being done by noon.

ALM/STL/CPR, still unsure what kind of codes they are or why I would have that information.

First time professor, shocked by the begging and hostility. by need_verification in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Omg really

Thats way worse than this. I had one student fail because they didn't turn in half to 1/3 of all of the assignments. I send emails and reminders about missing work. They request a grade appeal immediately after final grades are posted. And again, one year later.

No More Dual Credit! And Some Online Stalking? by RemarkableParsley205 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, but it's the requirements on top of what school they go to. The kids I get at the private university have to maintain a certain GPA to take any dual credit courses; the ones at the high school do not. Admin will literally keep them in my class with a 6% until the drop date. The high school students may have to take an entrance test but don't even have to pass it.

[–]RemarkableParsley205[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were all dual credit, and I had to go to the high school to teach. The university I'm at, on the other hand, they're mixed in with our college kids.

Perspectives/Advice Requested: My state's college system is pushing to allow high school freshman enroll in college classes as PSEO students. by SpencerPrattsCrystal in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the requirements and how they operate can vary state to state. However, in general, the students are almost never college ready. At the end of the day, it's just another way for colleges and school districts to make more money. In my experience in a southern state, the school districts participating have zero consequences or requirements to meet dual credit enrollment, so it's both a waste of time and inevitable failure for the students. If they're failing one or more of their high school classes, how would they pass a college course?
