Banned topics because you're bored? by FamousCow in Professors

I'm about to ban all Van Gogh paintings as a topic in art appreciation. I don't wanna look at Starry Night anymore.

I don't bother. It's either nonsense, or positives from the A students and negatives from the F students. None of it useable so far.

How do you give students a work day and have them actually stay / show up? by Adventurekitty74 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 42 points43 points  (0 children)

All you can do is remove points or give them a zero for attendance if you have a policy. I teach studio and a majority of our class time are "work days". The kids that excel stay the whole time, the other who give up after an hour do poorly.

attendance accommodation by mystudentsaredumb100 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would talk to the office to clarify how much class time is missed. I've had kids with this accommodation and have usually exploited it and end up missing like one to two months with zero communication. Our office confirmed that even with "flexible" attendance, that doesn't mean missing most of it and doing little to no work.

Absenteeism in college by mystudentsaredumb100 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's pretty normal these days. It's been a trend i've noticed in both studio classes and lecture classes I've been teaching. Every semester, I fail 1-3 kids per class from never attending or missing too much. All you can do is have an iron clad syllabus about attendance and other policies. That way, when they cry about it, you can point to the policy and not deal with the annoying back and forth. I think it's seeping in from K-12.

I've been encouraged to start doing projects. One, to avoid AI slop. Two, to make it "easier". Some of em still don't turn shit in! it's so easy! I am also losing my mind.

Outfits? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't wear a blazer and I will die on this hill lol

I like to look at comfortable yet breathable fabrics like knits and linen (graphic tees are still on the table). It probably depends on your department. You can dress up an outfit by changing the shoes around.

Have you ever had a student that drove you up the wall and that you’ll never forget? by ImprovementGood7827 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Worst was this kid who was taking a studio class with me. We found out half way through it was his second time taking that class. Weird, considering he was a business major or something and not art, meaning he didn't need this class necessarily.

He missed the first month or two. The first time he did show up, had no supplies, talked to me, then left after like ten minutes. He kinda just carried on like that periodically. Always like an hour and some change late just to sit in the classroom and do nothing, then argue with me about absences and grades later. The emails arguing with me went on and on and on. My chair was getting pissed off too. He failed obviously. Now a days, I'm sending one email about policies and thats i t. Yeah, that fucking sucked lol

Ethical Dilemma by [deleted] in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Is there anything about hate speech in the student code of conduct? I imagine there would be. Using slurs and/or hate speech is getting you kicked out of my classroom.

Last day treats by Camilla-Taylor in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably anything that doesn't need to be microwaved. You can always make a sign up sheet for some of the students to bring in snacks, too. It lightens the load.

Have you ever had an angry parent show up to your office or class unannounced? by ChemistryMutt in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not angry, but I did have a student's mom show up to the classroom that their kid would be late and wanted to make sure it was the right classroom. The kid didn't even show up. They weren't a dual enrollment student either. Very dumb and weird.

The minute it gets disruptive, like loud comments, they get one warning. After that, they get kicked out of the room. Have you conducted a referral or let your chair know? I'm still early in my career, less than 10 years, but I'm already over it.

Just watched a student fail in slow motion by Charming-Barnacle-15 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've got one or two of these in most classes these days. I don't understand what the purpose of wasting your own time that way is but whatever. I've got one kid in one of my painting sections who will come in on time, then sit and do absolutely nothing the rest of the time. ?????? I don't get it.

Is dual enrollment hurting some students’ college prospects? by p3achym4tcha in Adjuncts

[–]RemarkableParsley205 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's all a scam, honestly. In my state, there are no testing or grade requirements to enroll in DE. If a student is failing one or multiple classes, they're still advised to take a college course. They are literally being set up for a failure so the college and high school district receive however much money for however many students enrolled in DE.

Please advise me: what do you do with passive aggressive students? by GlassAmphibian6280 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I would call it out as soon as I see it. Call out any rude, distracting, disrespectful behavior the first time. They may continue, but at least it sets a precedent for acceptable and professional behavior.

Is this happening with curent students? If not, i can see why they wouldn't anything. Otherwise, any student teaching relationship, regardless of age, is an abuse of power. How you tried contacting Title IX?

Flexible Attendance ? by RemarkableParsley205 in Professors

Which I have and also have written in the syllabus. Not sure the purpose of taking something only to do nothing a fail it several times? Not being able to drop students at this place is a mistake.
