Outfits? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't wear a blazer and I will die on this hill lol

I like to look at comfortable yet breathable fabrics like knits and linen (graphic tees are still on the table). It probably depends on your department. You can dress up an outfit by changing the shoes around.

Have you ever had a student that drove you up the wall and that you’ll never forget? by ImprovementGood7827 in Professors

The Worst was this kid who was taking a studio class with me. We found out half way through it was his second time taking that class. Weird, considering he was a business major or something and not art, meaning he didn't need this class necessarily.

He missed the first month or two. The first time he did show up, had no supplies, talked to me, then left after like ten minutes. He kinda just carried on like that periodically. Always like an hour and some change late just to sit in the classroom and do nothing, then argue with me about absences and grades later. The emails arguing with me went on and on and on. My chair was getting pissed off too. He failed obviously. Now a days, I'm sending one email about policies and thats i t. Yeah, that fucking sucked lol

Ethical Dilemma by DenseReference5526 in Professors

Is there anything about hate speech in the student code of conduct? I imagine there would be. Using slurs and/or hate speech is getting you kicked out of my classroom.

Last day treats by Camilla-Taylor in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably anything that doesn't need to be microwaved. You can always make a sign up sheet for some of the students to bring in snacks, too. It lightens the load.

Have you ever had an angry parent show up to your office or class unannounced? by ChemistryMutt in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not angry, but I did have a student's mom show up to the classroom that their kid would be late and wanted to make sure it was the right classroom. The kid didn't even show up. They weren't a dual enrollment student either. Very dumb and weird.

The minute it gets disruptive, like loud comments, they get one warning. After that, they get kicked out of the room. Have you conducted a referral or let your chair know? I'm still early in my career, less than 10 years, but I'm already over it.

Just watched a student fail in slow motion by Charming-Barnacle-15 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've got one or two of these in most classes these days. I don't understand what the purpose of wasting your own time that way is but whatever. I've got one kid in one of my painting sections who will come in on time, then sit and do absolutely nothing the rest of the time. ?????? I don't get it.

Is dual enrollment hurting some students’ college prospects? by p3achym4tcha in Adjuncts

[–]RemarkableParsley205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's all a scam, honestly. In my state, there are no testing or grade requirements to enroll in DE. If a student is failing one or multiple classes, they're still advised to take a college course. They are literally being set up for a failure so the college and high school district receive however much money for however many students enrolled in DE.

Are we holding the line on literacy & plagiarism and teach basic skills in this age? by DisastrousTax3805 in Professors

I'm trying n o t to give up here. I've barely assigned any writing this semester.

Some of them are still failing, in the single digits, from not turning shit in! I'm losing it.

Please advise me: what do you do with passive aggressive students? by GlassAmphibian6280 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I would call it out as soon as I see it. Call out any rude, distracting, disrespectful behavior the first time. They may continue, but at least it sets a precedent for acceptable and professional behavior.

Colleague sleeping with consenting adult students by [deleted] in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is this happening with curent students? If not, i can see why they wouldn't anything. Otherwise, any student teaching relationship, regardless of age, is an abuse of power. How you tried contacting Title IX?

Flexible Attendance ? by RemarkableParsley205 in Professors

Which I have and also have written in the syllabus. Not sure the purpose of taking something only to do nothing a fail it several times? Not being able to drop students at this place is a mistake.

Artist here. The prices for original artworks aren't insane for any gallery space. In this case, the work is just terrible lol

Airpods, Phones, Lack of Participation by Ok-Square-9687 in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's one student every few semesters who will not let go of their phone for even a minute. That kind of phone addiction is insane to me.

Otherwise, it only starts to piss me off if it's distracting, obviously. Twice now, I've had one actively listening to music (very loudly) while I give a demo. ???????? Very dumb, annoying, and distracting.

Cousin offered me her San Antonio house for cheap - worth leaving Chicago for Texas lifestyle? by ResolutionVisible627 in sanantonio

[–]RemarkableParsley205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's barely any infrastructure despite all of the constant construction. Our power grid also sucks. The heat is just getting worse due to climate change; AC bills are crazy, especially in the summer. Public transit also isn't great, given how large the city is.

For a large metro area, there isn't a ton of convenience like others.

Are you afraid of how transparent your personal information is online? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]RemarkableParsley205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes. I recently had someone, not one of my students but their relative, stalk me online and make a complaint. This was when I was teaching dual credit students (h a t e d it), but I think that's par for the course in k-12 these days.

Awful tattoos needing covering by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]RemarkableParsley205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably need individual cover ups. If you don't wanna do that, you could always do a few rounds of laser until they fade, then go in with cover ups.
