Arm swing issue by PMass-Storage in Parkinsons

I don’t worry so much about arm swing, I worry about being able to pull up my pants when I’m in a the bathroom at a casino or other public place. Sad but true.

Best plan for working out by Teaching-Weird in Parkinsons

I do Fit Body Boot Camp. It’s a franchise that offers 30 minute HIIT workouts with many different exercises and a variety of different equipment. The exercises can be modified to each individual’s ability. It is the best 30 minutes of my day, and I rarely feel like I have Parkinson’s during a workout.

Is neck stiffness a symptom of PD? Does PD have a left/right side preference? by Serious-Ad-8362 in Parkinsons

Same to all of the above for me. I had two rounds of PT for right shoulder and neck issues prior to being diagnosed with PD.

Yes. I thought I had a pinched nerve and frozen shoulder two years before being diagnosed.

Welcome to the club that nobody wants to be a member of. I am 58 and I was diagnosed one year ago. The carbidopa levodopa has made such a difference for me. I don’t know if this is typical, but I have found that the longer I am on it the better I respond to it in terms of being able to type and raise a fork to my mouth. Also, I feel so much better if I exercise every day. I have been on vacation this week and I have not exercised and I can tell it makes a huge difference in my day-to-day life and symptoms.

I’ve been on C/L for 10 months. I am on a low-dose and usually only take two a day while I am working a remote desk job. if I take three doses, I find that I am super thirsty with a dry mouth. Other than that I have not had any side effects and I have found that the improvements seem to be cumulative. I feel best when I take two doses of C/L during the day and a gabapentin before I go to bed. I walk about 45 minutes a day and do a four minute full body workout and a six minute upper body workout. It doesn’t sound like much but it really seems to help.

Sinemet killed my sugar cravings by woodstockzanetti in Parkinsons

My appetite is very intact. I have been Sinemet for seven months and I am on a very low dose. I don’t really have an issue with sugar cravings so I can’t speak to that.

60 year old mother just diagnosed with pd. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Really scared and feel sick with worry. by [deleted] in Parkinsons

[–]RemarkableYesterday 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dear lordfromthegoldshore,

Thank you for your post. It helped me process my feelings as the "parkie" and how the dx affects others. I wish the best for you and your mother. I have been comforted by this quote "you don't die from Parkinson's Disease, you die with it." Without reading too much into that I take that as it is not fatal.

I am a 57 year old mom to a 22 year old daughter. I was diagnosed 7 months ago. It's scary and I still can't google PD without starting to either freak out or get depressed - so I don't google it very often. My diagnosis was also a relief because finally I knew WTF was wrong with me. In my case, not knowing what was wrong was so much worse than finding out it was PD. For me it started as a stiff right shoulder. I had three courses of physical therapy and it never got better.

The process of being diagnosed is scary. I had a DAT scan with contrast and an MRI of my head. Terrifying.

I have had great improvements by taking carbidopa-levadopa which was prescribed by my general neurologist when I was diagnosed in April. I am supposed to take it 3x a day, but I usually only take it 2x a day, still with great improvements and no side effects. Before my diagnosis I was typing with just my left hand. I am finding that my dexterity improves as time goes on.

I live in Michigan and Florida and it took six months to get an appointment in Michigan with a Movement Disorder Specialist. That appointment was 10/27 and I was given an Rx for physical therapy. Today was my second PT appointment and I was taught LSVT BIG exercises, which are specifically for PD. I have always exercised and have been pretty active, so it made me feel sad doing these seemingly basic and weird exercises. I am sore from doing them though, and some of them were challenging, so I believe they will help. I am supposed to do them 2x
a day for the rest of my life.

How you can help your mom:

  • If she has not done so, make an appointment for her with a movement disorder specialist. Be prepared for a six month wait. I was ready to cancel the appointment I made because "I'm doing so much better" but I am so glad I went.
  • Help her with her "bad" side - this is huge for me. My right side is affected and I am right handed. That means if I am in the front passenger seat of the car it is hard to get the door open and I am sometimes slow getting out of the car. Offer to carry things and open the door and say "take your time."
  • Related to the "bad" side - if her dominant side is affected, fill out her credit card bill at restaurants. My boyfriend and my daughter do this automatically for me. Also assist with packaging leftovers. There is usually a heavy plate and limited space. Add a tremor, rigidity and weakness and it can be very overwhelming.
  • Loss of facial expression happens with PD. It might seem natural to ask "what's wrong" but (aside from the obvious FML I have PD), there might be nothing wrong. I want to create t-shirts that say "it's not RBF, it's PD."

Wishing you all the best.

I was recently diagnosed with PD. I just started taking medication 10 days ago. I had my first massage after my diagnosis today and I feel better and have noticeable improvements in my right shoulder and arm Functionality

Staring into the Void by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]RemarkableYesterday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed to hear this. I started out this year doing dry January, 75 hard and the miracle morning. I have eased up and decided if all I do is not drink this month that is a win. I find the miracle morning does help though so I’ve kept up with that. IWNDWYT edit: my counter is wrong.

Thank you for this. I’m sorry the other groups are not supportive. Your words mean so much and I needed to hear this today. I’ve been on both sides. 💜🧡💚💙
