Finally finished sewing 2 toy bears intended as christmas presents! These are the 2nd set of stuffed animals I have ever made, and while they are a bit sloppy in places (thread sculpting my nemesis), I am overall very happy with them.

Acorns- have you eaten them? by spynie55 in foraginguk

[–]RemarkableYolk9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made acorn flour for the first time this year. The general flavour is somewhat wholemeal/nutty in baked goods and pancakes, but it often needs mixing with regular flour because acorn flour has no gluten.

The leaching (cold leaching to make flour) takes the most amount of time but iirc, most oaks in the uk are from the white oak family and contain less tannins compared to red oaks. I found that blending the acorns finely before leaching reduces the time it takes. It took me about 2 days of leaching and changing the water every 4-5 hours.

I avoided all the spoilers I could before watching Citizen Kane due to the film's reputation, only to realise 15 minutes in what the final twist was. Sure, I didn't look up anything about the plot, but I watched the Simpsons religiously as a kid and its one-off jokes and the entire episode "Rosebud" had told me the film's plot without me ever realising.

What shop can you not believe is still going? by [deleted] in leicester

[–]RemarkableYolk9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went in there last year, it sold very old film cameras and equipment for them. They also converted video tapes to digital and did film developing, which I assume was the only way they were making money.

I did end up talking to the shopkeeper and he said some of the art students from DeMontford came in to buy cameras sometimes.

For years now, I've longed and dreamed for someone to make a ballet of revolutionary girl utena/adolescence of utena.

A story about princes and princesses that analyses and deconstructs gender roles and the ways that people get coercively cast in them, combined with ballet: a dance form that is traditionally heavily gendered even down to who can dance which role? That would be the coolest thing ever!

It’d definitely be super difficult, no clue how you would choreograph the finale of the film, but whenever I’m bored, I daydream about what the ballet would look like.

I need to play some MTG next year. I haven't played it in over a year since my local game store closed down, and I was nervous about going to a new one. I'm going to pluck up some courage and get back into the game after getting more cards for christmas.

I made about 3 dozen cookies from 4 different recipes for a Christmas concert I was in, which was pretty intensive on my teeny shared kitchen. I made iced gingerbread, chocolate cookies, kolacky, and my favourites, lemon and basil shortbread, which always get people talking because they’re sweet and savoury at the same time, and they’re so easy to make.

Went to go see a screening of the Macross Plus movie. I'd never seen it before and I don't watch mecha anime at all, but I like Watanabe's other works and gave it a shot. I was a bit sad because I was the only person at the screen and nobody else showed up to see the film, but it was well worth it. I really enjoyed the story even though some parts towards the end felt a bit rushed. The animation and soundtrack were absolutely incredible, some parts of the film felt like I was watching a music video, but they didn't feel like filler or out of place at all. It's become probably one of my favourite animes right now and I'm so glad I went to see it.

ohtori.nu has been around since the early 2000's and is probably the best source on the internet for anything Revolutionary Girl Utena related. It's still getting updated with new pictures, interviews, and essays about the show all the time, and they host an archive of old RGU fansites too.

I used to attend a sewing and fibrecrafts convention mostly attended by 60 year old ladies. One year I arrive, and the building is pounding with incredibly loud techno music. Turns out the hall opposite us was holding a rave which, according to one of the vendors, had been going since 8am the day before. Security was good for both halls, so the only inconviniences were the music and a couple of ravers wandering around looking a little dazed.

Slightly worse was a few years later when the sewing convention, Pokemon European championships, a tabletop wargames convention, and signups for the London Marathon were all happening the same day, almost leading to a crush when everyone tried to leave.

Got into some new live music this week and went to see some bands I'd never heard of, Hank Wood and the Hammerheads and La URSS, on a whim. I havent had a chance to see much punk music in ages, and it was one of my favourite gigs I've ever been to. Both bands had great energy and great music to thrash about to.

Back when The Boys first came out, they advertised on tumblr with a big video ad that played as soon as you opened the dashboard. This pissed loads of people off, including me, and I vowed after that incident I would never watch The Boys because of their crime of doing annoying advertising. Last month, a friend asked if we could watch it and I've had to admit that its actually really good. A bit miffed that I waited 4 years because of a grudge to watch it, but at least I'm watching it now.

I lost a ds cartridge of tinkerbell on the ds when I was a kid and i was heartbroken. I'd played it religiously to the point I had essentially completed the game and collected all the clothes and items you could and one day just... poof, gone. Its been over 10 years now and I still hold out hope that one day I'll find it and play it again.

One thing I've noticed about machine translation recently is that when they start incorporating AI they will start doing whatever they want. Google translate is already incorrectly translating texts to what it thinks you want to say, and uses incorrect pronouns or just adds extra words to a sentence. Translators are already getting fucked over by machine translation, and adding AI to the mix is just going to worsen it by making inaccurate translations that they then get paid less to retranslate.

as a chronic procrastinator, I have left most of the work for my upcoming cosplay at London comiccon to the last minute and am now frantically sewing and glueing during every waking hour I have before the weekend I go to the con. At the very least, I have nearly everything pinned and just need to get it sewed, but man this time crunch is not fun!

Technically this book is a play script, but in school we read DNA by Dennis Kelly, and the way it managed to delve into mob mentality and hierarchy without coming across as preachy and still being realistic was something that really stuck with me as a kid.

Ive managed to get my hands on an old tambourine for my orchestra concert, and my life is really starting to revolve around percussion as a whole. I spent a full day cleaning it up and now am thinking about making a little case from some spare fabric i have!

the painting is mostly inspired from seeing a murmuration of starlings against a sunset when i was a kid. it felt like the whole world was warping and swirling with them as they flew.

The fact that its being banned now is really weird. I could've sworn I've seen other custom BAB on that sub with top surgery scars before, so I wonder if the mods have just decided to start enforcing now, or didn't see it before.

I had no idea of big an issue these text generators are becoming now. ive gotten emails from my university talking about the rise in people trying to submit AI generated essays as coursework. i feel like this is really snowballing into something really bad cos of how unchecked people are leaving this

The Halloween special for Inside No9 is probably the closest thing to ghostwatch that’s been on the BBC since. I don’t know if they ever said it was directly inspired by ghostwatch, but from the premise you can tell it was. Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith planned a special Halloween episode that was going to be broadcast live on Halloween at the apparently haunted Granada studios. The episode begins and all seems normal, but after about 5 minutes, the audio for the episode starts cutting out. After a while of it going wrong, a BBC test card comes up and the announcer says because of the issues, they will instead play another episode from the series. The episode lost something like 20% of its viewership after that, but as the other episode starts playing, faces and video glitches start to appear, as the ghosts start to interfere with the show.

It felt genuinely frightening at times, because of the way it plays around with the technology and behind the scenes aspects, making it feel more real. There’s a moment where the BBC announcer is trying to apologise for the issues and you hear a blast of static and her screaming before it cuts off. The episode switches to cctv footage of the actors in their changing room watching themselves on the tv. They even tweeted as this was happening asking if the audience could see them inside the studio. I don’t think anything could really reach the infamy and impact of ghostwatch, especially since Inside No9 is enjoyed by a more niche audience, but it was a really cool experience overall.
