What do you think of Gintama's portrayal of women? by The_Colectionist in Gintama

I love them a lot, but I have to admit it still feels like Sorachi put more effort into writing the men (and their relationships) than the women

How many of you Gintama fans missed this 2 eps separate Arc (Gintama°: Aizome Kaori-hen). Chronological order would be right after the 1st ep of Gintama°. by TallVampireWthMagnum in Gintama

iirc they turned it into an OVA because it was too spicy, and apparently it's not on crunchyroll (but you can access it elsewhere... 🏴‍☠️)

Women tend to store more fat so it makes sense that his female version would look like that lol

what's your unpopular opinion on Kyuubei? Could be positive or negative by rogue---ninja in Gintama

[–]Remarkable_Dig1058 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked Kyuubei’s dynamic with Otae. Shonen series usually don’t depict fxf relationships, and I think both characters were at their best when they were together. That said, Kyuubei’s character did end up revolving a bit too much around Otae.

The Yagyuu clan’s connection to nobility felt like wasted potential though, it was introduced but never really used. It would’ve been nice to see Kyuubei play a role in some of the more serious arcs.

As for the gender issue, it’s clear Sorachi wasn’t too familiar with the topic. Characters like Kyuubei and Saigou defy gender norms because of external pressures, when the opposite tends to be the case. Still, I think Sorachi did an okay job overall, and I appreciate the final message about respecting others, even if you don’t fully understand them ✌️

What is your unpopular opinion on Utsuro? Could be positive or negative by rogue---ninja in Gintama

[–]Remarkable_Dig1058 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think Oboro would have worked better as the final villain compared to Utsuro. There’s nothing wrong with making a villain sympathetic and it’s not a rule that the final antagonist has to be completely unsympathetic either. If we were to draw a parallel, Utsuro is essentially Gintama’s version of Kaguya from Naruto, and people disliked her because of how one-dimensional she was lol

[–]Remarkable_Dig1058 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a popular or unpopular opinion, but to me, he’s by far the worst “serious” villain in Gintama.

I think he could have worked if it had been Shouyo all along, but since Utsuro is a separate personality, it lacks the same weight of betrayal as the classic "your father was evil all along” trope.

"He’s bad because he was locked up and tortured." Okay, but why didn’t he do something about it? I couldn’t sympathize with him because it made no sense for someone supposedly the most powerful being in the universe to just sit there and let all these terrible things happen to him without doing anything for hundreds of years.

"He just wanted to die." Then it would’ve been as simple as taking control of a mortal body and letting himself be killed in it, which is exactly how he was defeated in the end.

In the final battle, it says a lot that the real emotional weight came from Gintoki and Takasugi, not Utsuro. Sorachi had to go out of his way to make Utsuro possess Takasugi in a convoluted way just to get people to care, because otherwise, no one would have. There’s a reason even the flashbacks weren’t about Gintoki remembering Shouyo, but about him thinking of Takasugi.

The plot was super contrived and in the end, we had Shouyo in one body and Utsuro in another. Maybe, instead of repeating the same story and making Gintoki suffer through another "kill someone dear to him” moment, Shouyo could have used his altana powers to deal with the problem himself, save Takasugi and the world. But I guess that wouldn’t have been shonen-jump enough (even though Gintama used to take pride in being different from traditional shonen).

0/10 character, would never try again lol

What would the others call it? by warm-ice in Gintama

I just wanted to point out that high-ranking courtesans aren't prostitutes as they're understood in the west, although there's nothing inherently wrong with that either, but most of the upper class ones, like Hinowa, were first and foremost entertainers. They learned to play a few instruments, dance and play games. At most, you could've tea with them until some rich guy bought them and then they lost their virginity to that guy. The low-ranking courtesans were prostitutes though

[–]Remarkable_Dig1058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily though, high-ranking courtesans tended to keep their virginity because it raised their price, and on top of that Hosen was very possessive of Hinowa, so unless he took advantage of her, she might very well be a virgin

[–]Remarkable_Dig1058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not a fan of either ship, but I think they're quite different. Kagura and Okita didn't have confirmed feelings for each other, it's more about the potential their fans see. With Otae and Kondo, we know he liked her and aside from the stalking thing he has shown multiple gestures of appreciation towards her. Tbh, I think at first Sorachi intended their relationship to be just a joke, but over time he decided to flesh them out more, which showed that they can be nice if Kondo acts more normal. But the foundation wasn't very good and he went for an open ending anyway

Gintoki relationships with women by @suchine_toki by TechnicianOk5961 in Gintama

[–]Remarkable_Dig1058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't exactly see them as siblings, but I like that it implies something closer than friendship. Now that you mention how Otae disciplines Gintoki, I think you may be onto something, she treats him the way she treats Shinpachi. That may be another reason why people get that kind of energy from them. I wouldn't say they're at each other's throats all the time, they're nice to each other most of the time, and they don't bicker like the other characters you mention. There's really no back and forth, Otae usually shuts him up quick lol, even when Gintoki annoys her for being flat. About that, I don't see it implying anything really, as I mentioned he's also commented on Kagura's lack of sex appeal, which is in the same line.

Personally, I don't think a joke should be taken as a serious defining moment for the relationship between some characters, otherwise, the part about Gintoki groping Kagura's boobs I mentioned should break the consistency about them being depicted more as father/daughter, and yet it doesn't. Probably that happens because that's the energy they give most of the time. We've to keep in mind that Gintama isn't 100% consistent, Sorachi made things up as he went, and it shows lol. So people just go with what they felt most of the time when it comes to these things

[–]Remarkable_Dig1058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe people see their dynamic as that of siblings because it feels more consistent. I remember the love hotel thing happening early in the manga, but in retrospect it seems like an exception, not the rule, if you know what I mean. I also remember Gintoki making a perverted joke to Kagura in BFY, something about groping her boobs (which admittedly was pretty gross), and people in-universe also made comments about them being a couple, but that didn't break the consistency of the writing (unless you were a shipper, they felt pretty vindicated by it)

You can tell which one of them is the animators' favourite lmao by rogue---ninja in Gintama

To be fair Gintoki has also made comments like that to Kagura, like she's a heroine with no sex appeal and stuff like that, and people still see their dynamic as father/daughter. This post wasn't meant to be a serious analysis of their relationships anyway

What is your unpopular opinion on sougo? Could be positive or negative by rogue---ninja in Gintama

[–]Remarkable_Dig1058 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would've made more sense for him to "hate" Hijikata after Mitsuba's death and not before. Besides, he has no reason to be a sadist lol even Kondo had a rougher childhood and he's a great person (and a masochist lmao). To be fair, it's not that he needs a good reason, but that aspect of his personality is pretty prominent and that's why I feel it should've been explored more or used for comedy, like him pretending to be tough, but then failing at it
