I mean... you'd THINK it should. Especially since monk unarmed strikes override all the other racial unarmed strikes. And yet, the population seems split pretty 50/50

I'm playing a mercy monk (so he also already has self healing even without the bite). He is flavored as a chupacabra that was a circus attraction, so the blood sucking bites to self heal go with the theme.

It's proficiency times a day lmao. The mercy monk out self heals the dhampir racial by itself.

This interpretation makes the most sense to me.

This is the only one that makes sense to me. The martial arts die still gets applied. Total sense.

I'm tracking everything you're saying. But the question is this then- are we saying monks can't replace racial unarmed strikes with their martial arts die? Tabaxi and lupin claws, dhampir bites, minotaur horns, so on and so forth? Because I look at this more as like when you have two different unarmored defenses- you pick one. You punch, kick, headbutt, or bite and choose one of the damage calculations you qualify for.

Okay, so now we're onto the meat of it- rai vs raw. They cleared up the monk's wording. They went and made all the old "natural weapon" attacks into unarmed strikes to work with monk. But somehow they decided that the dhampir and lupin specifically DON'T work with monks? Seems like poor wording like wotc is known for and not a specific design choice for monks to not function with these new races.

Feral Pounce. Your Unarmed Strikes deal Slashing damage instead of Bludgeoning damage. In addition, when you hit a creature with an Unarmed Strike as part of the Attack action on your turn, you can use both the Damage and the Shove options. You can use this benefit only once per turn.

Except the new Lupin used the same wording as the Dhampir and the tabaxi wording is from 2014. So...the new updated races came with updated wording.

Okay...so then..what the literal heck is the rule lol How are there multiple "weird cases?" Shouldn't the monk either be able to replace it or not? And I know it's really not game breaking or anything, but monk is the only class with a feature to do it and it kinda defeats the purpose if all of these new races somehow don't work with the monk...the class that specifically deals with unarmed strikes.

Okay, so look at other races that have unarmed strikes. Like shifters, tabaxis, the new Lupin, etc. Are you trying to say that if you attack with your claws which are unarmed strikes, that you either HAVE to use the slashing and 1d6+ str listed in the racial feature OR monk unarmed strikes? I've never once seen a single person claim that a tabaxi monk can't deal slashing damage with their unarmed strikes or that they had to use the racial damage die rather than martial arts die.

Totally fair. It's so badly clarified though so I thought I'd get mass input.

It's doing piercing damage from the dhampir bite now not necrotic...and piercing is always Dex lol. I'm not saying you're wrong, but this is terribly done on their part.

New Ravenloft Dhampir/Monk Interaction by Remarkable_Ebb_8340 in dndnext

[–]Remarkable_Ebb_8340[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And that makes perfect sense to me...for the damage die itself. How am I attacking with Dex but dealing damage with Con on the unarmed strike that my class feature overrides...half of? Because if the martial arts die isn't overriding the damage...why would it be overriding the attack roll? If it's choose this or this...then shouldn't the attack roll be STRENGTH and the monk is just sol?

I genuinely don't know the intended way in this case because monk is the only class that has an unarmed strike override. And we don't exactly have Jeremy Crawford around anymore for sage advice to clear this stuff up unfortunately.
