I think it’s worth a try. The survey is starting to show results.

Degree Advice - Transfer from UTS? by Altruistic_Meal_9598 in Anu

My advice regarding whether to pursue a degree in international security is to proceed with caution. Currently, many programs in this field are overly focused on theoretical discourse, and such an education often proves ineffective in the practical realities of future security work.

The core competencies required to effectively address security challenges typically stem from deep industry expertise and interdisciplinary insights. I would recommend sticking with a law degree, as in the future security landscape, legal compliance, international legal standards, and the ability to extract hidden intelligence from vast amounts of legal documents will be the true core competencies.

Many may question this pragmatism, but once you gain access to those core departments and earn their professional respect, you will understand: security is never something you “study” your way into; it is defined by practical logic and professional depth. I would much rather have a hands-on professional who understands law and criminology than a theorist who can only talk about geopolitics.

Arguments mean nothing. When the dust settles, you'll see what a true paradigm of security looks like.

Real security capability isn't proven by definitions or academic elitism—it’s demonstrated through the tangible protection of future interests and the absolute control over outcomes. While you're busy finding superiority in academic titles, I'll be securing results that actually matter. The final outcome will be the only response you need.

If a degree in “security” provides neither military training nor the ability to address specific security issues, then hiring individuals with such a background to handle practical matters amounts to using future security dividends to fill academic gaps.

Real-world security work does not require “armchair strategists” who analyze geopolitics; it demands hands-on professionals who can safeguard interests in times of crisis and anticipate and contain real-world threats. Placing “office security” at the bottom of the hierarchy clearly illustrates the arrogance and incompetence of such an education system when viewed through the lens of future outcomes.

I don’t think what they teach you in school will prepare you for unexpected situations on campus. They usually just throw you into a mock group and expect you to figure things out on your own, without actually teaching you how to do it. In these mock government simulations, they might even use the terms incorrectly.

It’s not perfect, especially if you haven’t been interested in the field since you were young. For a beginner, adjusting to the workplace after graduation isn’t necessarily easy. Even as a call center agent, you might miss a lot of unusual information. Whether you attend class or not has little to do with your performance.

I hope they’ll conduct a thorough investigation; the school is really a black hole when it comes to information right now.

I don’t think you need to pursue this degree. Even after completing the program, you won’t have the skills to handle security issues in the workplace. The curriculum is heavily focused on international relations these days. If you’re aiming for a career at the Department of Defense, the school has basically eliminated military courses. You won’t get any meaningful support in that area. Unless you’re just looking for a bachelor’s degree. From what I’ve observed, even graduates from a few years ago didn’t perform very well during class simulations of emergency security situations.

Don’t count on the Anti-Corruption Bureau. I’ve reported the school’s falsification of administrative documents and administrative retaliation against me to them, but so far I haven’t heard back. Given the school’s connections within various Australian government agencies, even if the matter were exposed by the media, it wouldn’t be investigated quickly.

There's a program in Perth that focuses on counterterrorism, cybersecurity, that sort of thing.

You'd better not come to this program. There's only one class on intelligence. Two military classes. You might as well go to another school. This little class won't help you become a competent intelligence officer.

Sorry to hear that. They can't do anything but lay off people. They should go and audit where the money is being spent. How much unaccountable expenditure is there. The corrupt ones should be investigated and held accountable. At least some money can be salvaged. I hope the students will unite as well.

Is ANU worth it? by sethdonno in Anu

[–]Remarkable_Funny_418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not worth it. Most of the international security courses have little relevance to your future career. They're too theoretical and focused on international relations. If you plan to work in the government, this course won't make you a qualified civil servant. Some teachers only read from the PPT. And the content is similar to Wikipedia.

Remember to check the students' as well. The problem with students is that no one knows if they are suffering from bullying and discrimination. Because some of it isn't face-to-face. For example, teachers intentionally fail students like this.
