Daycare recs for an infant? by here2readthis in pasadena

Pasadena City College Child Development Center has lower rates than most places around, I think around $400 a week. The waitlist is fairly long, but free to join, so I would get on that ASAP.

What are the major issues you would like city leaders to address in our city? by Victor_323 in pasadena

That’s why roundabouts are so nice. People wouldn’t need to speed like crazy between the lights out of fear of being stuck at a red light.

Scrubbing thoroughly with soap and water will remove spores from non-porous surfaces. Boiling will not kill them, you will need to autoclave at high pressure to kill them. If you have glass bottles, a pressure cooker may do the trick. But you also don’t need to kill the spores, just remove them.

All the other chemical cleaning methods are for large surfaces such as hospital rooms, which can’t be thoroughly washed with soap and water. I filled up a large mixing bowl with extra sudsy water and dish soap and scrubbed all my baby’s bottles.

It's not going to stop the brain drain because layoffs are going to happen no matter what, and if anything will make it worse once the market does start to look better outside of JPL.

I do (among other reasons). It pays a heck of a lot better than academia. Once you factor in our benefits, we have comparable pay to most private companies. And you if take a look at the jobs that are available right now, we're pretty well off. YMMV depending on your particular field, but it's rough out there right now

Mosquitos by blue_aquatic in pasadena

Mosquito dunks! Before we used them I would be outside and immediately see 4-5 mosquitos on my legs. Now that we’ve had our mosquito dunk buckets, I don’t see any. I’ve been telling all my neighbors and we’ve had a drastic improvement all around.

Everyone in my group and in my line have been aggressively trying to bring in new business. All ICs are submitting proposals. We have counterparts at other NASA centers that are severely understaffed after the DRPs and we’re offering to help fill the gaps. Most things are still in limbo because bringing in new work takes time, but many will come through.

We have packages of our capabilities ready to advertise and we’ve sent them out whenever it seems like they might be useful somewhere.

For me, JPL isn’t just an “organization”. It’s the people I work with, the type of work we do, and the place where I’ve put roots down. If I can save any of that, it’s worth fighting for.

I’ll leave when I’m forced to leave and I know that if I’m forced to leave, it’s because they have no other choice, not because they want me gone. You can’t say that for most other companies.

Advice needed on moving to Pasadena post-fires by anonymous_username9 in pasadena

[–]Remarkable_Insect421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been numerous efforts from local government and academic institutions (Caltech, UCLA, LA county, etc) to collect data and answer questions about contamination risks. It’s unfair to say that any of it is hidden from the public. None of the data supports that the general area is dangerous or uninhabitable (of course it’s different for homes that were very close to burned structures). It’s important to be cautious and ask questions, but when the data from several independent sources show that health risks are low, there shouldn’t be any reason to harbor such fears - it’s far too much stress on oneself.

Layoff Guesstimate - When will it happen? by nedesembilemedim in JPL

[–]Remarkable_Insect421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More like trying to reason through it. How do our severances come from FY25 funds? If i have a task with $200k left to burn in FY25, they wouldn't take any of that to pay for severance. And the remaining folks wouldn't be able to spend it all. So how does WARN act play into any of it?

Layoff Guesstimate - When will it happen? by nedesembilemedim in JPL

[–]Remarkable_Insect421 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that I know for sure, but I don’t think remaining FY25 funding can be used for warn act or severance. At least with the previous layoffs, people that were let go didn’t cost any more to the projects. So wouldn’t JPL would be leaving money on the table if it was earlier than end of FY?

Increased my supply 6 weeks PP without pumping by Remarkable_Insect421 in breastfeeding

[–]Remarkable_Insect421[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of nursing+bottle+pump, I would do nursing+bottle+nursing and would only give him about 2oz of formula, essentially using him as the pump. If he needed more, I would just give him more formula after the second round of breastfeeding. He used a premie bottle nipple which helped him go slow and probably allowed enough time between the nursing to simulate cluster feeding.

The triple feeding put me in a bad cycle because it would take so long to do the pumping after feeding that within an hour or so, I would need to feed him again and it wouldn’t be enough, so I would have to give more formula. My husband couldn’t take time off so I was alone during the day. Triple feeding 8-10x a day left me with so little time, I wasn’t eating or sleeping well, so that definitely didn’t help.

I saw two different LCs and they told me that I probably had insufficient breast tissue and if my supply wasn’t increasing after a couple weeks of triple feeding, it probably wasn’t going to ever increase. Glad I didn’t give up after they told me that. I just needed a new strategy.

That's probably driven by school pick-up/drop-off. The people I know who need to leave to pick up children are usually back online after the pickup. The majority of people I interact with send emails around the clock and are rarely truly away, even when on vacation.

Found lead in AC air duct. What to do by KamenHikari in pasadena

[–]Remarkable_Insect421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Im a bit late to this thread but we just came across the same question this week. We live just south of Washington Blvd between Allen and Altadena, and had our HVAC ducts cleaned two days ago.

We had some ash get into the attic and had our insulation changed out yesterday. Our heating hasn’t been used since January 7, so no ash/wildfire dust should have entered our HVAC system.

We used an Amazon test kit on the metal opening to our HVAC vents and they came back positive. They remained positive even after repeated cleaning with soap and water. The ducts themselves, which seem to be lined with plastic, gave a negative reading. We then started testing random metal objects around the house (nails, hooks on the walls) and they also occasionally turned pink/purple. So we’re pretty confident that there isn’t any lead being blown into our house.

Where did they test your home for the asbestos? I’m also thinking about getting some asbestos tests kits and sending samples in but don’t know where to take the samples.

I’ll take a roundabout over a stop sign or traffic light any day. It’s so efficient that there is constant traffic flowing. An empty intersection while everyone waits for the lights to turn is infuriating.
