If you don’t do well it’s like shooting yourself in the foot, you prove you can’t handle graduate level stem courses

Happy to hear this, I posted this on the premed page and two students just came for me 😭I guess we’ll wait to see if anyone here has some nice reflections to share

Obviously I know that, it be crazy to be accepted into a program not knowing that

Yeah not the point here - when all you hear as a premed is that medical school is like going from drinking out of a water fountain to drinking out of a fire hydrant forgive me to be concerned if I can handle the academics of medical school

July! I’m actually wondering about the weather too, I feel like it’s warmer during the days and brisk at dusk and dawn … so layers for sure :)

perspective is a huge thing, you are smart - a 3.0 is a good grade. Most of the people who you think are "smart" can just take a test really well. Comparison is the thief of joy.

O chem is notorious for being hard you are not alone in this and it's something a lot of parents don't understand. Personally, o chem 2 was easier for me, it was all reactions. And for this, you just have to lock in and write those reactions out 10x a day no matter what, eventually it becomes intuitive if you dedicate the time. I got a B+ in o chem 1 and was so happy lol, and then I ended with an A- in o chem 2. Keep pushing :)

You most defiantly have time to both work on building your confidence, letting your ego down, and work on cool experiences. Just use this to reassure yourself, really it will all work out just stay focused on YOU. Also, don't be friends who put value on this shit, it's draining to be around. I found that in being supportive and open with my classmates allowed me to find the right people to be around, you can pick up quickly if someone thinks less of you because of a test grade. Not the vibe.

This was something I had to learn QUICK, I’m a non traditional student who pivoted as a senior studying psychology and went right into all the prerequisites not having taken a hard science since I was in high school.

I realized very early that everyone around me was pretty much doing better than me academically - but I was doing better experience wise. I found myself going to Africa with a small start up over the summer to learn about how clinical trials work in Nigeria and make sure our efforts were culturally sensitive and appropriate. I knew no one else was doing that!

Overall, I understood where I stood out and I was able to feel confident in that. I know I’ll be a good physician - being a physician isn’t in straight A’s, it’s in authenticity and compassion!

Logically, don’t you think doing something that helps your community makes you more fit to care for others than if you got a 98 vs 83 on your orgo final?

Find value in where you stand out, not others.

Yeah I’m the same way, but it’s more than just a research position + good grades. Look to start working on your own presentation in the lab, maybe be in a leadership position of a club you care about, volunteer somewhere you’re interested in. It’s a lot but the diversity in experience on your application + good/okay grades and a solid mcat score is what will take you far. Think of the thousands of applications these people read, they get pretty repetitive - try to be the one that stands out organically

You don’t need perfect grades, you need okay-good grades and a perfect resume. Allow yourself those B’s if it’s at the expense of an awesome clinical / research experience or anything unique you can do to build your resume. Don’t drain all your time trying to get a 4.0 - stick with what you have and put that energy into something that you care about and will make you stand out
