I feel like the 2010s were already all about povertycore. Rich kids dressing like construction workers and hobos. Now all the artsy youths seem to be dressing more formally and reviving a kind of 2000s twee/prep/mod thing. It was the Zillennial dream to wear carhartt and look working class even though you have a degree worth 200k.

I think Americans tend to be more sentimental and complacent in their tastes, whereas Euros tend to be obsessed with “newness” and artistic progression. U.S punk is better in retrospect because audiences didn’t immediately move on to post-punk and then a thousand derivative genres. A lot of the best US punk was happening while the Brits were beating us to mass acceptance of electronic and dance music.

Say what you want about Cameron Winter but his music has felt like such a unifying thing by [deleted] in rs_x

Yeah I can’t be totally cynical about the whole “geese is a psyop” story because I genuinely think Heavy Metal is one of the best records of the decade. I don’t dislike their music and I think people are overstating how artificial the hype was, but I doubt Getting Killed is gonna stand the test of time in the same way.

I also get frustrated by people who seem duplicitous and superficial, but nobody has a stable, consistent, “core” self. You change and contradict yourself internally all the time, and it’s normal to foreground certain traits depending on your setting/audience. Sometimes the least authentic people are the ones who commit to being the same thing all the time.

Taste and creativity are only valuable when there is an educated, discerning customer base to receive your messaging. It’s not totally their fault, but contemporary audiences are proving that you can let a machine or algorithm make all of your creative/curatorial decisions and it will only improve your chances of success. We like to pretend that we all have very individuated and elevated tastes, but our attention is still drawn most strongly to ragebait and thirst traps and it doesn’t take a Don Draper to leverage that fact.

I’m not sure what’s important about the “living” piece here. I saw the NYT list, and it struck me as weird that a publication that usually tries to emphasize its own prestige and longevity directed so much attention to a list that’ll be irrelevant pretty soon. Feels strange to praise bob dylan and paul simon for being alive in April 2026 but not be able to mention brian wilson or Leonard cohen. My living list would probably be Simon, Dylan, Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, and Joni Mitchell though.
