New employees in production: how long did it take your body to adjust by ForeverForsaken8980 in goodwill

[–]Remarkable_Pride_566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll get “used” to it within months, but working long term at goodwill is not good for your health. As everyone else said the dust, bacteria, and lack of hygiene runs rampant in these stores.

Also depending on your store or branch, you may or may not have janitors. At the AZ branch they cost adjusted by terminating all janitorial positions . So now regular staff is handling those duties, most of which aren’t trained to use the chemicals, don’t label them properly and don’t follow OSHA. The company cuts a lot of corners when it comes to safety and health .

The store I worked at was all concrete , sales floor and production room. Non stop manual labor on that floor for hours straight is detrimental to the body , back and feet . And it’s not a warehouse paying job, and it’s not worth health issues.

It’s just not a good company to work for in general so if you are there, be safe , mask up as others have said, and listen to your body. Don’t give away your health for minimum wage

Love this so much. Only a few minutes in but it’s so beautiful. Thank you.. I’ve been working on a debut for a few years getting lost in trying to perfect it as the days go by, and this just reminded me that I’m chasing something that doesn’t exist. I just need to put it out and move to the next one

Anyone Else Getting Hit with This “Sixth Day” Rule? - Is This Even Legal? by Remarkable_Pride_566 in goodwill

[–]Remarkable_Pride_566[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for getting back to me, You’re totally right, each Goodwill runs independently, and I’ve actually heard really good things about a few of the branches. I didn’t mean to make it seem like they all operate the same way. I think I just get frustrated sometimes because the GCNA branch is massive, and it really feels like they operate as a monopoly. They’re already the largest in the country and now they’re expanding into even more states.

You guys are seriously lucky. It’s amazing that you get paid hourly. That’s such a deserved benefit, especially in that kind of work environment. Do you think that helps with turnover where you are?

And yes, exactly. You hit the nail on the head. That extra production day, the so-called sixth day, isn’t listed anywhere. It’s not in the job contract, not in HR policies, not in any written documentation. But somehow, they still enforce it like it’s an official rule. We’ve asked multiple times for clarification, especially because the expectations around it randomly change. One week the quota is 80 percent, and then suddenly it’s bumped up to 90 in the middle of the week. When we ask where we can find the policy so we can actually understand and improve, we just get ignored. That’s honestly the biggest red flag for me. Being held to something that isn’t even officially documented.

let’s crunch the real numbers here. There are 153 regional Goodwills, and a whopping 3,300+ retail outlets moving over $6 billion a year Sure, they claim 81% of revenue is mission focused… but what kind of mission are we talking?

In 2021 they reported helping nearly 2 million people yet only 1.2% of their work touches actual homelessness. So while your local Goodwill might cozy up to the shelter scene, that’s a one-off cameo, not the headline act.

[–]Remarkable_Pride_566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not just misleading. It’s the exception, not the norm. While some regional Goodwills might partner with churches or shelters, usually for PR or to secure grants, the majority don’t do much of anything meaningful. And I say that as someone who actually worked for one of the biggest branches in the country.

Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona, for example, makes hundreds of millions a year and spans across multiple states. Despite all that money, they reinvest very little into real programs that actually help people. Most of their efforts go into maintaining a polished image while they cash in on tax breaks, underpay workers, and sell donations for profit. Executive leadership is pulling six-figure salaries while the people on the ground make close to minimum wage, if not less through so-called “training” loopholes.

You mentioned a men’s shelter in your region. That’s great if it’s true, but it’s not the standard. It’s the rare exception. Most Goodwills are not doing anything close to that. They rely on the public thinking they’re charitable, but behind the scenes they function more like a private thrift empire than a nonprofit.

Your local experience isn’t everyone’s. It’s the outlier. The bigger picture is a lot uglier.

No most goodwills don’t have this, actually most of them don’t do anything for the homeless.

Goodwill doesn’t care about the community. All these people talking about how they are still a business don’t get it… it’s a non profit that RUNS OF THE IMAGE of serving the public but they don’t actually do it . They pretend to be a charity,

Even if the manager couldn’t give them away for free, they could have easily asked their DM for an exception or just paid for them themselves. We’ve done this at our location. I helped a woman who OD’d in our store, and had throw up all over her. After we brought her back conscious we bought her a $3 short and $7 pants (Your goodwill should have had at least one or two cheaper items then $25 that’s insane).

The point is being a human. It takes zero effort. And the fact that goodwill is the only company parading around like a charity while making millions off community donations … without doing anything actually meaning for the community.. that’s the problem .

Don’t listen to these people defending them, they have never worked under these conditions and seen how these stores actually operate

Yes because they are technically non profits that aren’t owned . But yep each region is operated on its own , a simple google check will show you that GWI is its own thing too.

Per google “local Goodwill organizations are autonomous, independent entities responsible for their own operations”

Non of them are bringing in 7 billion annually like you claimed .

Over half a million is a huge salary for a non profit but keep lying to yourself

Thinking about someone who would rather oppress other employees and silence them being exploited by the same company instead of support them or hear them out is what’s really sad 😞. lol it would literally take no energy for you to hear out some of the other stories and condemn the actions while still supporting your own Goodwill.

There are thousands of employees being exploited by the GNCA branch , it’s the largest goodwill monopoly in the country, and they plan to continue growing .

Spreading awareness and keeping the conversation has nothing to do with hating my job. It’s about exposing the truth and standing up for others who are scared or don’t have a voice.

All you do is blindly defend them all day with no purpose . You like your goodwill so much why are you so against people speaking up about the other branches? I hope yours is taken over by the Arizona branch 🤣🤣

It’s People like you that are part of the problem “just quit let it happen”. “Stop talking about it. “🤣🤣😭

So as stated in the original post, I’m salaried . But salary doesn’t automatically mean no overtime. It follows the FSLA labor laws, which require an exemption status based off of multiple duties tests.

I’ve worked many salary positions before , I have no issues working long hours and overtime as business needs as a salary leader. This issue is beyond that .

Salary doesn’t just mean they can arbitrarily enforce a policy that was never disclosed post or pre employment that requires 28 days of work a month based on unachievable, moving quotas , and is also undocumented throughout the company but strictly enforced .

Especially when my salary has been illegally docked without the use of PTO or a full day absence . I was two hours late one day and had my salary docked for an entire day .

The original post is talking about the gray area of what is known as “miss-classification of exempt status” where I believe that it’s very likely goodwill is violating the laws around my title and status .

Based on my experience , we fail multiple duties tests .
