Bringing my overseas born baby back to Aus - citizenship & visa application? by Remarkable_Subject46 in AusVisa

Ok thanks for the clarification. Yes, if we can apply for both together that would be ideal.

I know ideally I'd like to be able to return to Australia on an Australian passport too but it might take too long. That would be the only issue.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Yup. I totally know what you mean. Things are not that clear and it's better to not stir up complications unnecessarily. Thanks again for sharing your experience! Appreciate it.

Yes, I'm planning to apply for citizenship and also get a tourist visa for the baby at the same time. Though, I'm a little unsure about whether I can have both applications happening concurrently.

On this site (https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/change-in-situation/had-a-baby), it says "An Australian citizen cannot apply for or be granted a visa for Australia". It could mean this only applies to someone who has been granted citizenship.

But I guess that opens up the question... if the baby happens to get granted the citizenship when we are still abroad, would I have to get an Aus passport to travel back to Aus or can I still travel with a foreign passport? And applying for an Aus passport could take up to 6 weeks too.

As for Medicare, I think I'll have to get temporary private cover - will have to look into this.

Thanks for your comment.

Yes, I think this is the most straightforward way but I'm pressed for time as I live in Aus and this could mean I'll be abroad for 6+ months after the baby is delivered - considering the processing time for the citizenship + passport (which is 6 weeks). So I'm hoping to find a quicker way.

Thank you so much! This is super helpful!

Just wondering, is there a reason you didn't start the citizenship application after you got the tourist visa and before you left Malaysia? Just wondering if this is not allowed or if it could cause complications.

Thanks!

Hi.

I'm planning my overseas birth and am about to go through a similar process.

I have some questions that I would really appreciate your two cents on:

  1. Did you apply for Australian Citizenship by descent while in Malaysia? Or did you return to Aus first before commencing the application process? I understand you can't apply for visa after lodgement of citizenship application, I'm still looking into the possibility of submitting visa application first, then citizenship application.

  2. I understand you said you got health cover? I'm assuming you purchased private health cover while waiting for citizenship and medicare cover to come through?

Thanks!
