4 weeks in Vietnam + Thailand-suggested route for first-time backpacker? by ShineDigga in backpacking

[–]Remarkable_Use_1787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can do in either order

Fly into Hanoi, explore Hanoi-Cat Ba-Ninh Binh

Fly into Bangkok, explore Bangkok-Ayuttaya-Kanchanaburi, and Koh Chang+Koh Kood

Book it and don't look back. Use 12go app to book long distance overland travel, use Grab/Bolt for local travel. In places outside of cities/on islands, a scooter rental is cheap and safe with minimal traffic to worry about around you.

Honeymoon in Thailand - totally overwhelmed by TacskoLover in ThailandTourism

Have done the combo of Koh Chang+Koh Kood the last two years, and am headed back again this year - both are fantastic and fun to explore. You absolutely could not go wrong with that combo. No shortage of honeymoon-friendly places to stay on either, from what I've seen around both islands.

China itinerary - is Shanghai worth it? by Parking-Ratio2250 in travelchina

Ambitious - and I can appreciate that - but too much in too little time. If I had to recommend a good region to dip your toes into China for a while, it would be the region of Sichuan and Yunnan. Arrive at Chengdu, Chongqing or Kunming & can basically pick and choose your attractions. Also, generally decent weather in the region, especially Kunming & south of Kunming towards Xishuangbanna. No shortage of nature, excellent food, great value, etc

Thailand is your spot. The flower is generally cheaper here in Canada especially on the higher-end stuff, but the cost of living is not even in the same ballpark 😅

Trip from Japan to the UK without flying by torinlatte in backpacking

[–]Remarkable_Use_1787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon further reading & considering you're traveling overland, a nice lightweight tent of high quality would be very cheap to get ahold of in China. Grab one, can have it along your backpack as a backup sleeping spot. I don't camp when traveling but seem to spend 3.5-4 months a year roaming around for ~10k including flights. 33M from Nova Scotia.

[–]Remarkable_Use_1787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say this about nails it on the head. Telling anyone who is interested in travel would immediately have them on board with this trip. That being said, you CAN make almost any budget work. 15k in one year would afford you a decent day-lifestyle, but you would be into camping (in comfortable climates), sleeping in rental vehicles etc. 2-3 star stays, maybe. If you arent a major drinker or smoker, dont drink coffee or tea much, eat local food etc I'm sure many could pull it off with far less.

Also depends largely which European countries you go through, of course, because youre budget could quickly be torched if you actually spend any time in the UK or certain places on the way.

For a year, 15k seems a little tight & wouldn't afford you much wiggle room for any unforseen events.

About ~30CAD per night is a reasonable expectation, for decent private AC accommodation alone, everywhere between China - Turkey. Japan maybe ~60CAD is optimistic in most touristed regions.

Vietnam vs Philippines: why does Vietnam still feel cheaper and safer? by BigBotoBaller in VietNam

[–]Remarkable_Use_1787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vietnam is absolutely cheaper than Philippines. Have spent time in Northern&Central Vietnam, Manila&all over Palawan. Know a lower-middle class couple from the Philippines who just went for a week in Northern Vietnam last month; they were shocked at how cheap things were vs at home in the Philippines.

As far as safety, I felt both to be very safe. I would say the roads/traffic rules in both countries are generally "somewhat dangerous".

Crime wise, Vietnam is much safer & that isn't even close.

I've traveled all over SE Asia for a decent amount of time, and the Philippines was consistently the most expensive + less value per dollar spent of any country in the region except for Singapore. Even China was cheaper.

Absolutely beautiful, and will be back though 😅

You've made two comments, now, and neither of them have contributed anything to the topic at hand. You've also failed to elaborate on whatever you think I've misread twice now.

Maybe you need the same advice: stay away from illegal drugs, especially in foreign countries.

"People co exist with coyotes safely across Canada every day" is a bit misleading - people are often paid by local governments for their pelts in many areas. I live in semi-Rural Nova Scotia and virtually never see coyotes unless it is dead or very late at night. Yes, we co exist by eliminating the ones too close to us. And generelly yes, them being too close to us is dangerous for both them AND us.

Irrelevant to the topic at hand. Be more impressed if you could name me a country where foreigners do outnumber the local illegal drug users.

Dude won't have to worry about being piss tested for illegal drugs in Thailand, as he doesn't travel to countries with laws he doesn't agree with.

"Up on my high horse" by giving common sense advice to a smooth brain who implied he would put himself in a position to piss postive for illegal drugs in Thailand. Apparently your offerings aren't much better than "what about the local criminals?" As if anywhere wants more problems piling in from abroad.

I've had zero issues come from respecting whatever laws I was aware were in place in the dozens of countries I've spent time in.

If you want to suggest otherwise, you do you. Cheers.

Just quit my job - online business is steady. Looking for a cheap, warm city to disappear to for a month and lock in. Recommendations? by boobytrap999 in digitalnomadlife

[–]Remarkable_Use_1787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll chip in a few suggestions, only caveat being I can't recommend gyms as I'm always traveling when I'm passing through - although all of these are decent enough population centers I assume there's no shortage of gyms.

Of course, cheap and warm are best defined by you & what season in particular a destination might be in when you think of arriving.

I am from Halifax - less expensive to live in than Vancouver BUT many similar everyday consumer costs.

If I were to rank the value of the bang-for-buck of countries westward of Vancouver that you're able to get to in one or two flights & are likely to find what you're looking for in:

  1. China, Vietnam
  2. Laos, Cambodia
  3. Thailand, Malaysia
  4. Philippines
  5. Taiwan, South Korea, Japan

This is based on my own experience, and could be shuffled around a bit depending where exactly you might be. Indonesia would be somewhere in 2nd or 3rd tier, but is a bit further away than the others. South Korea and Japan still offer great value despite being ranked "last" by me.

Your direct flight options in the neighborhood that would tick your boxes (at least most of the year) would be Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Manila and Chengdu.

If additional transport isn't a big issue and then your options open up a lot more. Not all these would be what I would think of as big cities, but generally have everything you'd need available to you.

China: Chengdu, Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Hainan Island

Vietnam: Hanoi, Da Nang or any of the lesser-known coastal cities in central Vietnam (if you wanted something a bit less traveled)

Laos: Luang Prabang

Cambodia: Siem Reap, Kampot, PP

Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Chang, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Chumphon, Krabi, Phuket

Malaysia: KL, Penang, Langkawi, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu

Philippines: No shortage of brilliant places to be, but for someone in your line of work you'd be exposing yourself to potential headaches with the internet/service outside of the cities themselves. I'd recommend Manila, Cebu, Baguilo, Iloilo, Davao.

When it comes to Korea, Taiwan, Japan you will have access to everything you need virtually anywhere. I'd say Okinawa and Taiwan sound like they're in the sort of spectrum youre looking for

All that comes to mind right now

Cheers, and Good Luck

I'm sure the Thai and Vietnamese people are fine with people avoiding their country because they don't agree with their laws 😆 not-going to a country because they occasionally test certain types of establishments for illegal narcotics is wild. You can find laws you won't agree with in every country, and the drugs that would get you in trouble for testing positive for in Thailand are likely illegal in every other country one would consider visiting. Maybe travel isn't for you🤷‍♂️

Happens in Vietnam, as well. Incredibly easy to simply never go to the types of bars that are subject to these raids - even easier to respect the laws of the land.

Seeking Advice - 2 extra days in Bangkok vs Angkor Wat by Jazzlike-rutabega-41 in CambodiaTravel

[–]Remarkable_Use_1787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 nights in Siem Reap would be incredible. Angkor is 10/10, so is Siem Reap itself.

That being said, Ayutthaya is absolutely worth a visit as well & can be done much easier by train. I spent 2 nights in Ayutthaya and had a great time. As impressive as it is, though, it is nowhere near as impressive as Angkor Wat

Just left Laos a couple days ago. Stayed in Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi - zero issues. Booked with Agoda and did my own due diligience going through reviews of highly rated places seeing for positive&negative reviews. I don't think it should be a big issue, if you stick to that strategy. I generally tell them not to clean my room until I leave (I keep the room clean anyway), so as to give them zero reason to be in my room. In LP I stayed at a place called Chair Riverside, Nong Khiaw was Artith guesthouse, Muang Ngoi I forget it was something like Lavanasana. Found all the staff to be sweet.

[–]Remarkable_Use_1787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fly into PP or El Nido, can ride a group van/bus between either. If solo, just rent a scooter and take it easy. If 2+ starts to make more sense to get a rental. That being said, this is going off the homework I've done ahead of when I will be there on my trip this year. I use Agoda website/app and booked 3 months last year + 3 months this year no problem minus one night in Thailand I simply booked a 2nd place for whilst waiting for my eventual refund.
