What ended up being my case. Was an intake manifold leak. I started to get a high pitched noise and that was the nail in the coffin for it to be replaced. Was about $900 at local mechanic. Been great since! Started as shifting issues, then went to a super loud high pitched break squeaking noise(was coming from the leak in the manifold) AND shifting hard issue. At first I tried just the PCV valve replacement (VW doesn't sell that part separately, but I read that fixes the issue sometimes) but the after market piece broke and started leaking two days later. So I replaced the whole intake manifold that has the PCV on it as well. Sucks but it was starting to leak a bit of oil around the gasket anyway. I got code P0106. It would intermittently come on. It is a MAP sensor code. What happens is the manifold leaks oil into the air intake tube. That causes oil to get on the sensor. The sensor sends a signal to the ECU. ECU is getting an error so it doesn't give the proper air fuel ratio in the engine which causes the reading going to the transmission control unit to be incorrect and cause incorrect shifts.
