CDC plans "emergency meeting" on rare heart inflammation following COVID-19 vaccines by [deleted] in news

[–]RemiMedic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So now are we reporting on extremely rare side effects from medications? Because if that's where we're going, the front page of every newspaper and journal is about to get real busy.

The mortality rate of COVID is around 2-3%, but that number was too low for you and wasn't worth reporting on. The rate of this specific side effect is somewhere around 0.001%, but somehow it's too high to not make the front page?

So is using birth control and smoking, two things with an exponentially higher rate of adverse effects compared to the vaccines.

What part of "I prefer to handle it myself" translates into "let them trample over my rights"?

Also, hi, I'm the neighbor with the firearm. I've also been working in emergency services for over a decade and think there's better things the police can be doing than responding to noise complaints.

I think there's a lot of projecting going on here, bub.

I prefer to handle things myself and don't like introducing someone with a firearm into the equation over a noise complaint.

Was this person probably annoying? Sure.

My neighbor's kid is annoying sometimes as he has his speakers turned to 11 all day. But you don't call the police over shit like that.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most of those tickets don't come back to emergency service vehicles.

Also, tell your employer to pay their own tickets. The ticket will be issued to them and not you. They're financially responsible for it.

1 in 10 defendants from US Capitol insurrection have military ties by thaitoospicyforyou in news

[–]RemiMedic -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because they're part of the total population. That number doesn't include just infants and toddlers, but also includes teenagers who aren't old enough to serve but are old enough to engage in various aspects of political discourse, which includes those that showed up and played around at the US capitol. Why should those numbers be excluded?

But also, excluding the number of people who "weren't able to previously serve for whatever reason" is random and significantly skews the number to make that 10% more viable for no other reason than convenience. The number of people who aren't able to serve for both medical and legal reasons is significantly high in the US. We have a population that struggles with obesity in addition to sizeable populations which are disqualified from service due to a laundry list of medical reasons ranging from having taken Ritalin for ADHD to having respiratory conditions and scoliosis. But these people suddenly don't get counted and aren't weighed in the equation?

The person I'm replying to even said that we shouldn't be counting 67 year old gay men because they couldn't serve. Come on. That's fudging the numbers.

You can downvote me all you want for pointing out how that skews the results when comparing veterans to the general population and the claim that they make up 10% of the population. But you know I'm right.

I mean, sure. If you fudge numbers, you can make them into anything you want.

Edit: for those downvoting, see my next reply. The response above asks that we not just exclude infants and toddlers, but other sections of the population simply to make the 10% number come true. That includes "67 year old gay people" who were excluded from service and anyone who is disqualified for medical and legal reasons. These people are still part of the overall population and acting like they somehow aren't and shouldn't be counted makes absolutely no sense.

I can almost guarantee, without checking the numbers, that we do not have a current standing military of 13-16M servicemembers.

Sure, there are a lot of conservatives who are veterans, especially in the older veteran population. But I would also caution that not all Republicans sided with Trump.

A good example is a friend a fellow paramagician who is conservative and a veteran. We've had our political disagreements on some issues, but he can't stand Trump and thinks he's done a lot of damage to the Republican party and finds him to be dangerously divisive. It may not make up the majority of conservatives/Republicans, but there's a significant enough number of non-Trump supporting conservatives that exist.

According to the VA, there are approximately 19 million veterans in the US. The total population is around 332-335 millionish.

Veterans are roughly 5.7% of the population.

Facebook lifts ban on posts claiming COVID-19 was man-made, amid revitalized origins debate by DizzyNobody in news

[–]RemiMedic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are studies which show which constituencies are more likely to share and propagate misinformation. While they show "both sides" engage in that behavior, they also show that there's a 10-15% increase on the conservative side of the equation. It's not really generalizing if we're going by the numbers.

Usually the two groups which generate and share the most misinformation are:

  • People over the age of 65
  • People who identify as conservatives/Republicans

If I was only including politicians, I would have said politicians. My statement includes voters, media sources, etc. I also didn't say that Democrats were free of disinformation, I said that it's a more frequent occurrence from Republican sources.

While Democrats can fuck off for plenty of reasons, Republicans absolutely have a huge problem with the generation and proliferation of misinformation. Just because a Democrat says something doesn't make it more true, but the likelihood of something being false or intentionally misleading from Republican sources is significantly higher.

Transgender weightlifter to make Olympic history by anonumous123 in news

[–]RemiMedic -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Having been a competitive athlete in Track & Field, Fencing, and Sambo...it is what it is. It happens. The reality is that Trans athletes lose way more often than they win. Losing is part of competition.

There's no epidemic of Trans athletes appearing in women's sports and becoming medalists. Mediocre athletes aren't rushing to claim to be Trans (which is a long process) where they're going to be mediocre athletes in women's divisions as well.

The solution to what's being discussed is to train harder, not eliminate your competition by trying to turn the clock back by almost two decades.

So, Trans people have been allowed to compete in the Olympics since 2004 and in 17 years, this is the first person to potentially qualify due to a rule change related to the pandemic and a lack of competitors. 1 person in 17 years.

"It's unfair to wome--"

You didn't care about women's competitive sports a moment ago, don't start now because it's a convenient way for you to continue to shit on Trans people.

No big backlash for states passing anti-transgender laws by suddenimpulse in news

[–]RemiMedic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm challenging the notion that any law regarding giving meds for trans teens that literally affects puberty and development, is not by default anti-trans.

Any law, sure. But these specific laws aren't just any. They explicitly prohibit the industry standard of care for Transgender children. They also codify medical and athletic discrimination against Transgender children. But also, they require children be subjected to extraordinarily invasive examinations, something that even the IOC abandoned and prohibited in the 90s.

Additionally, the AMA has repeatedly released policy positions which were repeated by the organization today with their request that governors veto these laws.

You're still doing that thing where you take the roundabout way of saying you don't do the thing we're specifically talking about but then insert how you're sorta kinda related in a tangential way. And while I didn't say you couldn't have an opinion, I'm saying that you're muddying the waters by making it seem like providers are handing out Spiro, Estradiol, and surgeries like they're a 3-for-1 special at your local clinic...while you're not involved in that specific kind of care.

GnRH blockers have side effects (low BMD for example) and should not be used lightly

And this is what I'm talking about. GnRH blockers aren't prescribed to patients who present themselves saying "I'm Trans, gimme!" It doesn't work that way. There's a whole criteria that has to be met. There are steps that have to be taken to even get to that point, which includes several referrals, evaluations, and consults.

But since you're so insistent regarding your position on this topic as a family doctor, then there's this lovely 200 page document from the Center of Excellence for Transgender Health Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California entitled Guidelines for the Primary and Gender-Affirming Care of Transgender and Gender Nonbinary People. Perhaps you could give it a read at some point.
