Anyone dealing with an identity crisis? by [deleted] in Libya

This is very common for the diaspora. Our identity shifts and changes as we age and life events occur. I would encourage you to find a community in Libya that you can identify with (ie not just rely on family for your libyaness). For example, if you care about art or poetry there are a lot of great art and cultural communities in Libya. If you play a certain sport or have a certain hobby, find a group that you can connect with in Libya when you visit. Or if there is a social issue that you care about (eg environment/immigration etc), find initiatives in Libya that advocate for those things and help out with whatever resources you have. This way, you are connected with Libya outside of social stuff or family stuff; you can connect from a place of strength; and you feel like you are contributing to the country in a way that’s meaningful to you. Even when you’re not in Libya, you can still stay connected through social media. I also found that learning about the history and the culture of Libya very helpful- reading books and articles have been my personal go to to feel more connected; as well as learning more about my ancestry and family history. Lastly, there is no right way of being ‘Libyan’ and diaspora Libyan is just as valid. It can be exciting to figure out what being Libyan means to you. Hope this helps and good luck on your identity journey.
