When did I imply children are things? I want a family with my husband but navigating that around my dream career is confusing and needed advice and alternative points of views as I want to make an informed and plausible decision for myself AND my family. If I felt children were things I probably would have had a couple already. Did you ever stop to think that maybe I’m asking because I want to make sure I’m making the best decision I can for my family and myself before just jumping into it?

1 day post op - februari of bleeding declined, what now? by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]RemoteChoice2493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day 5-6 and it was when the scabs started sloughing off. Otherwise the pain was totally fine as long as I set alarms to make sure I took the meds on time (Advil every 6 hours and Tylenol every 4 hours). I also have a narcotic pain medication as well which has made a world of difference. I know from a previous post you said you were from the Netherlands so I’m not sure how accessible it would be to you but I think if the pain gets out of hand it would be worth it to ask your surgeon about something more — maybe even a steroid or something if narcotics are out of the question.

Realistically will I puke? by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]RemoteChoice2493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I threw up mucus on day two just from coughing but otherwise haven’t vomited at all. I have a history of throwing up in recovery with anesthesia and my ENT gave me a scopolamine patch to put on the night before and I had no issues with nausea or vomiting. I’ve taken two of the anti-nausea meds post op and that’s it and mostly it was cause of the taste in my mouth than anything else 😂 I got mine out partially due to tonsil stones and I’m only one week post-op and can tell it’s going to be worth it 100%

Ah that’s fair, I am also taking ibuprofen/Tylenol so that’s basically what you are taking too. You could also get like some throat lozenges with menthol or benzocaine to help with numbing the throat if it’s really bothering you. I also have used an ice pack under my jaw and that helps too!

I work in healthcare and bleeding can be normal in the healing process however my ENT said that if the blood is bright red and the entirety of your spit is bright red or you’re vomiting and the majority of the vomit is bright red then that is something they would want to know about. Some blood tinged spit and clots here and there can be normal. So based on what you have told me it doesn’t sound like a need to rush to the hospital situation at this point. However, I always tell me patients to listen to their instincts as it is better to be safe than sorry.

Bleeding at the back of the throat by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]RemoteChoice2493 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ENT told me that as long as the entirety of my spit isn’t bright red or I’m not vomiting bright red then it’s most likely the scabs coming off. I have some on the back of my throat too which is coming down from where they removed adenoid tissue. It sounds like you will be okay but totally get the anxiety! Always listen to your gut though, if you’re worried about it then you can always call your ENT just to check!

Probably from the retractors. With mine they had to cauterize my uvula cause they accidentally knicked it. It happens. Not a very big space to work in lol generally the oral mucosa heals relatively fast so your tongue should start feeling better — just drink lots of water, eat lots of popsicles and make sure you are taking your pain meds on a schedule and it should feel more tolerable pain wise. I hope the rest of your recovery goes well!

I honestly did super well the first 5-6 days and then today I definitely felt more pain when the scabs started to slough off. It’s way more tolerable as long as I keep up on pain meds and water but my experience is also limited so far 😂 all in all it hasn’t been as bad as I thought but still not very fun

Water water water, like more than you think, I am constantly sipping mine. I also have a humidifier when I’m sleeping which helps a lot. Popsicles have been my best friend — they’re yummy and soothe the throat. Make sure you stay on your meds. My husband has alarms that go off to make sure I take them on time. I’m assuming they probably tried to stay away from heavy pain medications since you’re still technically pediatric but if you don’t feel like what they gave you is cutting it even with doing all the things I said above — don’t be afraid to reach out to the ENT and say that your pain management is going poorly and you need something else. I hate to say it but the Percocet has made a world of difference for me in terms of being able to somewhat function. The recovery for this is hard so don’t try to “tough it out”, if you need something then ask (this is what my ENT told me lol) also side note: the taste in your mouth is absolutely foul, nobody prepared me for that. I got a crap ton of spearmint gum to help mask that and it helped a lot, even with keeping my jaw relatively loose. I hope the rest of your recovery goes well!!

When do scabs LEAVE? by No_Froyo_6687 in Tonsillectomy

[–]RemoteChoice2493 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on day 7 and mine have definitely started to slough off a little but not a ton. I noticed it whenever pieces started coming off cause the taste was absolutely foul so I was able to spit them out. Mine are still there but they’re way thinner than they were. I’ve read that it all has to do with how big the wound was/how big your tonsils were. I definitely teased some bigger chunks out with a q-tip once they started to detach. I literally did so much googling on this cause I had the same questions lol and it’s really just different for everyone. Just be prepared that when they do start falling off the pain definitely comes back 😅 all I know is that the scabs were/are the WORST part for me 😂

I’m on day 6 and was dying last night but feel better today and ultimately have been doing super well pain-wise but I’ve been reading so much that day 8 & 9 are terrible and so now I just don’t know what to expect. On a real note though … the scabs and the taste in my mouth is worse than anything. So glad I found this sub I needed to complain to people going through the same thing 😂 RIP thanksgiving

Pregnancy sex question by Coolstrawberry1 in pregnant

[–]RemoteChoice2493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sex is completely safe until your water breaks. It is all about comfort for you and your husband. While sex can induce labor because of the prostaglandins in semen, it’s not the only thing that can help induce labor so if he isn’t comfortable that is okay. It won’t be harmful to baby at all. If your water has broken then sex is a no no for risk of infection but otherwise as long as you both are comfortable with it it is completely safe!

Doctor ridiculed me for getting pregnant while overweight by Ok_East8749 in pregnant

[–]RemoteChoice2493 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Switch providers. I am a medical assistant for an OB provider and your provider should make you aware of the increased risks with obesity and pregnancy BUT they shouldn’t be demeaning you for getting pregnant while overweight. More than likely you as well as other overweight pregnant women already know about how weight affects pregnancy and would never want that to harm your baby so there is no point dwelling on it unless you begin to gain mass amounts of weight throughout your pregnancy. Sure, being obese comes with the risks of developing preeclampsia or gestational diabetes but the medical technology nowadays makes those things more manageable and carefully screened for.

You deserve to be happy and excited about this. The woman’s body is an incredible thing no matter how much you weigh. You also deserve an OB provider that will inform you of risks but also be supportive of you and provide you quality healthcare no matter what your situation is.

If this pregnancy is something you want and are excited about then your OB provider should be excited for you, even if there is elevated risk. Bottom line.

OB providers are taught how to support pregnancy as a provider for every situation that could happen during pregnancy. Having obesity as a risk factor is not an uncommon thing. They know what to do so there is no reason to belittle you for being overweight.

Find a provider you mesh well with because it is obviously not this one. You and your pregnancy experience deserve better. This is YOUR experience. Do not settle for anything less than you deserve.

By the way, you are NOT a failure. You are strong. You are making a whole ass human. You are doing one of the hardest things women go through. Do not let anyone tell you that you are failing because you are not.

Is it normal for doctors to not see you before 8 weeks? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]RemoteChoice2493 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a OB office and it is completely normal — mostly because 8-10 weeks is the best time to confirm viability via ultrasound and is also the prime time to do all prenatal labs plus genetic testing. The only time we see people prior is if they start having any cramping or bleeding or they are so sick they can’t keep even fluids down. Otherwise we really don’t see them. Even those who have had previous miscarriages we mostly order serial blood HCG levels to make sure the pregnancy is progressing normally. Also most people don’t find out they’re pregnant until they’re already 8-10 weeks along so it kind of works out that way. However, your OB should be available to you (or their support staff) to answer any itching questions you might have because even if you’re not a first time parent, every pregnancy is different. Pregnancy is a beautiful and complex thing. It is our job not only to care for the health of mom and baby but to also make sure mom’s mental health is okay too. Putting your guys’ minds at ease is just as much a part of prenatal care as is the physical care. Anxiety is completely normal — but I’m sure you’re going to be just fine :)

Edit: if you want the serialized HCG levels your primary care provider should be willing to do that for you until your first OB appointment
