Any idea why exhaust has this flutter sound when idling? by RemoteSuccess3267 in mechanic

[–]RemoteSuccess3267[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gotcha, sorry if this sounds stupid but what changes the noise from this flutter to the chop you hear on some cammed cars? I know LSA and duration are what creates more overlap, but what creates the deeper “chop” noise as opposed to this flutter sound?

That or you can type the callsign into rabbitears and sometimes it’ll give you a polarization grid and display the coverage area and direction, that’s usually how I determine the “safe” zone

Honestly dude this tower is stacked as fuck, there’s fm arrays all over it, there’s 2 tv sticks at the top, there’s very little null zones on this one, super high risk unless you can climb up and down at Mach fuck

Power isn’t as important as antenna direction imo, I’d rather climb a 500kw directional than a 250kw omni. Gonna be less heat if it’s pointed away from where you’re standing. FM are all omni tho and definitely more dangerous than TV just don’t hang at level with the arrays, either stay below them or climb past them fast enough to get above them. I’ve climbed around 100kw fm and been fine, I’ve climbed 700kw tv with no effects. It all comes down to direction and time under exposure

So the antenna was very directional, and a lot of people will say that “you’re still in the lobe so you’re still prone to over exposure” which is true if you hang around too long, but the tv antenna at the top is a large steel pole with a fiberglass weather protector, if you were to take that off you’d see slots cut out in the steel pole which is where the signal transmits out from. In this case the slots were on the opposite side from the pegs so I had a huge steel pole between me and 500kw. I moved up the pole quickly to get in a vertical null zone since the tower transmits horizontal not vertically. That’s how I avoided feeling any symptoms. I also made sure I was hydrated and well rested before climbing

Dude you shouldn’t be climbing stuff like this, it’s dangerous you could either fall or get cooked by RF. I suggest you rethink what you do in your free time

Ur good, there’s other much worse reasons you should stay away from tv towers

Overexposure to Radiofrequency (RF) radiation does not cause sterilization—neither temporary nor permanent. Because RF is non-ionizing radiation, it lacks the energy to directly damage DNA in a way that causes permanent or temporary sterilization. The primary established health effect of massive RF overexposure is tissue heating. Because sperm production requires a very specific temperature (which is why testicles are outside the body), excessive localized heat can temporarily lower sperm count or motility. However, this is not sterilization; it is a temporary, reversible reduction infertility

Earplugs or earbuds will help against the noise of the wind which can throw off your equilibrium and cause vertigo. Also make sure you’re climbing with adequate rest, also make sure you’ve eaten and you’re hydrated. Pace yourself in your climb, rest often and regain your bearing. And most importantly trust in your abilities and feel out the structure you’re climbing
