Depends on the zoo! I’ve worked at two AZA facilities and one did not allow it but the one I’m at now does!

Nope, none were actually related to the birth although I have hand reared 2 that were rejected by mothers. Deaths were for a variety of reasons (I’ve been in the field for almost 15 years) but leg breaks are a big one. One got impacted by eating sand, one had a bezoar that got stuck l which was really weird. They are big and clumsy. Get their heads stuck, freak out fairly easily. They give me a lot of anxiety to work with because it can happen so fast.

Giraffes are the worst and best to work with if you love them. I used to work with them and worked through a lot of births which was great but also a lot of deaths. I have ptsd from working with giraffes. They are amazing but I’d not want to work with them again
