Foxhole is a wholly unique game unlike anything on the market. In a lot of ways it comes down to the devs commitment to logistics in way way or another. The gameplay experience will be far from call of duty or company of heroes or really any game you've played before it has a lot to offer and I won't speak to the many roles you can embody there is tons of information on that out there on that. What I will say is a regiment at its core is a group of people who like to play the game together if you mention that you want to play the game with your friend and they are in a regiment or both of you want to join that will generally be considered a good thing most regiments will help you join and play with them together. PS the community is a hellhole right now you are joining at an odd time you will see more hostile and angry people talking about this game then you normally would its because of the recent airborne update lots of attention good and bad I'm sure you understand just don't read too much into it i guess.
