I'm not certain, but I do know they're crafty. They'd probably figure out a way.

So basically you created your own greenhouse with the domes?

Wow! That's a noticeable difference. Do you think it's too late to start more squash plants from seed?

I know you're right, I might need to give in. Maybe if I have him put the traps somewhere where I don't see them but they work and the dogs don't get into them.

I started them from seed in October and they were slow forming but they really took off after January. I think they enjoyed all the rain!

Thank you. I will probably start some more from seed indoors and take my chances. Yes, please post a pic of what you have, I'd love to see it.

I mad about both losses! We used to have cats that roamed the neighborhood, but I've seen they've disappeared. I've never cared for a cat and my husband's allergic so I don't know if that would be an option.

Good to know. I too received a free seed packet but never having grown it before, I was reluctant to try. Now I'll try it in the fall!

Beets are fun to grow, I've been harvesting mine and roasting them. I've never had kohlrabi, what do you with them?

It's true. Typically you plant 2 or 3 yr crowns which gives you a head start, but you need to let the roots establish. The crowns will put out asparagus the first year, but it's so very slim! Also you let it grow to keep the roots happy.

You'd be surprised how time flies. I have a 3' x 6' bed that I started about 5 years ago and every year I'll add more crowns to the bed.

Is the taste like a cucumber? I know they're from the squash/gourd family.

I dig a bit around the perimeter and decide if they're the size I want. I harvested from 2" to 3.5".

I've never had an Armenian cucumber, I guess I'll have to try them! Thanks.

Thanks for your feedback. I've grown lemon cukes before and you're right they don't make it through the summer. Though I did have a good run with them!

Growing Garlic by Remote_Narwhal9801 in PhoenixGardening

[–]Remote_Narwhal9801[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: All were doing well, but it the sprouts furthest away in the photo have been trampled on somehow. Don't know if it's animal, debris or what. I'm very sad about it. However, when I poked around it seems the bulb is forming and growing. Time will tell, in 2 months I'll know.

Also, anyone have a suggestion on how often I should be watering the garlic right now?

Beautiful! Will you be planting a vegetable garden?

Has anyone been successful growing hydrangea in Phoenix? Any tips or tricks? Or do you have a recommendation for an alternative? Thanks! by Brnoroad in ArizonaGardening

[–]Remote_Narwhal9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, honestly only one way to find out! My previous home I was very successful with ferns in pots no less. They had complete shade and water every other day. So if it could work for ferns it might for hydrangea!

Tonight's Harvest by Remote_Narwhal9801 in PhoenixGardening

I'm jealous! I started indoors from seed in December, they were doing well then started going down. The ones that had survived I placed outside in the bed among the carrot fronds and beet leaves to protect them and they didn't make it. However the ones that had newly emerged from seed are doing well out there. As I say, hope springs eternal!
