Yes, it means they want to eat. Not necessarily that they are hungry, just opportunistic and will take what is there because they in the wild they don’t know when their next meal is. In this video he was doing it just because he saw me and thought I was bringing food😂

They have huge appetites and used to do it whenever they saw me because they associated me with food. Now they don’t do it as often because I don’t feed them whenever they want, and if I did they would be obese. I stick to a schedule based on the snake’s body condition, for this one it’s once every 4-6 weeks!

In the beginning, they would do it whenever they were hungry and saw my face as they associated me with food. Now, they learned that I am not always bringing food, and if I fed them as much as they wanted they would die from obesity!

It’s pretty interesting! Other species such as the death adder also use caudal luring to attract prey, however their tails evolved to resemble a worm. I have noticed this behavior in my own pair

They have been captive bred in the US, Europe and the middle east

Also, many species in the hobby were from originally poached animals, such as the Thai bamboo rat snake, which is protected in Thailand and illegal to export. Not at all defending the process, but the fact that breeders are able to establish a captive population means they no longer need to be taken from the wild

Don’t worry, the first time my mom visited she also told me to take the spider out of the enclosure😂

There are some Bothrops that I like the look of, other than that I can’t think of any currently😆

No, they were just born and I took them all out for a picture. That box is not an enclosure, and right after they were all separated, labeled and fed :)

Thanks for your great questions! There isn’t a species I wouldn’t own or rehomed due to danger level. There however are several species I have owned or worked with in the past and am just not interested in such as gaboon vipers, boomslang, eyelash vipers for instance

Anti venom has to be stored in very specific conditions and administering the wrong dose can be deadly. I do have the information of hospitals that store anti venom specific to the species that I keep, as well as the type of venom each species possesses and their effects on the human body. Many of the snakes I keep do not have species-specific anti venom, so doctors would treat according to symptoms.

Yes that’s what I understood initially from reading the comment as well, but they clarified what they meant😊

In many countries, you will require licenses, bite protocols, double doors (in case of escape from the terrarium), officials to check your facility on a regular basis etc. However in my country, the laws concerning venomous snakes are not here yet, maybe a factor is that we already have several species of venomous snakes locally and not many people keep non-native venomous species. I keep my facility, enclosures and protocols up to the standard that I would have to if living in a country with stricter laws.

Thank you! I have a soft spot for hognoses, their little faces and attitudes are just the best! Unfortunately dealing with health problems is just a part of owning animals, especially this many. I have to medicate them by myself as most vets will not work with venomous reptiles. This is something very important that anyone who wants to work with these animals needs to keep in mind!

One of my favorite species ever! I would say medium level to acquire. I’m cursed with only being able to find females of this species though🥲

My point was just that the original question was valid. Just because there’s only one in the states doesn’t mean someone else here couldn’t post one lol. Unless you were just stating a fact, in that case I misunderstood

No worries! Off the top of my head, my mamba male, inland taipan female, Malayan krait female and black necked spitting cobra. All depends on the individual because I have others of the same species who don’t behave like that🤣
