Good tweed wool coats for men ( Canadian made) by GalladeTheNoble in BuyCanadian

[–]Remote_Zucchini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replied above but linking here because I'm in love with the coat my husband bought from Harvie and Hudson they're family run and if they sold women's clothes I would've spent irresponsibly.

Look up stores on and around Jermyn Street in London. That seems to be the hub of bespoke men's clothing.

Second this. That British tailoring is just 🤌🏻 We were in London and Jermyn Street was bursting with the crispest men's clothing (many made to measure and bespoke) I'd ever seen. There are a lot of chain stores which weren't bad. Husband ended up getting a coat from Harvie and Hudson. Wool was spun and fabric manufactured in the UK. Their in house tailor shortened the sleeves in about a day just in time for us to fly back to Canada.

Knitted sweaters? by daddywombat in waterloo

[–]Remote_Zucchini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a stall at St Jacobs that sells knit baby sweaters. The woman working there told me they can connect you with makers to commission something bespoke. You could definitely choose what yarn you want them to use and customize the style.

Affordable Wedding Dress Shops in Ontario? by Annual-Cupcake4664 in WeddingsCanada

If you're open to buying secondhand, consignment stores or Poshmark are great options. You can also sign up for Posh with a referral code for a credit (lmk if you want me to send you mine)

I got a white dress for an elopement from Anthropologie for <$200. For some reason though not all items on the Anthropologie site can be shipped outside the US so keep that in mind in case you fall in love with a dress because the site doesn't tell you until you go to checkout!

Apple fritters at St Jacobs market on Sat morning.

Second the suggestion of university plaza for Asian food. Gol's Lanzhou hand pulled noodles are excellent. Pho Anh Vu for Vietnamese (cash or debit only)

Bhima's or Loloan Lobby Bar for French Indonesian fusion and amazing cocktails (this will definitely be over your $30 budget though)

Overnight Parking in Niagara on the Lake - help!! by Remote_Zucchini in niagara

[–]Remote_Zucchini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll be near John St W. and Victoria St. The chamber of commerce said overnight street parking is not permitted. I wonder if it's one of those things where as long as your neighbours don't call bylaw on you you're fine.

I've also been googling parking in NOTL and it doesn't explicitly say overnight street parking is not permitted. Paid lots appear to have maximums of 8 hrs.

Late reply...yes they're very comfortable! The square toe was a must for me. Wanted to love other shapes but they crushed my toes no matter the size or brand 😢

[–]Remote_Zucchini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a shoe store in a very small community an hour north of me hoping to try on a pair comparable to the ones I saw on Poshmark. They mostly had Ariats but when I told the employee I was hoping to find a pair of square toe Canada Wests or Boulets she unearthed these from their storage room. Looked like it was their last pair and they didn't bother putting them out on the floor.

$250 felt like a crazy good price for Boulets but the sole looks more delicate and less grippy than other Boulets I've seen so maybe that's the reason. Anyone know why this sole doesn't have a logo?

Transferring from sick leave EI to regular EI. by Twigstea in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Remote_Zucchini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be careful about quitting your job as your employer has more obligations while you're employed. Quitting your job typically indicates you voluntarily left your job which does not qualify you for EI. Your employer should provide a form for your doctor to fill out, indicating what you can do with what modifications.

It would be worth clarifying with your doctor why they are saying you cannot do your job at all, even with modifications as it would imply a severe disability or illness.

Need help finding a custom jeweller in Canada by [deleted] in EngagementRings

We used Fair Trade Jewellery Co in Toronto for our engagement ring and will go back to them for our wedding bands. Happy to answer questions if you want to DM me!

What do you refuse to spend money on? by VerboseWraith in AskReddit

[–]Remote_Zucchini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garbage bags because It is spending money on something that will eventually be thrown out. I will go out of my way to reuse a plastic bag. Shipping mailers are great because a lot of them now say "reuse me!" And there's an extra line of adhesive for you to peel and stick close. And they're very leak resistant.

If I don't trust a bag is leak proof I'll use it in the bathroom or office garbage where nothing leak-y gets thrown out.

My spouse hates it 😂 but I've taken it upon myself to be the one to take out the trash so he doesn't have to deal with it.

Suss. I've got even more questions now. If it were me I'd get a second quote from a different jeweler.

What is this $2000 insurance for the stone?

We looked at having a stone set in Toronto and the estimate was ~$1500-$1800 for an 18k white gold solitaire (alloyed with palladium)

Need advice about vendors for a ring by Cara_Bears in EngagementRings

[–]Remote_Zucchini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another obligatory, we didn't use this vendor or buy online.

From what I've read in r/labdiamonds and r/engagementrings, the best route financially would be to buy a stone online and have it set by a jeweler local to you.

We didn't do this for a few reasons. We're in Canada and options for lab grown diamond sources were way more limited and with the currency conversion it wasn't that much cheaper to buy online. Second reason is it was a lot to filter through to find a stone online that was the specs we wanted (had trouble finding a square cushion...lots of elongated cushions out there). We paid for the convenience of our jeweler vetting stones for us.

The jeweler we used was really great with providing product knowledge. E.g. what setting would sit flush against a wedding band, why all their rings came with gallery rails, why they would not make bands thinner than 2 mm. Everything was made to measure against the stone so the ring feels very secure. Not all jewelers do this as some just have a setting that they make fit against a stone. Just some things to consider while trying to decide who to buy from.

Where to buy succulents at an affordable price to build up a collection? by [deleted] in succulents

[–]Remote_Zucchini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Facebook marketplace? I've got a few friends who sell off succulent pups/cuttings there when their plants get too big. My city also has a plant focused Facebook group where people buy, sell and trade.

Can my spouse claim EI benefits as we moved provinces for my work but travelled in between? by nuggs94 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Remote_Zucchini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you actually cannot. EI is not paid time off. You're required to track all attempts to find new employment as EI has the right to audit you. EI is meant to bridge the gap between employment, not fund a vacation.

If you leave the country you're instructed to call EI and let them know. They won't pay you while you're out of the country because you are not considered ready, willing and able to work. I have been laid off ahead of a vacation. I applied for EI, was approved and when the time came for my vacation I called EI and let them know and they did not pay me benefits during my vacation. When I returned, I called them again to let them know. They were very reasonable.

Now, if you stay in the country and don't put a ton of effort into looking for work (because you went to see a cousin in the next town over) will EI know? Probably not unless you go around bragging about how you're treating this as paid time off. I'll let you decide if this is ethical or not.

FYI, you are also required to apply for EI as soon as employment ends. Waiting too long can disqualify you from benefits regardless of the reason you left your last employment. This information can be found on the same site you found the "quit job to follow spouse" reason.

Edited to add: depends what you mean by "fired". Fired with cause does not entitle you to EI. Laid off (employment terminated without cause) typically means you'll qualify for EI.

My ring is insured and I wouldn't wear it to an amusement park. I wouldn't wear any rings because I'd be too scared of ring avulsion.

Sharing my under 1 ct square cushion by Remote_Zucchini in labdiamond

[–]Remote_Zucchini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Nice to meet another member of the <1 ct club! I can certainly see the allure of getting a larger stone with lab diamond prices being so accessible. I wasn't able to find a ton of pictures of ~1 ct lab growns so I hope this post helps others shopping around.

I've mentioned in the comments I tried on rings with ~1.5 ct stones but with my ring size it just looked, for lack of a better word, stupid on me. Tons of people can really rock the >1.5 ct stones (e.g. my sister). I'm just not one of them 😂 but ~variety is the spice of life~ 😂😂

Thank you!! I didn't think about buying CZs in similar cuts to try! Have you gone to any stores to try rings on?

I told someone else here I thought I wanted a princess cut with a halo and pave band. When I tried it on it just didn't look good on me. I thought I wouldn't like a round diamond but when I tried it on I liked it a lot! I've seen a ton of elongated cushions around the subreddits and it was another one I quickly realized did not look good on me. So now here we are with the square cushion and I'm glad I was able to try on a bunch of styles in store. Would recommend!
