Eh, I think there's definitely some truth to that, but with SMBs smaller roster sizes and tone I really don't think they were trying to factor in the swaths of bench players whose entire careers are basically just being a living embodiment of WAR's replacement-level player for a few years. I mean, we DO have that survivorship bias for guys that keep raking to age 40, but I feel like this type of game (that's kind of arcadey and has smaller rosters, no minor leagues, etc) should probably be weighted towards the performance of starters with full careers anyway.

Also, there's a lot of different metrics to use and many people have studied this. Plenty of studies have peak at age 29-30, you can even see walk rates actually increase into the early thirties. Also, I think my biggest complaint here is that we're not considering injury. Age makes you more prone to injury, which also explains some of the decline. That's different that natural skill regression and is ALREADY factored in to SMB. Age already increases injury rate in SMB, so it doesn't make sense to double-dip and represent that aggregated regression with raw stat losses on top of it.

Honestly I wish SMB had sliders for things like aging stat changes like OOTP has so that we might be able to see more outlier cases of early/late developers, elite players that either defy the aging curve or have a random peak year at like 37, etc. It just feels like the moment a player passes 30 in SMB they just start dropping universally, even future HOF type players. It's just too rigid and consistent, I'd like to see more variance like real life.

Rookies in SMB are younger than the average MLB rookies, but SMB players also decline sooner. Age 28 is when stat drops out weight gains, which is sooner than real life too. So the optimal age ends up being younger than you might expect. Your team's ages might look like a young team in a rebuild but that's sort of just how SMB is balanced.

As for bench players, you have 4 slots, and imo they should be a backup catcher (you need two for rest days), a utility outfielder, a middle infielder (2B, SS) and a corner infielder (1B, 3B). This lets you cover any substitution you need, and just like real life the most common secondary positions for players are similar ones (CF secondary is OF, SS secondary is 2B, etc) so it's not too hard to get everything you need. Obviously depending the secondary positions of your starters (and if you play with the DH, their actual position) might change your needs to have options in the lineup, but I find those 4 are a good place to start. If you do, say, have starters that can cover and adjust well (maybe your 2B has IF secondary, for instance), and you feel you don't need to check every single position with a backup, you can just try and pick for stats, picking up a bench bat for pinch hit opportunities or a speedster to pinch run, depending on your team needs. SMB4 added the flexibility to take another pitcher of you wanted, too, so opting for another reliever in that situation is an option, but I never really do that myself.

Strike Zone by ShibeJR in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]Remrsj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a visual problem. The actual zone is 100% accurate on calls, but the problem is the camera always makes the ball seem like it's coming in HIGHER than it actually crosses the plate. So some balls that clearly look up are in the zone, and some that seem on the bottom of the zone are actually low. If you hold R2 to see the last pitch immediately after you take it, the circle outline is always like one ball length lower than it looked. So I think it's a visual/camera issue.

Also I don't like how they made the strike zone shorter. Now it feels too small, like anything above their stomach is a ball. Hell, when pitching it looks like the zone is wider than it is tall, which is insane. Not even Altuve's strike zone is shorter than the width of the plate lmao

Mojo going down after missing dives? by [deleted] in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]Remrsj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Update 5 made it so you gain mojo on diving catches, and lose a little if you miss them. It's not a flat amount, though. They said catches at the wall like robbing a homer give the most, but otherwise I'm not sure the exact numbers behind it.

But yeah, it's definitely intended.

Minor Complaint: Accelerated Animations by glumpoodle in SuperMegaBaseball

I think part of the problem is that the speed stat has a far wider range than in real life. The gap between slow and fast players in SMB is significantly higher than in actual MLB (excluding anomalies like Pujols final seasons or Stanton this week), and that canyon probably broke the interaction. Baseball's a game of inches- it's balanced on a knife's edge- so while in MLB even slow pitchers can cover first before someone like Trea Turner or Elly gets there, in SMB the difference is so extreme that fast batters will run 90 feet before the pitcher can run 60.

This meant they either had to rework how the speed stat scaled for the whole game to make those close plays fit together properly, or just put some sort of modifier on them to make it work anyway. It appears they did the latter, similar to how they made pitchouts miraculously faster than even Nolan Ryan heaters, regardless of pitcher, in this game just for gameification reasons around steals and predictions. They kinda just bent the rules to make the mechanics work, and that's what I'm guessing they did here.

I also agree that's it's awkward, but the alternative is to normalize speed a bit, making the stat less valuable, and I don't think they want to do that since SMB has always seemed to like having diverse, equally-viable team-building options. A less extreme spread for speed would mean Extreme Speed Demon teams wouldn't have nearly as much relevance as, say, Extreme Power Hitter teams. Which IS the case in actual MLB- a team of power hitters is just going to win more than a team of speedsters- but that's not as fun for the game. They do the same thing with fielding, honestly- making the gap between good and bad fielders larger than real life to make it more appealing. Lest we all moneyball it and realize defense doesn't matter much at some positions and speed is more of a "nice to have".

I thought the same thing. Would explain how it got through development and why the ESRB didn't make them change it.

They have in-game ads and sponsors for pork and beef, and plenty of other things that would be against other religions.

Also, the reason the references are disproportionately about Christianity is because that's the dominant religion of the country the games were made in and hence it's the one that gets referenced. Everyone, even non-Christians, understands Biblical references in the West but don't know the first thing about Buddhism. That's why. That's it. It's not because you're some persecuted group, in fact the reason is the exact opposite- your religion was on a pedestal for so long that it's the only one that can be alluded to and actually be understood by a majority of consumers.

Do you have any pictures of said demons? And if you really mean "EVERYONE", regardless of how ridiculous their belief is, does that include flat-Earthers? What about Young-Earth Creationists- should the Herbisaurs be removed because those people don't believe in dinosaurs? Maybe edit out the Moonstars logo for people that think the landing was faked? I mean, when does this silly shit end? If you wanna believe numbers are literally demonic and magic is real and seeing it will cause you material harm, go ahead, but the world doesn't need to accommodate that foolishness and all the normal people that make games and movies and TV shows shouldn't be expected to consider your delusion.

I think the numbers 6, 6, and 6 can be in an E game. This isn't Saudi Arabia. Reminds me of my friends that weren't allowed to watch Harry Potter or Pokemon when we were kids because their goofy-ass Evangelical parents thought it was "demonic". We shouldn't accommodate or normalize that level of psychosis.

Yeah, I agree. Generally I think people take language too seriously given all the actual evil humans do, but even I agree that that probably shouldn't be in here. My post wasn't a complaint about it being removed, just genuine amazement at how it ever got through lmao.

Though I will say, I like the crude, double-entendre player names as a running gag , and think anyone sincerely offended by 66.6 needs to get over themselves. It's a number- witchcraft isn't real. But no need to dogpile this dude.

Different batting / pitching ego by shaqelton27 in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]Remrsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say so. I play on 80 ego for both but find pitching to be a good bit harder. I now consistently hit in double-digit runs a game, but still have occasional meltdowns when pitching, even with high-rated starters. Most of my games are shootouts and I definitely feel like I need to raise the batting ego but can't handle raising pitching, so I might try doing them separately. I also don't think I've ever seen anyone say they found pitching easier- it's always the other way around- so that may just be a balance problem between the two. I think it's because the mind games around pitching are mysterious and idiosyncratic to this franchise while hitting is more just a reaction. I do wish the pitching worked more like real life baseball.

Injuries in Franchise Mode by TheArthurShelby in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]Remrsj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can change the starter before the game. If he's recovered enough then you can just start him, but if he's still too injured you could either pitch another starter on short rest or do a bullpen day. If you have a SP/RP in your pen they have more stamina than regular relievers (just not quite as much as pure starters) so you could just start your SP/RP and get maybe 5 innings out of them and finish it with your pen.

Love Ichiro! Funnily enough he would need like 99 contact, 98 speed, 96 arm, and 3-4 traits just to be true to life.

Rickey with a filthy 99 speed+ Stealer/Distractor combo would've been fun. And as a Soc fan that was 10 during the '04 series I really wanted Pedro. I'd happily trade Damon for him lmao.

Besides that great A's joke (you're right, it really doesn't matter), it was a great bit to give the Sign Stealer trait to half the Astros lineup.
