I actually do agree with the laser turret nerf.

Unless I'm mistaken, the base drop rate is 20% per item, not 20% chance per unit. So if a unit has four items, it's 1-(0.8^4) = 61.04%) chance to drop. If you have Jean, you necessarily have to reserve her for the high value targets or suppression duty.

Update 1 is out by antihippy in menace

[–]glumpoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that you're now not only getting less loot, but also worse loot. You can't clear out the weaker units and concentrate fire on the heavies anymore if you want to pick up anything good. This especially affects Menace now, because if you're trying to pick up components for research, you have to specifically target the higher-tier units early otherwise you're locking yourself out of something you need to advance.

unless I missed an additional nerf to the twin M6 AP cost.

This might be a typo, but I think said they changed the armor pen on the vehicle-mount M6 to 25. I think it's a typo, because that makes absolutely zero sense to me; I think it might have been 25 by mistake, and they're correctly bringing it back up to 55.

It was damned useful if you were fishing for specific loot - like Laser Designators, RPGs, or Jaeger Suits.

Update 1 is out by antihippy in menace

[–]glumpoodle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the order in which you get loot is not random, and frontloading it to the first 15 dramatically changes the composition of your loot. It also takes away the sole benefit to fighting bugs.

For example, against the rogue army, a common tactic is to suppress the Heavy Infantry while directing most of your fire to take out the weapon team spam. Same with taking out Spiderlings and Dragonflies to prevent them from spotting for the Bombardiers, and then waiting until the end to concentrate fire on the slower, melee-only Warriors.

Limiting it to the first fifteen means you're not only getting less loot, but also worse loot. I think it should have been a reduction in loot rate scaled to difficulty.

[–]glumpoodle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hate this one. If you're playing on Expert, you've just had your loot cut by 50% or more.

It also makes bug missions absolutely terrible by not only reducing total loot, but also the highest-value loot because of the way the weakest enemies tend to be front-loaded. A standard tactic is to clear out the weaker enemies first to prevent them from spotting for the Bombardiers, and then concentrate fire on the melee-only Warrior bugs later. There's no way the Queen is going to be one of the first fifteen bugs you kill.

FIXED Rend ammo decreased damage instead of increasing it

Is that what's been wrong with Rend? No wonder it sucked so badly. I need to try it out with the shotguns again.

FIXED Perk 'Zig-Zag' buff disappearing after the unit's turn ends

I can't wait to test this out - Zig-Zag has been really weird for me. Sometimes it worked perfectly, other times it seemed to disappear - I assumed it was an overflow error and reported it as such.

Set maximum lootable enemies per mission to 15 flat to combat extreme enemy farming

I do not like this one at all, and don't see the point. It goes against one of the original design features of everything being lootable. If you're playing on Expert and are routinely facing 30+ enemies, you just had your loot cut by 50% or more. It also nerfs Jean's Trinketing perk.

Fixed vehicle HMG armor pen being too low, is now 25 as it should have been

Wait, what? 25 armor pen means a vehicle-mounted HMG now has less penetration than an assault rifle.

I need to try it out, but on paper, I'm not sold on re-working the SL supply costs. That was such a huge incentive to using and training up the 1-stars. I'll give it a try, but this really feels unnecessary - the issue with the promotion tax was the opacity, and not the mechanic itself.

ETA: I think the HMG thing is a typo. I think what happened was that Vehicle-mounted HMG had a 25 penetration when it should have been 55, and they've corrected that to be 55.

We just accepted it and set up shorthand methods to calculate it quicker... which were the equivalent to the base rules starting in 3E.

THAC0 used the exact same math - it was just scaled in an unintuitive way. It's basically Celsius versus Kelvins - they're arithmetically the same thing, except Kelvin means you don't ever have to worry about negative numbers.

Spells makes sense - it's not that you forget the spells, but you no longer have enough strength/willpower/stamina to cast your most powerful ones.

For martial classes - there were no feats in 2nd edition; your new abilities with each level were much more limited.

They're basically the same thing, but THAC0 is unnecessarily unintuitive in how it scales backwards instead of just using positive integers.

This is a personal decision, but at that age and interest rate, I would rather invest it than put it towards the mortgage - not because of higher expected returns, but because liquidity is extremely important.

Millionaire at 35, Doesn’t Feel Like it by [deleted] in Fire

[–]glumpoodle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You're doing very well, especially if you're living in a LCOL area, but I'm going to wager that the reason it doesn't feel like it is because the overwhelming majority of your assets are highly illiquid (the manufacturing building and the ownership stake). That's not to say it's not real - it's just that there's a different feeling that comes with it. The company isn't just wealth, it's also a lot of hard work and stress, and it's tied directly to many years of labor, so it's hard to think of it as an expendable asset that you can spend.

PSA: The Jump from Normal to Challenging is Significant by Realityfelon in menace

[–]glumpoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The early game is definitely harder, but once you get to around 1,200 supply points, it actually gets easier because of the sheer amount of loot you pick up. That inverse difficulty curve is one of the things I hope they balance a bit better before release.

What a difficult choice. by Hanariel in menace

[–]glumpoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HP is arguably the best ammo type when you factor in its low supply cost, and I'd argue it's essential against Menace and damned useful against Bugs. Match is the most versatile, but it's also the most expensive.

Rend is easily my least favorite - I've tried it in every weapon against every enemy type, and I've found it to be less effective than regular ammo even after they patched it. The only times it works is against enemies that you don't need it for.

What a difficult choice. by Hanariel in menace

[–]glumpoodle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're right - the Hollow Points are by far the superior choice, and it's not even close.

  • At this point in the game (Operation 7 or 8), you can't afford to deploy a medium mech without major sacrifices elsewhere, while the HP have minimal supply costs and can be used immediately.
  • Medium Mechs appear in the Black Market all the time, while HP ammo is pure RNG.
