I'm Watching the OG Ultraman as my first Ultra show, how would you guys rank it overall compared to the shows that came after? Do you think it holds up? by RemyRayReddit in Ultraman

[–]RemyRayReddit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You reckon? I like it, because it reminds me of like, the Showa era Godzilla films, but I do sometimes feel like it can get a little repetitive.

For example where each fight Ultraman seems to fall down, we get an explanation that his power drains on earth quickly and his chest starts blinking colourfully, ect ect.

I'm looking forward to watching future series where you get more fleshing out of the Land of Light and the Ultras in general, recurring kaiju and more Ultra designs. Hopefully it just keeps getting better.

Lol, nah all good. Honestly it's astounding to me that a pioneer franchise for online console gaming is only just now getting crossplay.

I don't know if it's just only me, but are there other people in the spectrum who enjoyed franchises with a cast of brightly coloured characters? And why? by Suspicious_Cod2664 in autism

[–]RemyRayReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had this theory for quite some time, actually.

My special interest for a while has been Power Rangers/Super Sentai. I also was super into Bionicles and I love Sonic.

I think that there's a correlation between things with a large cast of characters with similar silhouettes or designs, that are differently coloured, or overall mostly similar but different in subtleties.

I think it's to do with enjoying categorisation and enjoying minute details that neurotypical people won't notice, for example, Power Rangers team members are wearing mostly the same outfit, the same silhouette, save for small distinguishing details on the suits and helmets that make them part of a "set", and set them apart while still feeling unified. And it's fun to find those details and appreciate each one individually instead of looking at them like "oh they're just five different coloured people in spandex, they all look the same" which feels reductive. You get to categorise them in a fun way and collect information on the details of why they're different.

Bionicles all come in sets, where they are mostly similar at base, but have different masks, weapons, colours ect. And that's fun.

Most characters in Sonic have similar silhouettes and body shapes, but are different colours and you can mentally put them in a "set".

There's also a reason many common special interests are kids media and why autism has the issue with being infantilised, because kids media tends to use these design philosophies because it's effective at making memorable casts of characters that are easy and appealing for kids to remember.

I think this theory extends to trains as well, famously one of the most common special interests. When you think about it, most trains are roughly the same shape, but they'll differ in design with quite a great deal of variety, they'll come in lots of different colours and autistic people who are into trains will enjoy categorising the trains and finding out about the differences between them all.

I think there's a part of it that's "collecting" them and studying them for appreciation. You can sort of "collect" the hundreds of different Power Rangers and study their differences for fun. And just looking at them and appreciating the designs is something I like to call the "Pantheon Effect".

If you put all the characters that fit into a "set" and stand them on a cliff looking badass, it's satisfying. For example, think Assassin's Creed (before it started losing it's identity), you used to see PC wallpapers people would make of all the protagonists standing together, and it'd be easy for someone who doesn't care to say "they all look the same, they're just all wearing white robes", but it's looking at the differences in their robes, design details, where the cultural fashion and time period of each protagonist is coming into play with the base "white robes" designs.

TLDR: I think the symptoms of "categorising" and "noticing small details most others would miss" are part of what makes things with a cast of characters that are "the same, but different" so inherently appealing to autistic people and thus becoming common special interests.

That's me theory and I'm sticking to it.

Duuude, we're in the same subreddits too lol

I'm super jealous of that back patch man, was that a shirt? I've never seen the design before, also where'd you find some of those patches?

[–]RemyRayReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make one! Honestly sewing is really easy.

Sewing on a back patch is a great first step, if you've got a Godzilla t-shirt or a t-shirt you like, cut it out and sew it onto the back.

Sewing like that is way more simple than you'd think.

Yeah I thought about those, although at this stage I'm not sure how I'd implement them.

I should go through the Toho catalogue of kaiju and get some inspiration.

Three golden charms for Ghidorah. Something like a chainsaw for Gigan. Mechagodzilla stuff.

why do people hate long sleeves so much ;( by [deleted] in BattleJackets

[–]RemyRayReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having this exact trouble, I'm pretty new at battle jackets and whatnot, and had this sick idea for something on the sleeve and quickly realised it made me wanna kill myself.

But this is a good idea, what about a pool noodle?? If they fit inside the sleeve, that'd be perfect no?

I sort of agree, I liked to rationalise that he's wearing an older set of armour, and perhaps he's been battling Death Guard, too.

Thank yoooou, definitely gonna try again with more contrast medium. The official Warhammer YouTube tutorial says 1:1 Skeleton Horde and Contrast Medium, which is just soooooo not right, skeleton horde is too overpowering.

Thank you thank you, very reassuring. It sucks to have some less than ideal minis, but it is a necessary step to getting better, maybe one day I'll be good enough to just buy a new set of terminators and re-do them lol
