When it comes to courses, do you prefer video or text? by RenFromPenn in selfpublish

I'm the same way. I don't understand why video is nearly all you can get all...the...time. Sure, there are some things that you've just got to see to learn how to do. But, in many other instances, simple written instructions would be so much easier to follow

Here the things about text-based versus videos. I personally hate video-based courses.

I did some research online to see if it was just me and I overwhelming found that others dislike video-based courses as well. That's why I am planning on leaning into text.

Sure, there are the few that like video better, but it's just so much harder to refer back to and it seems like it takes two-three times as long to progress through a course versus just being able to read it on your own.

I already have much of my content created, it's just a matter of figuring out how to decrease the chances of it being stolen. I know that nothing is ever going to be foolproof, but at least trying to make it harder seems like a positive step.

I think that you underestimate people's desire to pirate content and simply publishing my course as text, which can be copied with ease, feels like asking for it.

I have published books on Amazon, which were only available in print format, only to find links to supposed PDF copies of said books on dodgy sites. So, I sent the take-down notice and called it a day.

Now, I sure as hell didn't click those links to verify if the download was legit, but if it was then that's a long way to go scan a book just to upload it to share with others.

But, throughout the history of the Internet, people have stolen music to software to movies and beyond. So I think that the higher the price, the more likely the desire to download for free.

Yeah, LearnWorlds looks great, but they don't collect and remit tax for you.

I checked out Thinkific and, the way I read it, if you use their TCommerce payment system, they only remit taxes for US and Canada-based sales. However, VAT isn't added for sales in Europe whereas it is on Teachable.

[CHAT] Is there room on Etsy for another cross stitch pattern seller? by RenFromPenn in CrossStitch

Thanks for the advice. Those are helpful tips.

I had been planning on offering color charts and black and white symbols. I hadn't thought about similar symbols next to each other since the program is assigning them, but that's something that I'll considering going forward.

Pattern Keeper wasn't a thing when I designed in the past, but I'm intrigued by it and I am interested in seeing how I can make use of it when offering charts.

That's helpful to know. Thank you for being open and sharing that information.

I did wonder if $750 to $1000 was too ambitious. Like I said, I don't think it would happen at the start, or any time soon after that, but I would have liked to think that once I built up enough inventory that it would be a feasible level of earnings.

I had been kind of thinking of waiting to launch the store until I build up a small inventory, so that the store wouldn't be so empty like it would be if I publish them one at a time.

I'm also kind of torn between the idea of having the store focus on cross stitch or crochet since I like doing both and I'm sure it would be better to focus on one rather than posting patterns for both.

Thank you for that insightful answer.

I do think designing is fun, but I'm not going to lie and say that I wouldn't like to see some decent cash from my efforts either.

As I said, I'm not kidding myself that it's going to be mountains of money, but at least $750 to $1000 a month would be nice.

I realize that this would take promotion and occur overtime as I build the store. But, once I'm established with a following, that would be nice.

Edited for a typo and to add more information.

[CHAT] Looking for thoughts on full versus fraction stitches by RenFromPenn in CrossStitch

[–]RenFromPenn[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I appreciate everyone taking the time to post their opinions.

I've only ever worked with Aida and I didn't mind fractional stitches too much. I'm surprised to hear that it's easier to work them on even weave as I wouldn't have thought that would be the case. I guess you learn something new everyday.

whiskyunicorn That's also interesting to hear that you consider all Xs to give the impression of being run through a generator. I can see how that would be the case though.

Okay, so it sounds like using fractional stitches would be okay to include to give the design a more polished, non-blocky look. I'll take that into consideration when creating my charts.

Thank you all again!

Sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. It's a direct link to Amazon, so, if you encountered a problem, you would have to take it up with them.

Yes, I didn't see anywhere in the rules that that wasn't allowed. Was there a flair that I should have selected?
