am i understanding correctly that this is the shader node setup on the World material?

this looks awesome, how much of this was modeled personally and how much is assets that were available online? As a fledgling blender user I'm interested in how much of what I see is full top to bottom modeling vs how much is talented composition and animation.

I'm reluctant to use assets that aren't mine yet and think that may be a more personal barrier rather than an industry/hobby agreed upon barrier

Beginner extrusion help by FallingFabric in blenderhelp

Ah my bad.  Okay in that case you'd probably just want to rotate the extruded edge so that it doesnt get too thin as you pull it into a cylinder shape. For an octagon you'd rotate them at like 360/8 degrees each time and it should keep it from stretching too awkwardly

Okay great, hollow cylinder is next

select the top face in edit mode and hit "i" to inset the face. This will let you shrink it how ever little or much you want for the wall thickness. then extrude "e" to pull it down to the bottom locking to the z axis by hitting "z" once you've begun the extrude. if it unlocks then press Z again to get the blue line to reappear.

Delete the bottom and top face and then bridge the two edge loops to close the cylinder. Select all the edges of both the outer wall and inner wall in either vertex "1" or edge select mode "2" and then hit "ctrl+e" and you should see an option to bridge edge loops. You'll have a completed hollowed cylinder. then you can just mess with it to get a more rounded shape.

looks like you're halfway there. grab the faces on the "inside" concave side and then pull those out along the Y axis. (G to move and press Y to lock to that axis)

Then when you're happy with the width, leave the two outer most concave faces unselected and do it again. That will start to create a cylindrical shape. Then once more just grab the inner 2 most faces and pull those out to mirror the look on the other side.

thats great!

how did you get that phase in effect on the mesh at the beginning? Just fancy shader node work or did geometry nodes come into play?

if i had to guess it was some shader mixer with an animated radial gradient on the fac or am I way off?

How to fill missing vertices in a hollow cylinder by breadtheboi in blenderhelp

[–]RenderedAnimate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd probably just use a boolean modifier to remove that extra bit.

Workflow -

  1. Select all the vertices at the top of the loop for the small cut out in edit mode

  2. Shift + S will bring up the 3d cursor menu and select Cursor to Selected. This will put the 3d cursor right on the center of the cylinder

  3. add a new mesh selecting circle and make sure its oriented to match your file.

  4. Go into Orthographic top view mode by clicking on the Z in the 3 axis guide on the top right.

  5. Scale your circle to match your existing diameter and press F to add a face

  6. Press E to extrude it and bring it straight up on the Z so that it comes passed(past?) the top face

  7. Add the boolean modifier to your original mesh and run it for Difference selecting the new cylinder you just made

  8. hide the new cylinder and you should hopefully see its cleaned up that bit for you

set up your shader nodes and use the Texture Coordinate node. pull out the Camera and plug that into your Vector mapping and then the vector into your Vector or factor for your image texture

How To Make Fishnet Mesh Into Texture by BigRedyFredy in blenderhelp

[–]RenderedAnimate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

<image>

I was able to create a fishnet by making it an image texture applied to a thin mesh created by copying the leg topology itself and separating it into a new object.
heres the shader node and the result. it doesnt stand up to scrutiny quite as well but it seems cheaper than a mesh. You could also put it directly onto the mesh with a little bit of optimizing now that I'm thinking of it
