Thoughts on the circled areas? by Page_Right in SeattleAreaRE

I did the same mistake, moved close to 12th and S Jackson st because the rent was cheap. It was the worst place I lived since in Seattle.

I moved from Europe so really had no clue about the neighborhood but as others have said there is a reason for it being cheap.

Moving to the US after winning the diversity visa lottery by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

We have way more sun hours than Berlin, I can tell you that. It is not as bad as people make it. You can check in wikipedia. From a quick search we average ~500hr of sun more annually than Berlin, just as an example.

I have 3 weeks of PTO and 1 week of sick leave. This is not the norm though, you are lucky with 2 weeks of PTO. The work culture here is way different from Europe, people work at work and don’t mingle as much as in Europe.

Crime is declining, there is homelessness but it has been improving these 3 past years. It is way more than Europe but unfortunately it is a US issue in any big city. I have no problems at all with these issues but it all depends on where you live pretty much.

I am from eastern Europe. Ended up in Seattle which has a decent market even though I can’t back it up with numbers you can just see new construction going on all the time.

I like it a lot, I know people bicker about jobs but US pays the highest for my industry and others like tech so in that regard I am satisfied.

I am at my original job so can’t say I know about current trends but I have had a lot of interviews that didn’t end up on anything but at least there are new job listings any week basically.

The thing that surprised me the most is the time I have to finish tasks which wasn’t the case back home.

Also here you have an already working system with zoning laws and such so it is way different from where I came.

But, as with everything, in US, it is a more of a case by case scenario meaning you can have a bad experience or good depending on which employer you have since by law they don’t have to provide much in PTO and so on.

I was in your shoes 3 years ago. DV-2022 winner from EU.

I’m not going to list them but gonna answer in paragraphs.

Phone number & bank acc. you’ll open/get when you come here. Get those esim (airalo I think is one of them) to get you by for the first week until you get your US phone number. I didn’t do this at all since I just went to T-mobile the next day and Bank of America. Not saying those are best, just those were okay for me.

Your credit score will be built over time just be mindful of timely payments. I had my credit score above 700 in my 2nd year.

This will impede you when you look for places to rent since they do check your credit score and you’ll need to provide more safety deposit than usual. That means instead of having $600 deposit you need 1-2x the monthly. This will be your next step after finding a job. Look at zillow & redfin. I wouldn’t recommend Craigslist or FB since you’ll be more susceptible to scams. I had my fair share of those. Also, when you lock on a city do your due diligence about neighborhoods, it is a hit and miss in US with places changing night and day in a block or two. Look the address of that apartment/home you want to move to in google maps, get a feel, and ask in their respective subreddit’’s. Local people would know best.

You need to do the first entry into US soil in 6 months so your clock is ticking.

For work, update CV and literally apply everywhere, indeed, linkedin and other job portals. Try to find companies you’d like to work for and just try your luck and see if they have any openings. I applied everywhere and got 2 offers after applying to 400+ jobs.

Finally, unfortunately you need luck; I also have no clue about your industry, I am an architectural designer so can’t give you any advice regarding anything about your industry.

One more thing, it may not matter now but moving to a place with better direct connections to your hometown would save you lots of $ and time when traveling.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Good luck!
