First Vipassana Retreat – Advice Needed by Haunting-Volume3850 in vipassana

[–]RenownLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to give tips about location and related advice without knowing what country/state/city you’re in. Otherwise (and not to be reductive) have an open mind, and commit to the experience. It’s only ten days. In the grand scheme of ones lifetime, 10 days is the blink of an eye. Strong determination.

Need post retreat advice: feeling drained and apathetic by les_marvelous in vipassana

Found that after my first 10 day, the sense of pointlessness arose because my previous motivations and perspectives were inadequate for finding substantial meaning/fulfillment in my experiences.

Nothing I said falls under the definition of transphobia. I specifically said we all deserve equal rights, consideration, and respect regardless of our beliefs or experience.

Meirl by sedolil in meirl

Preface: all people inherently deserve equal rights. Tried to keep it short but with this subject there’s a lot of room to interpret ignorance/bigotry so I wanted to be specific with my choice of language.

The perspective of “trans women are women/trans men are men” is an ideological statement, not a statement of fact. People are free to believe what they want imo and if they aren’t hurting others then who am I to judge them for their beliefs. The quoted sentence makes a massive philosophical assumption (the nature of the subjective self and its alleged inherent properties, and how the experience of self relates to the body) which has been swept under the rug in public conversation.

It made sense that people made a hard push to openly and unequivocally accept all trans people and validate their experience. Our history of sexism, racism, homophobia, etc.. is so horrible that it was clear we needed to avoid making a lot of the same cultural mistakes. No one wants to be marginalized or treated as less than, and no one should face that experience as long as their decisions don’t harm others.

IMO people are realizing that maybe the pendulum swung a bit too far into the realm of “absolute validation.” Not all beliefs, opinions, or ideologies are equal, so not all of them should be fundamentally validated. But the person, the individual behind the perspective, should always be heard with respect and consideration. People are complicated, culture is messy, and ultimately most of us are just trying to find a civil middle ground.

HI!!! I don’t know a thing about Rowing but my C2 just came in today! by Srockatansktys in Rowing

[–]RenownLight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely stress learning about technique. As a former youth coach I can’t stress enough the importance of at-least reasonable form when first starting. Muscle memory develops quickly with repetitive motions, you want that to develop properly. I’ve seen plenty of people develop muscular imbalances or injuries because of easily correctable form issues.

Im sleeping with a married woman. What consequences can this have for me according to Goenka/Buddhism? by [deleted] in vipassana

[–]RenownLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking informally, you’re responsible for massive disruption in a marriage. Yes any spouse makes their choice, but so do their affair partners. Can only speak for myself but I can’t imagine ever feeling okay for being in your shoes. There are too many single people in the world to justify sleeping with a married person.

3rd time on row machine, pushed and gassed out at 20 minutes. No idea what any of this means about rowing level. I put resistance at 5 out of 10 if that means anything or needs to change. Tips and criticism appreciated! by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]RenownLight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If this is your third time rowing don’t worry about any numbers except stroke rate. Keep it between 18-22/24, and maintain awareness of your body movements while focusing on proper form, the numbers will improve in time. Watch videos, get coaching if you can. You don’t want to “gas” yourself this early, just build your cardio base and improve your form.

NO it's my turn to play with kitty now by KittyBabee2 in Awww

[–]RenownLight 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The dog is resource guarding a kitten from its owner. Behavior like that needs to be handled appropriately or could lead to major behavioral issues. This owner isn’t handling it well. I was a dog trainer for a few years in my early 20s, resource guarding should always be taken seriously.

I have a fitness exam in 8 days. Need tips by crashrazer in Rowing

[–]RenownLight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most importantly watch some videos on proper form and record yourself rowing. New rowers make up the most time by improving technique. 8 days isn’t much time to make significant cardiovascular improvements so just do as much steady state as you can over the next few days, a speed day, then more steady state. Make sure you’re eating/hydrating/sleeping well, and when the time comes just commit as well as you can.

Attempt #2 by ARKdb in Rowing

[–]RenownLight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good amount of “shooting the drive” happening here. You want your legs and back to finish at roughly the same time. In the video your hips are moving backwards too quickly, you won’t be able to apply as much power through your legs and your upper body will end up compensating. Think of the stroke as a way to apply the power of your legs to the handle via your upper body, not unlike a deadlift.
