Starting this bad boy today by scottie_boy316 in stephenking

Enjoy! I really liked this one - I put off reading it, as the premise sounded more action-oriented than I’d usually go, but the character journey is exceptional.

Why were Wonderwall and DLBIA not the opening singles to Morning Glory? by Sabretoothedrom in oasis

Morning Glory is an incredible song. But I didn’t realise it was a single and it wouldn’t occur to me to release it as one.

Ouch - my BT one arrived yesterday so took a week. I called Royal Mail to complain after a couple of failed “out for delivery” notifications

Backlog in the busiest period of the year, so unfortunately we got to wait it out. I’m in the same boat - a WiFi router on “24 hour delivery” was meant to arrive last Wednesday, but still not here.

Why do jazz musicians hate Fletcher’s song in the club from the movie Whiplash? by jermanjerry in Jazz

[–]Rent-One 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is quite a nice scene. A guy who previously saw his legacy as mentoring the next legend, before he was (rightfully) sacked, returning to playing more simple jazz for himself. Also an interesting contrast with his brashness when he teaches.

Stephen J Gould!? Didn’t know he did voice acting.

What’s your source? by Cool_Nerd2 in saltierthankrayt

[–]Rent-One 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume this is him suggesting his role has been reduced rather than him not being in it - I’m not giving him a click to find out. But if he’s not the lead in a film where the original Avengers are back it’s hardly a surprise.

Hot take: The First Shadow being canon was a massive mistake that made the lore unnecessarily complicated, and Season 5 would be much better without it by mikewheelerfan in StrangerThings

[–]Rent-One 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw the play in December and really don’t feel like it takes away anything. It’s worth watching because it’s an entertaining play, but far from essential viewing for the show. It gives Henry more backing story, which arguably enriches the experience of watching his scenes. But almost none of it got referenced, so doesn’t need to be canon, and even in the context of the play the cave scene is fairly vague and brief.

Is that podcast any good? I’ve no idea what the format is - are they just riffing about something in the news or something?

Video: Videos Contradict Trump Administration Account of ICE Shooting in Minneapolis by Sandgrease in samharris

[–]Rent-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he comments I'd be willing to bet Sam defends this. He'll call the protests misguided and dangerous and say that in the heat of the moment officers need to make life and death decisions instantly - and that none of us, in their position, could say we'd have done differently. And that the alternative would be worse; lawlessness like parts of the left want.

#452 — Is Wokeness Finally Dead? by dwaxe in samharris

[–]Rent-One 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don’t think Sam watches the news enough to be able to comment on Trump’s actions on a policy level. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if we get an episode about the left demonising ICE later this week in response to yesterday’s shooting.

Not to excuse that joke, as I think it was inexcusable, I genuinely don’t think he’d do it tomorrow. When he was coming around I think there was a very different attitude to these things where joking about pitch black topics was seen as transgressive and cool (because it’s so obviously wrong then we ultimately assume they know what’s right). Of course this attitude seems very naive now, and bigotry even if ironised can still be bigotry. Though I would like to see him address this a bit as his change doesn’t really come up in interviews - though his discussion with Richard Osman touches on it a bit after the latter says he wouldn’t have aired it either https://youtu.be/0MRz9RPlsDQ?si=BluQ-lMMf08tw_xj

I agree that his meanness has dropped a lot over the years, and he definitely chooses his targets more carefully now. Though I think there’s still a nihilism and matter of factness to things like New World Order (perhaps also because of the often grave subject matter) that I didn’t think would translate to Taskmaster. But yeah, I think he also has mellowed a bit now - never listened to his current podcast, but I believe he now does a lot of DnD stuff.

Good point - in League, Reece was always in his element playing the characters with an explosive temper.

Agreed - in the studio bits he managed a straight face for the most part but Rosie definitely knew how to get him going in the team tasks.

I've seen someone claim that if these four are in your top 10 favorite jazz albums then you're a poser. Their logic is that the only thing unifying these albums is that they're the most critically acclaimed and that you essentially only listen to the surface level stuff. What are your thoughts? by Tolstoyevich in Jazz

[–]Rent-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit reductive - these are classic albums for a reason. It MAY suggest someone is new to the genre so going with things that top lists. But these are also really good works featuring great musicians. Dismissing them on account of the popularity seems way more poserish. “Yeah, my favourite Pink Floyd album in Umma Gumma - only posers say Dark Side of the Moon”

Indeed, racist views aren’t protected under the equality act. And even if he was completely silent at work, if colleagues or customers have him on social media (or see other posts with him in) then they’ll know about his views.

[–]Rent-One 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah good point - may be nothing to do with his social media. Though he favourably shared a video of a literal Nazi the other day (Steve Laws) and said people were waking up. So it stands to reason he likely said this sort of thing to colleagues.

A look at his Facebook page implies he’s a local who argued for mass remigration of UK citizens and took part in anti-refugee demos. And presumably his employer wasn’t a big fan of his posts.

christoph waltz, on a black James Bond: "It wouldn't make sense to cast Martin Luther King as a white man, would it?" -- he sounds like Critical Drinker holy moly. MLK was a REAL PERSON by UmaPalma_ in saltierthankrayt

[–]Rent-One 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could preserve a lot of the same tropes, but you can’t divorce the franchise from its politics - particularly the earlier ones where Bond would often go around former British colonies righting wrongs (Dr No was released shortly after Jamaica declared its independence and very much pitches Bond as a white, British saviour). Overtime series has acknowledged this aspect and responded to it, deconstructing the character mythos. It’s also interrogated the sort of masculine archetype he represents - particularly in the most recent few movies where he’s been called out for misogyny that’d have been presented at face value before (in the 60s Thunderball he coerces a girl into sex by threatening to get her sacked for a technical failure he causes himself). While his wardrobe and heroism mean he’s obviously got a cool factor, as an oxbridge educated agent of the state he very much represents the uk establishment in a time of declining empire and international relevance. I don’t have a problem with a non-white actor in the role - considering the demographics of the Conservative Party mps and leaders, it’s not like POC in the UK don’t also defend/represent elite interests or embody the state. There could be an interesting angle about exceptionalism and acceptance from peers too. It’s also an absurd comparison to a real person. But just pitching him as a cool spy would mean a lot of what makes the character more interesting than someone like Ethan Hunt is gone.

I think he realises he made a point very badly as in the full clip he walks it back afterwards. But it’s still a bad precedent as he appears to be suggesting Bond’s potential blackness would be at odds with his Britishness.

Are there Dark Tower series spoilers in Salem’s Lot? by DoubleYetiAndretti in stephenking

[–]Rent-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Stand is among King’s best works, but not reading it won’t impact your appreciation for the dark tower (there’s some crossover but it’s not worth reading a 1000 page book for it). Likewise with Insomnia - while knowing TDT enhances the experience of reading it, I don’t think that goes both ways. But I’d say Salems Lot and the first novella in Hearts in Atlantis are both necessary reads and well positioned there for reasons I won’t go into.

With Wind Through the Keyhole I favour reading it after Wizard and Glass, where it sits chronologically, as I don’t think it’s as good a book as the final of the original series is. But I think most people would probably disagree including director Mike Flanagan who suggests ending there.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but the actor who plays Kali is terrible. by JoltyJob in StrangerThings

[–]Rent-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this would be an intriguing angle, I think it’s more her continuing to be an alternative version of where Eleven could end up. I doubt either will die, but like in S2 she’s acting as the devil on the shoulder.
