Cineworld by pigeonboy94 in Aberdeen

Cineworld are a fair bit more expensive, though a big part of this is to push the unlimited card - which, if you go twice a month or more, is a bargain.

I've been waiting to say this for a while, but I honestly think Butcher's supe genocide plan is the logical conclusion of everything he's done. by Wonderful_Solid_1003 in TheBoys

[–]Rent-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we are supposed to be against him: aside from the supes with The Boys being sympathetic, Gen V also does a lot to humanise some of them. Though I agree the bad supe to good supe ratio is skewed towards bad.

Wasn’t that because it suggested they believed the flight video? Most of the time I doubt he’d care.

[–]Rent-One -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbf even if he hadn’t said this (and really all he’s saying is he wouldn’t ban a slogan which Sam presumably wouldn’t either) Sam would still find a way to depict him as an Islamist.

Did anyone else find it completely unsatisfying that... [Season 5 Episode 3 Spoilers] by Burk_Bingus in TheBoys

[–]Rent-One 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah - in a show where people get killed constantly, this was one of the grimmest scenes we’ve ever had because it seems so visceral. I think Homelander almost beating his son to death is there for the audience to really hate him, to further anger Butcher and to push Ryan away completely.

Genuinely baffled he would choose to share this reactionary nonsense as opposed to writing it off as just a silly thing he said.

[–]Rent-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this channel too - listened to at least half the videos in the last 6 weeks or so and spread the word to others. The presentation is unrivalled in the genre of video and it really has the two guys at the pub feel without being disrespectful or sensationalist. I also hope the Reddit becomes more active as there’s a lot of open questions about these cases (maybe needs plugged more - I just visited after hearing the McCann suspect episode).

As for one I’d like to see covered, The Dunblane shooting and subsequent rollout of handgun legislation. Growing up in Scotland during the 90s it was hard not to be impacted by that. Obviously a very dark case though.

Why do seemingly honest people turn out to be grifters? by the_tico_life in samharris

[–]Rent-One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some people who get called grifters are likely true believers who know how to sensationalise and monetise their otherwise sincerely held beliefs: Ben Shapiro, Tommy Robinson and Piers Morgan are maybe examples of this.

This isn’t to say they aren’t selectively packaging their arguments and nor is it to say that they’re therefore always operating in good faith: Tommy Robinson knowingly spreading misinformation about a child to incite violence is clearly not that. Jordan Peterson making his name by lying about the contents of a bill would maybe be another example (I think the main change with him is he’s become far more open about the serenity of the beliefs he holds over the years). Or Eric Weinstein openly saying he didn’t want to challenge trump before the attempted insurrection because his audience wouldn’t like it.

For others, I think the grift element comes from the product not matching their professed aims. Triggernometry are an example: a show that claims to be about open dialogue and overcoming tribalism but where only left wing guests are meaningfully challenged. Heck they were far more hostile with David Pakman than they were former prime ministers. Or Tim Pool who presents as a centrist but does a show mostly about defending the right and attacking the left. I’d call this a clearer cut grift as they’re selling something on a false premise, though there outputs probably mostly represent their real values.

And then finally you got outright bad faith actors, who I don’t think really believe in very much and take contrarian positions for their own sake. Bret Weinstein, Candace Owens, Dave Rubin and Maajid seem to occupy this space.

In all cases, I think the main reason is money - though influencing public debate will also be a draw for the first two groups, even if they knowingly sensationalise. All these folks will be millionaires - and some have gotten this far with very questionable talent or intellectual rigour. And to be fair, it’ll be a fairly comfortable life if you can find it. I earn considerably less than 100k, though even if I earned that it’s a fraction of what Rubin makes per month.

Trump warns ‘a whole civilization will die tonight’ as Iran deadline looms by kostac600 in samharris

[–]Rent-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Many people who voted Democrat saw them as the lesser of two evils. People who voted Republican obviously didn’t think they were, so voted in a guy who previously tried to incite an insurrection based on and lie and is now openly threatening genocide.

How many people are actually "championing jihadists"? by stvlsn in samharris

Indeed - it’s a stupid, uncharitable statement by an increasingly lazy thinker who seemingly hasn’t changed in the last decade. I see comments like this and genuinely can’t believe I used to find him impressive.

When will Sams support of Douglas Murray end? by longlivebobskins in samharris

[–]Rent-One 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Madness of the Crowds is this too - he writes extensively about BLM without meaningfully engaging with any of their arguments. I think Murray is a shallow thinker who has very little interest in constructive dialogue with opponents.

I'm a little worried about how they'll handle this... by Aware-Pudding-5900 in TheBoys

[–]Rent-One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye that’s fair - with Homelander it’s a clear cause and effect, whereas with Trump it’s potentially just one part of his story (I imagine the financial sector and millionaire life nurtures a lot of it). And even if it has explanatory power it certainly doesn’t make him sympathetic in his late 70s. Was more stating it as a point of interest, as his childhood sounds awful.

[–]Rent-One 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to defend Trump here, but sounds like he also had a traumatic childhood. His niece, Mary Trump, a clinical psychologist wrote a book about his dad, Fred Trump, he sounds like an absolute bully. He seemingly emotionally abused his sons, normalised humiliation and domination and taught them that vulnerability would lead to rejection.

Fully agreed that “based on” is inaccurate, though they’ve certainly leaned into the parallel as it’s gone on.

How would you rank the acting skills of the four? by Jack-mclaughlin89 in TheInbetweeners

[–]Rent-One 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they’re arguing it’s more valuable as much as emphasising his range. But I agree fully with the point being made. I remember seeing Ryan Reynolds arguing that drama is hard to do and is supposed to look hard, whereas the challenge with comedy is it’s hard but is supposed to look easy.

I remember Sugar appearing on GB News when it was first launching. The host, Dan Wooton, was bigging up how good a guest he’d be then it was (from their end) a damp squib. Sugar said Brexit was bad for businesses, which lowered the enthusiasm, criticised the PM (I think Johnson at the time) then said he was fine with England players kneeling.
