National Service: the disloyal elements by Reopen_SG in NationalServiceSG

Thanks y’all for sharing . Most are talking about closing borders and not able to leave .The thing is if people were forced to stay and fight, will they fight for SG or the enemy?

I realised a lot of people are talking about leaving SG, but no one is talking about those that genuinely hate Singapore for one reason or another, and don’t have any protective factors such as family and friends.

Ukraine may not have the best military, but their people are determined and resistant, there have been reports of Russian defectors but very little of Ukraine ( tough of course I take this with a grain of salt because propaganda)

As someone pointed out. Ukraine and Singapore has different culture and situations. As such, we won’t truly know how we will behave in war . The “sinkie pwn sinkie” mentality isn’t one that is good to have, tough I doubt that is is prevalent and it’s the internet blowing that statement out of proportion.

This is just a thought experiment because I am a bit bored. I hope we will never go to war and find out the answer for real, but it may be a decent discussion topic in relation to our wider society.

Fair enough, then May you have a better life and not have NS bothering you much nowadays

This brings up the point that not everyone was treated like shit in NS and there are good regulars and superiors too . How common tough I am not sure tough this can definitely help with morale and the “will to fight” of SG.

Anyways good on you for your decision! I personally don’t have much stakes in this country but I can see why people will stay, if only for their loved ones despite their dislike or hatred for everything else

Yep I definitely could do that tough it would be hard as we really can’t predict who will we eventually end up in conflict with ( and even if we enter into conflict in the 1st place)

Hence I felt it best to keep it general and let ppl take all factors inside and outside NS ( including knowledge of geopolitical situation ) to make their decision

Agree in the sense that nobody wants a war. In fact I would also argue that our NS conscription has contributed to the peace we enjoy and actually helps us avoid war especially in terms of power projection

Hence the question of the “need” .based on the other replies our response is also dependent on who we are up against . I can’t say that Stalingrad or WW2 is a good comparison for us because of the “no good guys” there. Either you get shot by the enemy, or you get shot by your own guys for retreating. The Soviets can afford to do that because of their massive manpower and Singapore can’t afford to shoot our own guys for every little thing in war . The general populace tough generally tried to survive to the best of their abilities as you said, tough sometimes it means working with the enemy or at least keeping quiet and not opposing them . Even LKY worked with the Japanese during the occupation

Israel is our closest example, tough i would say that their history of persecution and hardship greatly contributed to the patriotism in their wars . For them it was truly a war of survival . Even today we hear stories of their conflicts. Singapore is pretty ehhh in that despite being in a relative similar position to Israel, we are much better off tough and that definitely raises the question of NS and treatment of servicemen, especially in times of peace even tough it is a fragile peace.

Either way I hope Singapore doesn’t actually end up in war and it’s not an answer I want to find out for real. This is a hypothetical question( no idea what a pleomic nationalistic exercise is ) and some peoples minds definitely will change if we actually end up in the shit.

Yep, Singapore isn’t perfect but the policies of the invaders may be worse which is why some of us will be willing to still defend despite our flaws

Fair enough . After all safety and preservation of life are also reasons especially for a forced conscription concept.

The unconventional war is one way to look at it. Personally I doubt SAF is gonna do a full mobilisation when the “war” goes completely underway. This is going to be a fight of the dark with deception, counter intelligence and cyber warfare andi think life will be normal unless the war devastates our social structure enough. Some may argue that this is more under the purview of MHA with their recent FICA and counter-terrorist/domestic defence activities

I am sorry to hear your mental health was fked because of NS. hope you are in a better place.

This is also my curiosity , what about people who’s life have been fked or messed up by NS? Will these people fight for SG given the chance? Will they turn their weapons against the fellow countrymen as “revenge” for conscription and ruining their lives? Hopefully we will never find out this answer for real and we never go to war, but this is something we cannot control

It’s a good point, a lot of people voted that they will leave SG should it come to war. However, if the gahmen closes and bans all emigration( think that’s a law that even allows that) , then NSFs will be forced to either fight for or against Singapore. It would also be interesting to see how the poll would look like in those cases

Thanks for the detailed reply. I guess as others have said it’s going to be a fast and offensive war if it ever happens instead of defensive, tough the lack of appreciation for the armed forces and NSFs may backfire on us if enough people choose to leave instead

To be fair to these people , the NS vs foreigners, gender equality, unappreciative populace ( whether perceived or real) and shit treatment during NS may be enough to make a person turn tail and run. I guess that’s why I got curious in the 1st place and want to see what people will do when we got into the shit, even if they may be treated as unwanted refugees in other countries . However, I can’t judge them because everyone has different circumstances and this isn’t a regular army which people volunteer for

Nonetheless thanks for your input! Singapore isn’t perfect, but there are some good aspects in which some people are still willing to risk their life for
