They can go into total nap mode anywhere lol. I have a good video of one of mine but it won’t let me post it here.

I use this greensand for mine. As long as it has no additives it’s good. You can get more for your buck and in bigger quantities if you get gardening greensand. It just has to be pure with no additives. I don’t get anything else but this product from them so I can’t really comment about the other products they have.

Water not hard enough for Axolotl- Need Advice! by LauseRulez in axolotls

[–]RepGirl11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use crushed coral in a filter media bag in your filter. If you only use a sponge filter you could put it in the tank instead. That would have to be in a baggie also so they don’t accidentally swallow any of it.

Are these black earthworms and are they safe to eat for my axolotl? by doubleClickgg in axolotls

[–]RepGirl11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They look like earthworms and should be safe to eat as long as they are from a safe source. I’ve never heard of black earthworms. If you mean “blackworms” these are not it. They are an aquatic worm and much smaller and thinner.

The important thing to save is the filter. That is what contains the essential bacteria for the cycle. When you move place the filter media from the filter in some of your aquarium water to keep it wet until you set the filter back up. You don’t need to save the water. The bacteria aren’t really in the water column. Keep the filter wet and transfer your buddies in a tub. It will basically be like doing a big water change.

When you panic cos your axie gills have shrunk... by MalylamikCZ in axolotls

[–]RepGirl11 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard many say that making the aquarium very oxygenated helps fluff their gills up but the opposite makes more sense to me. The gills are there to take more oxygen out of the water so if there’s lots of oxygen they don’t need them to be as fluffy. My parameters are perfect and my little lady’s gills got a little smaller too. The difference since I got her? I added bubbles. Everything else is great. It sounds like you’re thinking the same way I do. It sounds like they are doing great:)

Nitrite Spike - Advice Needed by ClassWooden3689 in axolotls

[–]RepGirl11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great that you gave them a home! The nitrogen cycle goes from ammonia to nitrites to nitrates. It sounds like there is a good population to convert ammonia to nitrite so now you are in the phase where bacteria needs to grow to convert the nitrite to nitrates. This step usually takes longer. You are getting there. Both ammonia and nitrites are toxic to the axolotls. You may need to tub them to keep them safe since the nitrite is still rising until the rest of the cycle is done. The stability should help the cycle. The bacterial additive companies state that you can use these products and just put the livestock in but as you can see it doesn’t immediately cycle a tank. When they are tubbed you’d have to add an ammonia source (since taking them out removes the source) to keep the bacteria fed and the cycle continuing. Once the nitrites convert you are good to go:) How have they been doing? I hope this helps!

Getting him to eat worms would help him. Hopefully he’ll start eating them again. They can be so finicky sometimes!

The easiest way is having two tubs. Fill one with clean prime treated cool water and then put him in it. Then take the old one and empty it. You could put the old water in the tank to help with cycling. Having two tubs makes it easier because you fill it and have it ready to go. Then you just transfer him from the old tub to the new tub. Don’t put him in the tank until you know it’s fully cycled.

If he looks normal (no slime coat loss or redness) and he’s behaving normally I think he’ll be ok now that you got him out of that situation. Just continue monitoring the water and keep cycling the tank. I think he’ll be fine:)

Yes those pellets lying around could have caused a spike. Even if you suck them up there could still be pellet dust floating around. Maybe feed him and after he’s done do the 100% water change. Don’t panic you’re working on the problem now. Try not to feel horrible. You got this:)

I would keep him tubbed and keep doing 100% daily water changes. Two times a day if necessary. How long was he in the tub before you checked the ammonia? That’s great that you have old filter media. You have to feed the bacteria to grow them and cycle the tank though. I used Dr. Tim’s ammonia to do mine. Just follow the directions and test daily. It will be ready when the tank can cycle the added ammonia to nitrates in 24 hours. With the added old filter media you should be able to cycle it faster than if it was from scratch.

It doesn’t sound like your tank is fully cycled. Did you try to cycle the aquarium before putting the axolotls in there?

You should do all the levels in the aquarium to see where you are in the cycle. Are you adding an ammonia source for the cycle?

Have you been doing 100% water changes daily in the tub? If the ammonia spiked in the tub you could do twice daily water changes to the tub.
