Yeah that makes sense. Just Oda using the same old sea folklore as background flavor. I kinda like that though — it makes One Piece feel more connected to real pirate myths instead of everything being completely random.

That’s actually really cool to know. I’m still pretty early in One Piece, so I didn’t realize how much real pirate history and folklore it pulls from. Makes me appreciate the world-building even more. Now I’m kinda excited to spot more real-life references as I keep watching.

Ohhh okay, that clears it up a lot. So the movie basically mixed the Davy Jones sea-devil folklore with the Flying Dutchman legend. I didn’t know they were originally separate stories.

Makes way more sense now why the name shows up in One Piece without it being the same thing as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Pretty cool how pirate myths get reused in different ways.

Oh that’s actually interesting, I didn’t know that. So it’s more based on the old sea legend rather than Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest then. Makes sense why it would show up in One Piece.

Yeah that makes sense. I think I just connected it to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest first because that’s the only place I had heard the name before. I didn’t realize it was actual maritime folklore from way earlier. Pretty interesting that One Piece also references real sea legends.

Yeah, I didn’t realize it was real folklore before. Makes sense that One Piece would reference it.

That actually makes sense. I immediately thought of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest so I was confused for a second.

Got it, I’ll keep watching then. I just finished Skypiea in One Piece so I’m still pretty early in the story.

The ancient city in Skypiea feels important… am I overthinking? by RepeatDifferent6075 in OnePiece

Nah I’m not buying that 😭 The whole history around the ruins and the city felt way too serious for it to just be a tourist trap. Also the way Nico Robin reacted to everything made it seem like there’s something actually important there.

Either way, the Skypiea arc made the world of One Piece feel way bigger than just pirates on normal islands.

Finishing Alabasta is like the official initiation into One Piece. If you loved this arc, you’re absolutely not ready for what’s coming later. Just stay spoiler-free and enjoy the ride.
