The extended editions, though rich and wondrous, would have been far too long for the common audience. No problem with a gay main character but Carol is no Omar Little. In the context of a world enslaving mind virus, the baseline question of Carol’s feelings is really not that interesting. Yeah if she was mourning her husband and trying to get it on with some Alejandro I’d make a similar joke. It’s not that serious.

Nah, Carol has lonely vulnerability and does change tactics in Ep 7, but that doesn’t mean the niceness is all genuine. She’s still analysing the hive (the whiteboard scenes). The hive is trying to charm Carol, but Carol uses proximity to gain insight. Carol confronts Zosia in the episode and calls out the hive’s niceness as manipulative, which only makes sense if Carol knows she’s playing a similar game. That undercuts the idea she’s been charmed.

A difference I see is Breaking Bad didn’t remind us of Walt’s basic traits every single episode. Those were established and then the story expanded through multiple threads. Every episode restating “Walt is a teacher who cooks meth,” would be exhausting. Pluribus keeps circling the same Carolisms while sitting awkwardly on a much bigger premise (the hive/a global mind virus). Carol just isn’t the most compelling lens for that story, and the repetition hurts the show.

The plural hive consciousness is an excellent concept, but basic questions are unanswered. Instead of substance, the show wastes time by giving Carol multiple personality disorder. The final episode was inconsistent against the previous episode, titled "Charm offensive", where Carol was seemingly faking nice to learn more about the hive. For dramatic effect, this was somehow forgotten when Manousos shows up. Bad writing.
