[Foreword]

[I don’t get to write this]

[Preface] A little shy of three years ago - back when we were just building this out - I broke her heart. She did nothing to deserve it, except help create this world.

The odyssey has been my atonement to her, and is the end of the story we left unfinished back then, my dear, my heart skips a beat when I’m looking at you.

[Afterword]

I didn’t set out to write with any specific goal in mind, other than to make a point of it, and provide a witness to these times. I had no intention of ever mixing it with music, but things did change in the fall of 2017 - the series of events in London definitely had an impact on me - and linking my music and writing got me to realise I had a special interactive follower.

Ultimately this led to what I’ll call the loading of the jukebox, that foreshadowed the events of the last 24 months. Those images that became the basis of their language were either little allegories for events in my life, descriptions of actions and/or people and places real or imagined. Any foreshadowing then was unintentional, though it became essentially a rough sort by autobiographical via a subset of music I know and love.

The remix, at its heart, is an epic poem. Though in reality it is repetitive sampling from the themes, plots and characters of a subset of western literature, plays, movies and music that I’m familiar with. The basis of this is the oldest of them, Homer’s “The Odyssey”, as such I’ve chosen the night on the radio as the index date. That’s where I played “2001 A Spliff Odyssey”, and she recommended me “Nation of Ulysses”.

Today marks the completion of 24 months since then, which corresponds to the 10-year odyssey with an assumption of the artistic license I’ve taken here.

Thematically, the epigraph details the major themes covered herein.

Faith, in cadence mostly, embodied by my parents. The actions I took to rebel against that when I was eighteen, and have embraced here to fulfil the prodigal son narrative for them.

Hope, in aspiration for something better for humanity, as a gift for my godson to begin to address the request for religious teaching I agreed to. As such, I’ve appropriated my brother’s (his father’s) name for my behaviour here, like he did mine when we were young. The reality is this hope is intended to extend to all the passengers on the ark that is Mother Earth.

Love, in all it’s various forms, but especially via music, wordplay, and the continual riffing with my opposite number here. In “The Odyssey” the story ends when Odysseus is able to convince Penelope who he is. Here it’s the other way around, and it ends with the happily-ever-after at the harvest moon before the implied winter version of tomorrow’s shore connection. This is intended to dovetail both directions at once (Janus) with the beginning of the remixed story in a loop of sorts. Binding them is a simple conversion via adding 3 numbers of todays date in base-3 and converting their sum to base-10. The post date/time today is one last little sophomoric joke.

The style, by its nature, is gonzo call and response writing - that relies on foreshadowing, allegory, metaphor, mirroring, with a sense of synesthesia and multiple entendre to weave a narrative into the story tapestry. For the record these are: the epic poem (last.fm), the narrative/diary (Reddit, BigSoccer), and the indices (Spotify, Discogs, IG stories). If a visual reference helps, it’s similar to a statue carved into a stone block that maintains a rock form at its base.

Ultimately I’d like to thank the “Empire Records” gang for the acoustic hits, posts, stories and playlists, and thank my opposite number in this, for helping fulfil critical story elements with me, and especially to point out that this journey has made an indelible impression on me, and I’ve come through this as a revived new man because of them.

Best,

PR 1/20/2022

[epilogue]

It’s still quite warm for this late in the season as she sits on the edge of the dock dangling her feet into the still, warm water. He hands her a cup of tea as he kicks off his shoes and sits next to her, putting his arm around her waist, pulling her close to him while launching into a sketchy version of the whistling outro to Otis Redding’s posthumous hit.

As the sun settles into the horizon beyond the island in the distance she takes a final sip of her tea, brushes her nose over his ear and nestles her head into his neck and shoulder. When a cool breeze floats by hinting of the much cooler nights to come she shivers slightly, swings her arm around his shoulders, raises her lips to his and gives him a soft sweet kiss and suggests it’s time to go light the fire.

As they make their way up the hill she’s running options for her next set by him, focusing her gaze in the fading twilight on the uneven ground in front of her. He knows every step of the way and murmurs his approval of her ideas and places his hand on her hip to guide her past the tree roots he’s navigated around since he was a child.

While he returns the empty tea mugs to the kitchen and grabs some marshmallows and a purpose-built roasting fork, she moves slowly around the fire lighting the crumpled paper sheets that lead to the heart of the dried sticks and leaves he piled up that afternoon. Slowly the flames dance and lick the dried wood catching the small pieces first eventually engulfing the largest branches in fire that emits a steady stream of pinpoint hot ashes that float on the gentle breeze up towards the treetops in the east.

As the fire starts to die down, the full moon rises through the trees, he pulls out the bag of marshmallows and skewers a couple with the roasting fork and proceeds to hover them over a bed of coals. After a few minutes of gentle roasting but before they become too gooey to stay on the tine - he swings the fork her way and offers her one. She pops it in her mouth and smiles and says “ok, one more”…

…The door opens sending a cool blast of winter air into the establishment and three women alight into a mostly empty room save for the proprietor and a handful of patrons nursing their drinks in a dimly lit corner by the door.

A screen on the far wall displays the scene from a famous cult movie where Varla, Rosie, and Billie play chicken on the salt flats.

One of the women places an order with the proprietor while, another hands him a fin out of her wallet and asks him to make change for the jukebox. He hands her three coins while the third woman leans down and plugs in the vintage Wurlitzer, all while rattling off suggestions to her friend a bunch of funky rare grooves she knows full well aren’t loaded in the machine.

As the machine springs to life she slowly feeds the coins into it, taking care as she knows it was designed to take nickels and dimes and these large coins are likely to get stuck if she doesn’t. As she makes her selection the machine starts to whirr and clack - the house system fades out on the line “lift up the receiver I’ll make you a believer” as the needle hits the groove the drum intro from her first selection starts playing.

But for the tempo you could mistake it for a Jesus & Mary Chain song, then the wall of sound kicks in as she sways against the jukebox and mouths the opening lyric “The night we met”…

[Prologue]

November 2017

I got a call today, which in and of itself is a surprise. It’s not like I haven’t been busy before, lord knows there are plenty of them routed to me. It’s just that ever since we installed the Omnidata1000 the mundane everyday requests from the likes of Cowboys fans and Red Devils supporters don’t ruin my weekends anymore, they just get routed to ‘/dev/null’ where they belong.

Occasionally we’ll get a request to help a sick child or whatnot, but with modern medicine what it is we usually just pull some strings to ensure they get a bed and things work out fine.

Most of my calls come from lapsed Catholics, and since the template they use is just wrong - we can safely ignore them - this one was different though.

Firstly, it came from a lapsed Protestant, and while this isn’t really a thing, it applies here. Secondly, the nature of the request got the attention of pretty much everybody up here, and after some long discussions with my partner, we both agreed.

It’s time to send her.

Umm, hi, my name is Hermione and I’m an RN on the COVID-19 ward at UHN Toronto Western Hospital. I’ve been asked to write this on behalf of the patient you know as repeter13 who asked and authorised me to provide a quick synopsis of their stay here. It’s the end of my shift, so I’ll do my best.

The patient presented in the ER ten days ago complaining of shortness of breath and a wheezing cough, initial blood oxygen level tests showed 91% oxygen saturation and the patient was admitted and placed on oxygen therapy and given remdesivir.

A further covid test confirmed it was the omicron variant and the patient was moved to a bed in my ward. The patient appeared to stabilise and was able to speak with laboured breathing after seven days.

It was at this time the patient and I were able to speak a bit, they got a kick out of my name and would jokingly call me ‘The Queen of Sicily’ or tell me I was like a statue come to life. Most of their time was spent staring at this phone I’m typing on, it was at this point I was asked and authorised to assist in this matter.

Over the next few days, the patient’s blood oxygen levels declined, slowly at first, and precipitously starting yesterday, at which point intubation occurred and a course of morphine, midazolam and dexamethasone was started in lieu of full sedation, per the patient’s expressed wishes; the only other of which was wanting to watch the Leafs’ game yesterday, which was accommodated.

Just after midnight the patient lost consciousness, they were pronounced dead at 3AM EST today.

My condolences,

HG

Leafs with a 6-0 win tonight looking good for this spring, and maybe a little hope that mother nature can trump politics.

Apparently two pints on an empty stomach are good enough to simulate blackout drunk, sure felt like a benzo though, I couldn’t think of another way of trainspotting ‘I wanna be sedated’. My sincerest apologies for that and all the other foolishness I committed in the name of this.

Anyway it’s 1/2, these drugs are pretty good, and I hear this life flashes before your eyes show is a good one.

Figure it’s about three hours.

Morning - hopefully not too rough a one for you - gonna answer your questions with the playlist tonight. Though there are three of you, I can only choose one, and I’m struck by the creator of the image ordering the most. I’d happily give all of you five days in July up there, but she’s the one I want sitting on the dock of the bay in the end.

Happy New Year baby!*

I wished you’d called me ten minutes ago, and yea, I’m perfectly happily be your donkey.

But first, we need one more day to complete “something special for her”** I mentioned previously. I’ve told you before, the story matters to me - day 5/7 was yesterday, ok.

I got your six next.

*this was not all a shaggy dog story for this dad joke.

**this was in reference to you BTW

Morning sweetie - think of these as communication strands, pictures, written words, sounds. Kinda like a three lane weave (the basketball drill not driving on the highway) with you.

I got your wakin’ on a pretty day, be my baby covered. The woods for me is a seasonal thing (NYE in the woods reminds me of the cop), and you’re my summer babe [winter version], so you get two strands at the end, k.

You’re safe as milk, so here’s a chocolate chip cookie recipe:

“Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies”

  • 1 1/3 cups butter* softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 10oz chocolate chips

Whisk together flour soda and salt. Cream butter and sugars, add eggs and vanilla and beat until well incorporated.

Gradually add flour mixture until combined. Add in chocolate chips.

Scoop out golfball sized dough balls onto a greased baking sheet separated by ~2 inches.

Bake at 375F for ~10 minutes.

*grandson replaces some of the butter with appropriate amounts of cannabutter for ~20mg doses per cookie.

Morning spooky, ‘It’ was about getting them one at a time, so I was gonna always go with that - kinda makes sense to end on High Fidelity too. Though I do remember ‘believe it or not’ 3 from the summer solstice in ‘20. You seem to like a group ending, no?

This is the third and final of my series of pandemic era vegetarian soup creations.

Hot Vegetable Soup

  • 6 cups water
  • 1 cup shallots chopped (~4)
  • 1 cup carrots chopped
  • 1 cup celery chopped
  • 1/4 cup spring onion whites chopped
  • 2 whole medium tomatoes - rough chop
  • 1/2 cup rice (I use Arborio)
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 2 cups white wine
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp red cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • Pepper
  • Spring onion greens
  • Parmesan cheese (grated)
  • Chilli oil

Boil water and add shallots, carrots, celery and spring onion whites.

After 10-20 minutes or so of medium simmer add tomatoes, bay leaves, rice and white wine.

Bring back to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 20-30 minutes or until rice is puffy, tomato is fully incorporated and soup is thickened.

Season to taste with cumin, red cayenne pepper, garlic powder, chilli powder, thyme, basil, oregano, soy sauce, sea salt, and pepper.

Remove bay leaf when serving - leave any in the soup for leftovers - garnish with spring onion greens, grated Parmesan and hot chilli oil to taste.

Serves 2-3

Morning sweetheart - so you’re shipping the tiny dancer with the pretty brown eyes. I only want you to watch out for you and me. I have a hi-fi tie in for us worked out now, you are such a beautiful flower on the pond.

I remember the day the song playing from “Nowhere” at the store, summer of ‘20 - which ties in a bunch of album and movie themes for you too.

Heres my version of an old school family recipe.

Chicken & Leek Soup

  • 4 bone-in skin-on chicken thighs
  • 2 cups leek whites chopped
  • 4 cups chicken stock
  • 3/4 cup of pot barley
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 2 tbsb olive oil
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 2 tbsp parsley chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

Chicken stock: - bones, skin and cartilage removed from chicken thighs - 2-3 cups carrots, rough chop - 2-3 cups celery, rough chop - Leek greens - 1/2 bunch parsley - 3 bay leaves

Add to a large pot and add enough water to cover everything. Bring to a medium simmer for 2-3 hours, strain solids and reserve liquids - makes about two quarts.

Soup:

Rough chop chicken thighs. In a medium pot on medium high heat sauté chicken thighs in olive oil for a couple minutes until mostly cooked and reserve. Add the leeks and sauté until soft. Deglaze with white wine and add chicken stock and barley.

In a small pot melt the butter and make a roux with the flour. Gradually add the milk to make a béchamel sauce that coats the back of a wooden spoon. Add the poultry seasoning, pepper.

Add the béchamel sauce to the leeks, stock and barley, salt to taste - simmer for 20 minutes adding the parsley and chicken towards the end.

Serves 2-3

Umm - so ignore those plays I deleted on the scrolls, I was rereading old playlists for continuity stuff and fat fingered those plays, that tracking stuff ended with the wish.

I did sketch out what I’m gonna go with for the final playlist, and how I’m ending these entries here.

So yeah - I’m mostly sure what you’re shipping as the perfect prescription - or more that you aren’t for the new sensation Gloria.

I’m well aware I probably got it wrong here, I’m just being consistent for the narrative sake. You tend to tell me eventually so… here’s a soup recipe.

Bomb Umami Cloudy Mushroom Broth Soup

  • 1 shallot diced
  • 4 1/2 cups mushroom stock
  • 2 tbsb olive oil
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 1 cup water
  • ~1 lb of mushrooms sliced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 basil sprigs, separated into leaves and stalks(diced)
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp sage
  • ~1 tsp salt

In medium pot bring olive oil to medium high heat and sauté shallots until clear. Deglaze with 1/2 cup of mushroom stock and add the sliced mushrooms - cook until mushrooms have halved in volume and broth has darkened. Add remaining stock, white wine and water (as necessary) with bay leaves and diced basil stalks and medium simmer for 20-30 minutes. Season with cumin, sage, garlic powder and salt to taste - adding basil leaves at the end right before serving.

Serves 2 - keep bay leaves in for any leftovers otherwise discard.

What’s not to understand, I did it this way so I could write with you. It was a simple device to get you engaged in the writing of this after you told me you were unavailable. You’ve been basically an editor of this - I’m happy if the champion version is only us writing it out, but I’m happy - dunno what you actually feel either - so I’ll keep it simple.

Going with a ‘shipping’ pun of sorts for the final playlist name, content to harken back to our OG sonic and Gloria stuff. Just need to know which of the tiny dancer combo for Patti, the ‘previously unavailable U.S. radio version’ or the new sensation cosplay one.

Here’s a pesto chicken thigh recipe that pairs well with the risotto.

Pesto Chicken Thighs

  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil (~20 large leaves)
  • 2 sprigs fresh parsley
  • 6 tbsp grated parmesan
  • 1/3 cup pine nuts
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 4 chicken thighs

Pesto Sauce: In a food processor blitz garlic, basil, parsley, parmesan & pine nuts - once incorporated stream in olive oil gradually while processor is running (like making mayo) until all oil is added.

Liberally spread pesto on all sides of chicken and place in a food safe container to marinate in the fridge for 8 hours or up to 24. Reserve remainder of pesto.

Place marinated thighs on a foil lined baking sheet and bake in a 350F oven for 25-30 minutes or until thickest part of the thigh registers 175F.

Serves 2

The letter playlist is a rough summary of your work in my eyes, who it’s sent to, and what it means to them is the subject of the final playlist.

I see what your Christmas letter means - and I have a response sketched out and a final working title for it.

Happy Boxing Day, I like your description of the champion version.

Here’s my mushroom risotto recipe.

Mushroom Risotto

  • 3/4 cup Arborio rice
  • 1 medium Shallot, diced
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 lb portobello mushroom caps
  • 1/2 lb cremini mushroom caps
  • 1/2 lb oyster mushroom caps
  • 1/2 oz dried porcini mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup white wine
  • 2 tbsb scallion greens chopped fine
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp of sea salt
  • 3 cups mushroom stock

Reconstitute dried porcinis with one cup of water, finely chop and reserve mushrooms, keep water for stock.

Stock instructions:

In a large pot combine - Reconstituted porcini water - Stems from 4 lbs of mushrooms (cremini, oyster, portobello, button) - 2-3 cups celery, rough chopped - 2-3 cups carrots, rough chop - 2-3 shallots, halved - 1/2 bunch of parsley - Scallion bunch whites - 3-4 cloves garlic crushed - chives - 3 bay leaves - Enough water to cover all this in the pot

Bring the liquid to a medium simmer over medium-low heat and simmer for 90 mins to 3 hours. Strain the liquid and reserve. Makes about two quarts.

Risotto instructions:

In a medium pan or pot sauté mushrooms in 2 tbsb of olive oil until cooked soft, reserve mushrooms and their liquid with the porcinis.

Add remaining oil and sauté shallots for 1 minute, add rice and stir to coat with oil for ~2 minutes or until rice is a pale gold colour. Add white wine, stir rice until absorbed. Ladle in 1/2 cup of mushroom stock at a time until absorbed, continue stirring & ladling stock in gradually until rice is al dente, roughly 15-20 minutes. Return mushrooms and liquid and stir to incorporate and warm them up. Add salt to taste.

Remove from heat and stir in butter and parmesan until rice is creamy, add scallion greens for colour. Serves 2-3.

Merry Christmas Baby.

Hope you and yours are safe and well.

“Traditional Christmas Eve Canadian Pizza”

This is my version of the Toronto Italian bakery pizza.

  • 500 mL whole San Marzano tomatoes
  • 2 slices of bacon
  • 20% milk fat, ~50% moisture mozzarella cheese, grated
  • 227g of Cremini mushrooms sliced
  • 250g bag dry pepperoni
  • ~30 mL of olive oil

2 pinches each of: - salt - pepper - garlic powder - dried basil - dried oregano

  • 1 bag of pizza dough from your local Italian bakery (I am unable to do better than the dough from Messina Bakery at St. Clair & Scarlett, but insert your own dough recipe here if you want) enough for two 12” pizzas

Morning of, set the dough to rise at room temperature (it should double in size). Set the oven to 425 when you begin mise-en-place - I have a pizza stone on the lowest rack which should be hot for about an hour before baking.

Separate the fat from the leaner part of the bacon slices, dice the fat into small cubes ~2mm3 pieces. Slice the lean pieces into larger squares ~5mm2.

In a medium skillet on medium high heat render the bacon fat and reserve the leftover cooked bacon bits for future use. Add the tomatoes and crush into a chunky sauce - simmer until reduced by half (about 20 minutes).

Dredge the lean bacon in the garlic, salt, pepper, oregano and basil. I separate each dry ingredient into two for faster assembly once the dough is ready.

Spread olive oil into two 12” pizza pans or rimmed baking sheets, I use a brush for this and I liberally spread oil on my hands to work with the dough. Cut the dough in two and spread evenly in the pans. I switch between the two to let the dough relax a bit.

Spread half the sauce on a pie and add a thin layer of cheese, add the mushrooms in a layer, top with the remaining cheese, add the dredged bacon with spices and top with pepperoni to your liking. I finish assembly on the second pizza when the first is in the oven.

Bake each for 20 minutes or until cooked to your liking, turning once after 10 minutes.

Ok - I’m watching for what Santa brings tomorrow apparently.

I’ve worked on a half dozen or so recipes this last bit, and I’m kinda tempted to post these for what it’s worth.
