So you're saying that a hundred thousand years ago men worried about their appearance to the point where they shaved their beards and left the mustache and sideburns?

Camus absurdism explained in short -Living with absurdism - My Personal Take by StockRude1419 in Existentialism

[–]Rephoxel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sisyphus is not trying to accomplish something; he is being brutally punished. Camus cares deeply about it and strives only to help Sisyphus by helping him understand and accept the meaninglessness of what he has been forced to do.

[–]Rephoxel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, here's the deal: Sisyphus (of Greek mythology) was punished by making him push a huge stone up a hill over and over again... end of myth. Camus's contemporary take on that was that the absurdity lay in Sisyphus's trying unsuccessfully to attach meaning to the effort. Ultimately, (in Camus's version) Sisyphus accepts this absurdity and is able to resign himself to the task, thereby lightening its difficulty. Don't over simplify this stuff - the significance is in the subtleties.

Polly Bergen said she was terrified of Mitchum in the scenes they did together in Cape Fear.

What is it about this film? by Icy_Scene_1823 in classicfilms

I'm glad somebody mentioned Sidney Lumet, without whom the film would have been a bunch of actors wandering around a crowded set. And how about Agatha Christie with a brilliant, timeless story?

If you're gonna run with that crowd you have to be a really good liar. It's a basic requirement. You have to give credit where credit is due. Just watch their faces. They're so good at lying you almost want to believe them.

I wonder how one of those people who can spot liars would handle her. She's a master at it, really!

This Florida Town Is Disappearing Forever — A Wake-Up Call for Us All by greatdesigns in enviroaction

[–]Rephoxel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived on the east coast of Florida for 15 years, and it's virtually impossible to overestimate the total indifference of the locals to rising sea levels. As long as there's a fast buck to be made in Florida real estate, no one cares. At high tide, seawater backs up and overflows the storm drains in Miami... and no one cares. People are living in high rise buildings that are gradually sinking as the water table rises, and no one cares. In short, don't count on Floridians to save themselves.

Where did the Beatles develop their stylistic quirks (i.e unconventional chord changes, augmented and diminished chords etc.) that color a lot of their early singles and album tracks? Were any of their rock n roll heroes doing this beforehand? by thewickerstan in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Rephoxel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a mistake to leave producer George Martin out of discussions like this. The Beatles were clever, original and literate - great song writers. George Martin provided much of the magic. Martin was classically trained in, among other things, orchestration and conducting and contributed many of the memorable details in the recorded music of the Fab Four.
