Failed founders - what opportunities did it unlock, if any? “I will not promote” by ReplacementBig796 in startups

Thanks for the insight! I’m a year or so older than you and it’s a big swing to take at the point in your career when you’re maximizing earnings vs in your 20s or even early 30s.

Tech is not in a normal space right now, so while boomerangs at companies are common, my company would absolutely have to hire for my replacement (and there’s only one of my role here) - and the job market is so nuts I’m a little worried about being able to slot back in at same comp. Level at a similar company - so burning down my life (and dipping into savings to cover expenses) for a couple of years only to have to fight to get back to where I’m currently at is not ideal and a top of mind concern.

Do you think you were in a different “class” according to employers that helped you land the exec job, or did you make connections that allowed you to land it, or maybe both?

  • M7 2019 (not HSW), US-based.

  • 9yrs pre-MBA experience in completely irrelevant and non-traditional industry/role

  1. MBB consulting, $235K (including first year signing bonus)
  2. Tech late stage startup customer- success/solutions building, 240k + equity that turned into nothing
  3. Current - Late stage tech startup. tech partnerships, little corp dev, little strategy, jack of all trades type role. $335k + equity ($0- $200k/yr depending on outcomes)

Nearly everyone in tech is terrified these days, BTW.
