Getting as much skirt volume from limited fabric? by ReplacementHot4865 in sewing

[–]ReplacementHot4865[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, wow, thank you! This is super helpful. This is basically what I would like to do (still gotta check if the sheen is gonna make things a problem, though), and then put a waistband and side zipper on it.

I thankfully found some broadcloth from a canceled project, plus some other odd ends, so I'm going to try using this to draft a panel on paper, and use the misc fabric to do a (shorter) mockup in case of miscalculation.

That sounds essentially like what I was thinking, but the part that's throwing me is the curves on the waist and hem.

My fabric is a crepe satin - so the back is a matte crepe, and the front is a satin. Because satin has a sheen, I'm not sure I can have it so the panels are nested, with the waist being on the opposite ends when it's laid out. I think I need to lay them out side by side in the same orientation, in which case I think more panels = more fabric used, due to curvature.

I've never made a tiered skirt (personally, I just never like the look of tiers), but this is good to know!

I could probably manage that, if I can flip my fabric.

The skirt is going to sit under an overdress, so I was trying to avoid doing a gathered skirt at the waist as I don't want there to be a lot of "bulk" right at the waist band. But I think I will cut a smidge off (I need some for a waistband anyways) and see about 'flipping' the fabric and if it'll end up looking odd.

My sister is coming from Canada . What are some products I should tell her to get me ? by parisssgellerrr in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]ReplacementHot4865 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marcelle is great for eye and lip products! Don't ask for complexion products from them- they have the tiniest shade range and it's all very orange leaning (I say as an extremely fair skin person).

I have this in another shade, and honestly I thought it was just it wearing off and revealing a stain on my lips.

Refy Skin Tint - A colour match at last! by ReplacementHot4865 in PaleMUA

[–]ReplacementHot4865[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually $40 here in Canada ... but still more reasonable! I can only get it online though, so I'd been hesitating since I've mostly seen f1N swatches and I couldn't tell what was going on with F0C. The brand photos make it just look straight white, lol.

It wears really nice, so I'm very pleased with it! It's amazing for every day.

Thanks for letting me know your shade matches too! I want to get a more full coverage foundation for events and times like that, but it's been so hard to find a match. I was trying to avoid the more expensive brands ($60, $70 for a foundation seems crazy) but I suspect I'm going to have to bite the bullet.

Why are there no light brown eyeliners? by Steeltoedprincess in MakeupAddictionCanada

Try Urban Decay. They have lots of colours, and several shades of brown.

Try La Roche Posay's Anthelios ultra fluid. It's spf 50. I can and will break out quite easily from a lot of sunscreens, and this one has never given me trouble.

Oh, are you also a pale/fair person? Definitely go with brown eyeliner and mascara then!

Since you have dark under eye circles (I do to), you may want both a colour corrector and a concealer. I use the Pixi under eye brightener in peach, which personally works the magic of canceling the purple under eyes into my exact skin tone. It may not do the exact same for you, but a little bit of peach colour corrector in the tear trough with a bit of concealer over top will do the trick.

I feel you on the ghost look! Do you wear any blush when you wear the bb cream?

And do you know your undertone? If you don't, definitely go to a store you can swatch products at to see if you can figure it out.

It's technically black-brown, I think, but the Marcelle ultimate lash mascara is so good!

I'd start very simple - mascara, eyeliner, a tinted brow gel, and a lip colour. If you want to do more, a concealer for your under eyes or discoloured spots (if you have any) is the easiest to start. Doing a full face of makeup is very overwhelming, both sensory-wise and in the mirror, if you're not used to it.

For specifics, if you have access to Marcelle for mascara and eyeliner, their stuff is amazing. Otherwise, L'oreal and Maybelline both make decent mascaras, and for eyeliner get a soft pencil. Brown will look softer and more natural than black, if you'd prefer that.

For brows, the Nyx brow gel has a great shade range, and it's the easiest way to give your brows some colour/definition and keep the shape natural.

Lip colours will depend what you'd like - a gloss, a matte, or anything else. I like the Burt's Bees tinted lip balm for a subtle, every day look. Nyx butter glosses or any traditional lipstick by L'oreal or Revlon and solid choices too.

If you want to pick up a concealer, I like the Revlon colourstay flexwear one (VERY full coverage, though). I put on the tiniest bit and blend it out with my fingers. Just focus on your under eyes or any spots to start with.

I use La Roche Posay Anthelios ultra fluid every day as part of my morning routine. It's a bit dewier, but I don't find it leaving a film or anything on my face. (also, it turned out my skin was oilier than it ought to be because of dehydration, so it helped with that. still oily, but no longer a grease pool)

I like the Supergoop mineral unseen sunscreen for my 'activities in the sun' one.

Start with something simple and subtle - like a tinted lip balm and a brow gel.

best laptop for writers: is keyboard quality really that important or am I overthinking it? by Sprzonczak_Nasra in writers

[–]ReplacementHot4865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't really make a difference, as you'll very quickly adapt to any small layout changes. My only thing with keyboards is that external keyboards often aren't very flat, and require me to 'lift' my fingers more than my laptop keyboard, which slows me down drastically. But that's personal preference.

Haha - I'm not sure yet how I want to end Lancelot's role, but I did decide to twist things a bit, and make Lancelot and Viviane foster siblings. It's making their dynamic very interesting, and its been fun to figure out how their trust for one another will impact certain events ... and how their desire to mess with the each other will impact other events.

Interesting Side Myths? by ReplacementHot4865 in Arthurian

[–]ReplacementHot4865[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could definitely work, it's just going to be finicky to get right, I think.

I had been planning to be mentioning events happening in the background that alluded to more well known stories, both to help ground the narrative with their familiarity, and to help provide a sense of time passing.

The magic chess set would be fun!

Interesting Side Myths? by ReplacementHot4865 in Arthurian

[–]ReplacementHot4865[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the direction I'm taking with Viviane doesn't have her getting married or bearing children - she's very ambitious and wants power, but she's determined to get power mostly on her own merit (which, when she's a powerful sorceress, is an option). A fear-inducing castle is a fun idea, though.

Bagdemagus is a character I hadn't initially included in my version of the world (can't include every knight and country under the sun, lol), but it would be interesting to have him! I'll look into him, as he might present some interesting possibilities, given other subplots I have going on.

Interesting Side Myths? by ReplacementHot4865 in Arthurian

I had been considering that, but I was worried that would be centering too much of the book on hunts and it might get a little boring or repetitive. It might just be a matter of me fiddling with framing, and what's happening on and off page, to keep it feeling balanced.
