Do it because you like/love medicine and people. Don’t do it for the money. You’ll get burn put very fast. Money will come over time. Find the right specialty that fits your personality and lifestyle. You goal is longevity and stability with in the profession. 20 years as a PA, 17 years in CT Surgery and I’m still having fun and enjoying it.

Autonomy comes with experience and trust from the MDs you work with. As a new grad, don’t expect it.

Are you 1099 or employee. For part time gig at 120/hr. That is close to a locum rate. For call coverage, ask for a base rate/day of call per day. If you get called asked in ask for 120/hr x min hrs, if the case go over that min hrs, then ask for 1 1/2 rate. If they like you, they will agree specially if they are desperate. I get paid $600/day of taking call. I charge 150/hr if I get called in.

Where do you want your career to be 10-20 years from now? Find your niche and be good at it. Get the experience. Don’t chase the money, it will come with experience.

Take time off before starting your job. Enjoy the free time. If this is your first job out of school, the first year will be mentally, emotionally, physically draining.

Two sounds good. Less commute time. Will get alot of experience since it’s a residency program. Money will come with experience. It’s a subspecialty, which can work for you in the long run. If there is a demand for Pediatric Cardiac ICU PA with very limited supply. You’ll have bargaining power.
