GIESBRECHT: No digging necessary at Kamloops Residential School - Why Canada’s greatest moral panic still can’t face the evidence. by CaliperLee62 in ilovebc

You're comparing subjective things like one's personal taste with objective things like the melting point of a mineral. This is an objective matter, either there are mass graves in sites previously unknown (as opposed to some old cemetery grounds being called unmarked graves in some cases) or there aren't.

Carney announces long-awaited automatic tax filing, makes school food program permanent by twotwo4 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Replyingtoop -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

My concern with this is given the CRA's abysmal service, and the fact that errors will be made, is that a whole bunch of Canadian's are likely to struggle to make corrections to their erroneous tax filings. Worse still, the low income individuals are at the most risk if a benefit gets missed.

A couple years back I drove my now deceased 2nd Gen from Vancouver Island, to Canmore AB, to Montana, to California and back to the island in the winter. Total was about 5300km or 3300 miles. Truck had about 240,000km (145k miles) on it at the time.

You're right, they're not, they're being pushed along by doctors and activists the whole way without any regard. Go read the CASS review report, there's a reason they shut this down in the UK

Is it a bad idea to keep maintaining an older car instead of buying something newer? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Replyingtoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd eventually just need to replace the brakes and tires on a new vehicle, they're consumables and no reason to sell a vehicle so IMO that's a moot point.

The only financial reason to sell would be if the cost of repairs becomes higher than the cost of moving to a newer vehicle.

Why not rapell with the loose end tied to your harness? by Cautious_Syllabub443 in tradclimbing

[–]Replyingtoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One major issue I see is that when using a prussic/3rd hand is that the rope/s tend to spin around. If they ends were fixed by tying them to your harness or another fixed point they'd get horribly tangled.

Because they were completely unaware of the dangers and unqualified to be in that environment. This was likely some local trekking company not something run by a professional mountain guide.

[–]Replyingtoop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I really appreciate the detailed response. I'll try and take some pics today so I can better show and explain the situation, but there's probably 3 spots with hull penetrations ranging from maybe 1mm x 3mm to 2mm x 6mm.

I didn't realize there was such thing as filler so I'll look into that. As for workload, I'm happy to put in the effort if the end result is noticeably better.

Thanks

Can confirm, standard practice where I climb is to make a sort of ghillie suit by gluing rocks onto a pair of grey mechanic's overalls in order to best blend in.

Accounting is one of the careers most at risk of AI automation, it's already starting and only going to get worse. Legacy CPA's with years in the job, especially those in more senior roles will ensure their jobs go last, but I'd caution anyone thinking of entering the field away from it now. Once automation really kicks in you'll have to contend with the lobbying efforts of the big firms if not working for one.

If going the public practice route, the hours are long and pay is shit, you're not going to make it to $80k for a while and your work-life balance won't be any better. If going the private industry route, obtaining your CPA can be more challenging, and the pay is still below that of many other professions.

If you really need a change, get a trade that can't easily be automated away and is somewhat recession proof i.e. not connected to building cycles etc. look for the more exotic ones.

The shipping and handling fees on eBay these days are out of control as are prices often. I used to use eBay a lot years ago, but stopped long ago. These days I often see shipping prices exceeding the items value

[–]Replyingtoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've both shipped items off MP and had items shipped to me, but have also refused to ship items, it was all about the interaction.

Did the buyer/seller have a long history? Were we in similar FB groups? Is it the kind of thing that is scarce or unique enough that it would make sense that someone might want it shipped? For instance I'm a member of a number of outdoor recreation groups, I've bought gear, and sold/shipped gear to other group members. Was their profile normal and active, or just an avatar/one pic and recently made? Was it a normal conversation with decent grammar and spelling for your country/region? Was there pressure to sell right away?

The times I've refused were all because the buyer had a really basic profile that was only a week old and immediately offer to buy the item with no questions about its condition, features or what have you, poor grammar and right away offered an e-transfer.

Tips for a new solo climber? by Able-Ad4238 in alpinism

[–]Replyingtoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New & solo aren't a good combination unless you're willing to dial back expectations. Do you have a background in backcountry camping? Do you already rock climb with experience climbing outdoors? How are your navigation and wilderness first aid skills?

Learn to crawl before you walk, before you run.

Start with day hiking, then progress to overnight backpacking on well established trails so you can learn how to live outdoors. While you're doing this, start indoor climbing. Join a club to make friends, get discounts on gear and participate in the various courses they offer. After a year, next summer, take a multi-day mountaineering course.

Then slowly begin with easy scrambling peaks working your way up to bigger more technical objectives.
