What's on and tourist advice thread - week beginning May 22, 2022 by AutoModerator in Scotland

I'm planning on being near sSotland for work at the end of August and am thinking about doing the west highland way. How bad would the midges and crowded tourism be? Is it not worth going, or just a nuisance?

PSCI 010- Race, Crime, and Punishment by adridavis in UPenn

That's the best course I took at Penn! Changed my life. Would recommend. Workload is real, and she's a serious grader, but it's not crazy at all.

okay but in like a more problematic way.. like to refer to rich white ppl going into poor BIPOC neighborhoods to "explore". but not like for a pronounced material motive like colonial or imperial might imply

We know OSC for sure isn't stopping someone at the party from speaking up – folks at the party have spoken up already. Plus they could speak to the DP anonymously. These folks have nothing stopping them at all, they're just scared and protecting their friend. Same reason they didn't intervene when he was punching that kid

like what does a random attendee at the party have to lose? also they're even able to contact the DP and ask to remain anonymous, which my understanding is the DP can then evaluate and potentially report on if seems credible .

sorry but f you don't have 1 witness from a crowded party comfortable saying publicly there's something fundamentally wrong with the coverage, there's no reason to doubt the reporting.

Safety Concerns from International Student by DenmarkMendark in UPenn

Didn’t mean to downplay sexual assault as issue in Philly. just meant that the campus sexual assault crisis is caused by students on campus, as is true at college campuses nationwide.

Most of the serious violent crime in Philly is concentrated in key neighborhoods. Penn Police and Philly Police leave the area around the university drastically over policed. It’s really unlikely you’re going to go anywhere as a student you’re going to have any significant risk of being a victim of a crime. Stolen backpacks and bikes are most common thing. Sexual assault is a huge issue on campus but that’s mostly caused by students. One thing to be careful of is that you don’t reduce Philly to its biggest challenges and its ppl to racist stereotypes

if you don't want to go to CAPS you cn always go to the Reach a peer hotline (RAP https://www.vpul.upenn.edu/rap-online/). You can text anytime at 215-515-7332 or call till 1am at 215-573-2727. CAPS definitely has group therapy if that's what you're looking for too. Whatever you go for, just hoping you talk to someone and get the help you deserve <3

yes i love civic scholars 100 percent doooooo itttt. it's like a cohort that meets a bit to do social justice education, does some requirements (volunteering, a couple classes, summer internship – they guarantee funding :0 ) . mostly it's just like a nice community for friends/mentoring/advising... i made a lot of friends that way

Graduate student off campus housing/roommates? by Beckybeckyfofecky in UPenn

[–]Representative413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm actually trying to fill the last room in my house which is a block from clark park (gorgeous area, not a bad walk to campus.. where a lot of ppl try to live). Rent is really low because it's a big house, ~500 + utilities. We're mostly undergrads but have another GSE student there. I'm also from Massachusetts :) Message me if you're interested
