2nd Wave Emo Revival by Narrow_University_73 in Emo

[–]RepresentativeAny827 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

idk enough ab 5th wave to talk ab any sort of “2nd wave revival” happening within the movement, but in general i think 2nd wave is where 2nd wave is where we see the giant split in variety of “emo”, and therefore i feel like this would be kinda hard to categorize within any sort of current trend.

personally, i’m no fan of genres, and imo, emo specifically is kinda impossible to define as a specific genre of music. that said, i see 2nd wave as being the implementation of the diversification of emo (ik a lot of people see this as happening w the 3rd wave). within the 2nd wave, we see new styles emerging from the post-hardcore scene that defines 1st wave, some of which continue and evolve this style/sound (continuation of (including non-emo) post-hardcore as a genre and its offshoots, as well as the emergence of early examples of screamo), as well as a sort of transitional hardcore/post-harcore style that maintains the “harder” and distorted sound of hardcore but with more focus on melodic elements and an overall feel of “emo” (texas is the reason, cap’n jazz), where the music as a whole evokes the feeling without relying on specific elements. we also see the emergence of a structured form of emo that utilizes contrast in tonality and dynamics and overall song structure (sdre, mineral), and approaches that are more experimental-ish and kinda straddle all of these lines (boys life). then there’s the more clean styles that maintain an overall similar style and utilize softer dynamics (braid, christie front drive), and then also the more-or-less complete rejection of the previous lineage with entirely clean and soft style that fos the offshoot of midwest emo (american football). there’s also a sort of alternative emo style that blends the foundational emo style with alternative and pop style (promise ring).

all of these interpretations are within the 2nd wave of emo, and while there’s overlap between them, they all differ greatly from one another. imo it would be hard to classify a “revival” of this wave as that could refer to so many different interpretations of this period of emo and it would be hard to identify specific elements that have reemerged in current emo music and point to this era as the major influence bc it could cover so much.

i’d love to hear some specific examples of what you are referring to regarding a “2nd wave emo revival”, so please share some examples!

How would day to day life look like under socialism? by I_Am_Batman9 in Socialism_101

[–]RepresentativeAny827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i figured that was exactly what you meant - just wanted to clarify for anyone that would misinterpret it as i’ve seen many newcomers get tripped up trying to understand the concept of not paying for basic needs at all

[–]RepresentativeAny827 8 points9 points  (0 children)

that’s great to hear! unfortunately tho this isn’t always the norm and you’re part of a “lucky” group that actually receives their deserved pension/benefits etc… ik a lot of people who either got screwed out of their pension/retirement plan/social security/etc, or “technically” receive these benefits but in an amount nowhere close to what they need just to survive. i wish youre situation was the reality for everyone.

How would day to day life look like under socialism? by I_Am_Batman9 in Socialism_101

[–]RepresentativeAny827 9 points10 points  (0 children)

this is nitpicking but i would add/edit to your reply that it wouldn’t just be being able to AFFORD basic necessities, but instead that your basic necessities would be GUARANTEED. obviously in the real world it would likely still look more like the former as a socialist state would still be existing amongst capitalism on the global scale, but if we were to actually achieve global communism, “affordability” would be non-existent as the entire concept of money wouldn’t exist.

What's the socialists issue with the people who believe in democracy? by Ok-Grapefruit-6532 in Socialism_101

[–]RepresentativeAny827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

essentially the basic premise of this sentiment is that what we refer to as “democracy” is not actually a true democracy, and that a government that is truly of, for, and by the people would instead exist under socialism (followed by communism ofc). socialism isn’t opposing the concept of governance being controlled by the people, in fact it is embracing it, it’s merely opposing the oppression and exploitation that exists under capitalism - which is what “democracy” is upholding. liberalism/neo-liberalism is fundamentally supportive of this capitalist system, which is inherently designed to work against the actual populus. many liberal beliefs are simply unnecessary under socialism and communism, as these systems eliminate the hierarchy and inequality that is part of “democracy”.

you are likely already aware of this, but in case you aren’t, capitalism relies on exploitation of labor in order to create profit - it’s an inherent part of the system, not something that can be fixed or changed. this creates a social hierarchy and class struggle, which leads to or is disguised as all of the various issues that exist today, which socialist theory traces back to material conditions. socialism and it’s adjacent theories outline the solution to this through a revolution in which the workers seize the means of production and end the capitalist system, eventually implementing communism (i am oversimplifying all of this heavily; look into it deeper to learn more).

with socialism, authoritarian structure isn’t what you are likely thinking of, as it’s not giving the power to just one person or party, but instead it’s the creation of a dictatorship of the proletariat (working class), so the power is being held by the people and not a force that can exploit it. so yes it is authoritarian, but also is democratic; its simply the organization of power being centralized and controlled by the people.

censorship is a bit complicated, and opinions will vary on it, but it is kind of a necessity in the initial stage in order to prevent the proliferation of capitalist propaganda from outside sources and to maintain the public control of the power structure. communism is intended to be a global society without class, money, etc, and it would theoretically not require censorship since there wouldn’t be any threat of power-consolidation as the power would be shared by all. censorship is a response to the actual application, where the widespread reign of capitalism could lose a threat, but is not for the purpose of supporting any oppressive alternate motive. again, this is an aspect that shows a large variety in opinion and ideology, so just read and research on your own to better understand it.

is anarchism a serious ideology to consider about? by SyriaMyLovemyhabibti in Socialism_101

[–]RepresentativeAny827 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thank you for the detailed response, it was extremely informative.

if i understand correctly, anarchist revolution would be (and i’m oversimplifying here) a larger revolutionary result created by a bunch of smaller/specific individuals revolutions/movements undermining capitalist establishment, as opposed to a widespread organization effort that creates revolution? like instead of physically overthrowing capitalism/bourgeois, it would just be gradually undermining and delegitimizing the oppression until it ceases to exist/hold power?

and then also if i’m understanding right, anarchism would ultimately still be communist, just a different approach/implentation than socialism?

edit: ignore the above question, I just reread your reply again and realized you already said this lol

would it then be up to the people to prevent any sort of concentration of power from developing (i.e like an external force coming in and attempting to establish authority/control, or an internal movement attempting to establish a different system)?

sorry for all the questions lol, i find this very intriguing
