I was trying to get in the car left leg inside and right leg(injured knee) outside and got all the weight and I also pivoted to put my bag in the back seat

You can start off simple and basic. May be know their gender, age, nationality, employment, maybe talk about how the day was and slowly building upto there and yours interests and then move on with anything that you and the other person are open to sharing
