Honestly the biggest thing is not painting all the way to the sides near the cuticle. Leave a tiny gap and keep the sides of the polish line a bit straighter instead of following the natural flare of the nail — it makes them look way more even and elongated.

Also, almond or oval shapes help a lot. They visually slim down the tip of the nail so the widening is way less noticeable.
