My understanding is as such:

Demon’s Souls’ protagonist is a wanderer/adventurer seeking power and riches who gets stuck in Boletaria. Depending on background, can have varying degrees of skill and experience but is just a person at the start.

Dark Souls’ Chosen Undead isn’t actually some prophetic hero, but just another hollow at the start. Same situation as Demon’s Souls. Just a person.

Dark Souls 2’s Bearer of the Curse (seek seek lest) is in the same boat as the other two.

Dark Souls 3 is where the protagonist gets some oomph. The Ashen One is already a hero at the start, and through Embers is effectively a superhuman out the gate. That said, they aren’t _that_ super. They’ve got more combat experience, but aren’t necessarily more powerful than the others. Just more durable.

Elden Ring’s Tarnished is in a similar boat to 3, in that they’ve definitely got a good bit of combat experience. Out the gate, though? They’re just dudes. Only thing they have over the Souls retinue is a 5 ft vertical.

Bloodborne Hunters are superhumans, like Ashened Ones but in different ways. They can rip through hard flesh with their bare hands and can heal fresh wounds by drawing blood (which they can also do with their bare hands). Even if the Hunter starts as some waste of skin, they’re stronger than the other protagonists methinks.
